Chapter 639
I was stunned. Lena, ever the doctor, wasnโt about to rely on guesswork or theories. She grabbed my hand, her expression soft but resolute. โRea, you need to move on. Hayden was incredible, but heโs gone. Holding on like this isnโt good for youโor for him.โ
Her eyes dropped to the ring on my finger. โYou and Jace used to go to monastery services, right? Youโve heard the sayingโwhen someone whoโs passed is held onto too tightly, they canโt find peace or move on.โ
At the end of science lies superstition. I didnโt dismiss her words outright; my mom used to tell me the same thing when I was little.
โRea, let him go. Live your lifeโreally live it. Thatโs the best way to honor him.โ
It wasnโt about not being able to let Hayden goโit was the unanswered questions surrounding his death that refused to leave me alone. For the first time, I felt like Lena didnโt get it. I couldnโt blame her, though. Anyone else in her position wouldโve thought the same thingโthat I was just stuck on Hayden.
โFine. Iโll let go,โ I said with a faint smile, steering the conversation away. โYou crushed it as todayโs director. Let me treat you to dinner.โ
โWell, youโre the rich one now,โ Lena said with a playful grin. โYouโve got so much money, the interest alone is ridiculous. I want top-tier everything.โ
She wasnโt wrong, and I wasnโt about to hold back. If I wasnโt spending it, who was I saving it for?
I took her to the highest observation restaurant in Seavora, where we ate like queens. Afterward, I brought her to the best bar in town.
โAlright, whatโs with you today?โ Lena asked, narrowing her eyes.
โNothingโs up. Youโre the one who said I couldnโt move on. Well, here I amโmoving on. Why are you so surprised?โ I teased.
Not only had I dragged Lena to a bar, but Iโd also arranged for a group of guys to join us.
โYouโve officially lost it,โ Lena hissed.
โExactly. Letโs lose it for one night.โ I leaned closer, lowering my voice. โYouโre not married. If you donโt go wild now, when will you?โ
โYouโre just using this as an excuse to stir up trouble,โ Lena shot back, reading me like an open book.
I laughed mischievously and waved the young men over to join us. Soon, we were drinking and chatting about everythingโlife, philosophy, and the kind of nonsense that only makes sense after a few rounds.
โShould we each take one home?โ I asked boldly.
Lena pinched me. โStop being ridiculous. I know what youโre trying to do, but donโt take it too far,โ she warned.
โYou call it obsession, but I donโt think it is. I just need to test my theory one last timeโmy way.โ
Lena sighed heavily. โI hope your instincts are right.โ
She went along with it anyway, and when we left the bar, each of us brought one of the guys to a hotel. Naturally, Lena and I stayed in one room while the two guys were parked in another.
Lying on the plush hotel bed, staring at the ceiling, Lena broke the silence. โWeโve been here for over an hour now. If Hayden is alive and saw another man, donโt you think he wouldโve stopped you by now?โ
She wasnโt wrong. If heโd caught wind of this, he wouldnโt let me spiral like this. Even if he didnโt show up himself, heโd have sent Kylianโor someoneโto shut it down.
But there was nothing.
โMaybe he didnโt see it. Should I call a paparazzi and make sure it hits the headlines?โ I joked, only for Lena to kick me lightly.
โEnough. Go wash up and get some sleep. When you wake up tomorrow, leave the past where it belongs and focus on whatโs ahead,โ she said.
She got up to shower, leaving me alone with my thoughts, staring blankly at the ceiling. The sudden ring of my phone shattered the silence. Wayneโs name flashed on the screen.
Had word of my hotel stunt already reached him? I answered, but before I could say anything, his urgent voice cut in. โRea, thereโs been a major accident at the amusement park. You need to come right away.โ
