Chapter 707

Just when I thought he was going to take one of the rings offโ€”maybe to give it back to me as some kind of answerโ€”he surprised me.

โ€œBut they look good on you. Unique, too,โ€ he said, letting go of my hand.

I blinked, stunned by his reaction, before a small laugh slipped out. He still wouldnโ€™t admit it.

I understood why he might hide his identity. It was probably for his safety, a way to protect himself. But why couldnโ€™t he be honest with me? Did he not trust me? Or was he trying to protect me, too?

It didnโ€™t really matter. As long as I knew who he was, that was enough.

โ€œIf youโ€™re free today, come with me to see someone,โ€ I said, recalling my promise to Yuna. โ€œYou know, I need you to pretend to be Hayden.โ€

He didnโ€™t hesitate. โ€œAlright,โ€ he agreed easily. Then he gestured toward my untouched breakfast. โ€œHurry up and eat.โ€

I smiled faintly, digging in. Heโ€™d gone out of his way to make this, and it was exactly how I liked it. Skipping it wasnโ€™t an optionโ€”especially since Iโ€™d barely eaten last night. Drinks didnโ€™t count.

While I ate, Xander stepped out onto the terrace. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw him standing there, his back to me. He was probably smoking.

For all his calm earlier, there was no way he wasnโ€™t rattled by that phone call. He just hid it well.

Watching him made my chest ache, but I busied myself cleaning up after dinner anyway. As I carried the plates into the kitchen, he came back inside.

โ€œYou donโ€™t have to clean up. Go freshen up,โ€ Xander said, stepping closer.

The faint mix of smoke and his scent hit meโ€”a combination I hadnโ€™t smelled in ages. It was familiar, yet unsettling, flashing memories of him smoking and hiding his true self from me.

Before I could stop myself, I hugged him, burying my face in the curve of his neck. He froze but didnโ€™t pull away. โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong?โ€ he asked softly.

Clinging to his shirt, I murmured, โ€œYou smell good. Really good.โ€

He stayed quiet, letting me hold him, until he finally broke the silence. โ€œYour friend was referred to them by someone.โ€

I pulled back slightly, catching his meaningโ€”Demi. Standing so close, I couldnโ€™t miss the faint mark on his Adamโ€™s apple. My bite. Perfectly placed, almost distracting.

I swallowed, forcing myself to focus. โ€œShe wasnโ€™t coerced?โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ he said firmly.

I thought of Demiโ€™s words the last time I saw her. โ€œShe wouldnโ€™t do that willingly,โ€ I whispered.

โ€œShe mustโ€™ve had her reasonsโ€”or something she couldnโ€™t say.โ€ My gaze met his. โ€œI want to see her. Can you help me?โ€

I needed someone like him to get into DracoLux.

He paused. โ€œYou seem especially interested in DracoLuxโ€™s business.โ€

โ€œBecause I suspect the man I loveโ€”Haydenโ€”was hurt by Wayne, and Wayne and DracoLux are connected.โ€

His expression shifted. โ€œDonโ€™t you already think Iโ€™m him?โ€

I didnโ€™t let him off the hook. โ€œYou wonโ€™t admit it. And honestlyโ€ฆโ€ I tilted my head, mocking. โ€œYouโ€™re too different. Wrong voice, wrong skin, even his mole is gone.โ€

Stepping back, I smoothed the wrinkles on his shirt. โ€œYouโ€™re not him.โ€

I turned and left the kitchen, his voice trailing behind me. โ€œSheโ€™ll be on tonight.โ€

He meant Demi, of course.
