Chapter 706

That was a good question. Honestly, I wanted to hear him say it, too. Even though I knew he was Hayden, even though I was sure down to my core, I still longed for him to admit it out loud. Just one word from him would change everything.

Xander glanced at me, his eyes locking onto mine for a beat before he replied to Cole. โ€œIโ€™m just myself. You should already have all the answers about my identity, shouldnโ€™t you?โ€

Cole chuckled, twice. โ€œWell, good luck with that.โ€

Then the line went dead.

Xander went right back to his breakfast like nothing had happened. Meanwhile, I could barely touch mine.

โ€œWhy arenโ€™t you eating? Itโ€™s going to get cold,โ€ he said casually, like the phone call hadnโ€™t just thrown a massive warning in his face.

โ€œCole was warning you,โ€ I said, my chest tightening. โ€œHeโ€™s trying to tell you youโ€™re in trouble.โ€

Xander didnโ€™t even blink. โ€œI know.โ€

โ€œAnd youโ€™re not scared?โ€ I asked, anxiety creeping up my spine in his place.

He picked up a napkin, folding it neatly. โ€œWhat good would fear do?โ€

That calm composureโ€”it wasnโ€™t something a nightclub model should have.

I took a deep breath, my resolve hardening. I had to protect him. I wouldnโ€™t let anyone hurt him again.

โ€œXander,โ€ I said, my voice steady, repeating Coleโ€™s question, โ€œI want to ask you the same thing. Are you Hayden?โ€

His hands froze mid-fold, and his eyes flicked back to mine. โ€œWhat do you think?โ€

Still no direct answer.

I smiled faintly. โ€œYou are.โ€

Xander smiled back but didnโ€™t say a word, his attention returning to the napkin he was folding between his hands.

I studied his face carefully. โ€œBut I still have questions.โ€

โ€œLike what?โ€ he asked, not bothering to look up. Whatever he found so fascinating about a piece of napkin was beyond me.

โ€œFor one,โ€ I said, watching him fiddle with the napkin, โ€œa lot about you has changed. For example, the mole on the back of your neckโ€”where did it go?โ€

โ€œBesides the mole, what else?โ€ he deflected.

I didnโ€™t rush him, keeping my voice calm. โ€œYour skinโ€™s different now, too. Itโ€™s clearer, lighter.โ€

He finally looked up, giving me a pointed glance. โ€œWhat, you didnโ€™t like how it was before?โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s not it,โ€ I said, my tone softening. โ€œI loved Haydenโ€”everything about him. So, of course, I liked how he was before.โ€ I paused, letting out a small laugh. โ€œBut apart from your face, there are so many differences. For instance, your voiceโ€ฆโ€

I tilted my head, teasing. โ€œItโ€™s soft. Too soft. I donโ€™t like itโ€”it doesnโ€™t suit you.โ€

He didnโ€™t react to my comment, his focus still on the napkin in his hands. Only then did I notice that it was no longer just a napkin. It had been folded into a small white rabbit.

He placed the rabbit in his palm and held it out to me. โ€œFor you. Do you like it?โ€

I took it, turning it over in my hands. A napkin turned into a rabbitโ€”his skill with napkin folding was oddly impressive. โ€œDid you make these all the time for Yuna?โ€

He ignored the question completely.

I shook the little bell charm on my bracelet in front of him. โ€œThis was a gift from Hayden. I love it. On countless nights when I missed him, Iโ€™d sit and ring this bell.โ€

Xanderโ€™s eyes flicked to the bracelet. โ€œItโ€™s beautiful.โ€

โ€œThen can you give me a word?โ€ I asked. I wanted to punish him for lying to me, sure, but pretending I didnโ€™t know he was Hayden was wearing me down. Still, when I thought about the danger surrounding him, fear and regret crept in. I didnโ€™t want to waste a single moment of the time we had together.

He reached out, and for a moment, I thought he was going to embrace me. Instead, he took my left hand in his, gently running his fingers over the rings I wore. โ€œDonโ€™t you think wearing two rings at once is a bit extravagant?โ€

His words sent my heart racing.
