Chapter 709
The promise of more gifts had the kids scattering like a flock of birds, rushing toward him with outstretched hands. Their boldness made it clearโWade was no stranger here.
I sat up, smoothing my hair, still messy from the kidsโ ambush, and wiped away their kisses. Wade approached, handing me a tissue. โThese kids can be a handful.โ
My face, damp. โThey are, but theyโre adorable,โ I said with a smile. โBeing around them makes you feel young again.โ
My gaze drifted to where Xander and Yuna stood a little ways off, deep in conversation.
โSometimes they drive you crazy,โ Wade said lightly. โTheyโve brought Yuna to tears more than once.โ
I turned to him, catching the shift in his tone. His eyes flickered with guilt before he quickly looked away. I knew what he was trying to avoid, but I couldnโt help but ask, โHave you figured out how you feel about Yuna yet?โ
โYuna isnโt Narelle,โ he said firmly, dodging the question. I got the message. He wanted it clearโhe didnโt conflate Yuna with Narelle, even if Yuna carried her heart.
Since he set the boundary, I didnโt push. Instead, I asked, โArenโt you curious why Narelle and I look alike?โ
His eyes darted to my face, then quickly away. โWhat, are you her relative or something?โ
I chuckled. โYou guessed it.โ
I explained my connection to Narelle, and Wade looked genuinely shocked. After a moment, he sighed. โIf Narelle were here, sheโd be so happy. She always said she felt lonely, like she didnโt have a sibling.โ
If she were alive, we could have been like sisters. But life doesnโt let you have what you want without a fight.
When we finished talking about Narelle, I brought up sending Yuna to Kehlmark Royal Academy. Wadeโs sudden silence was jarring.
โWhy arenโt you saying anything?โ I asked. โDo you not want her to go? Are you worried she wonโt adjust? Or is it something else?โ
โItโs not that,โ he said, then paused. โHave you ever noticed how strange the connections between people can be?โ
I could see Wade was leading to something. โAlright,โ I said, โWhatโs so strange about it?โ
โYuna has Narelleโs heart,โ he began, โand because of that, a lot of her habits, even her interests, are just like Narelleโs. I asked her about it once, and she admitted that after the transplant, she started liking things she used to hate.โ
He wasnโt wrongโYuna had told me something similar before. Meeting his gaze, I asked, โAre you saying Narelle is still here? That sheโs living on through Yuna?โ
Wade exhaled deeply. โI donโt know. I donโt want to think that way, but sometimes, the way Yuna actsโฆ itโs hard not to wonder.โ
He trailed off, but I knew where his thoughts were headed.
โDoes that bother you?โ I asked.
He gave a small nod. โI want to separate them.โ
That was the core of his struggleโhe didnโt want Yuna to be a replacement for Narelle, but her similarities made it impossible to ignore.
โWhy try to separate them?โ I said softly. โWhy not just accept them as one person? Wouldnโt that make it easier for you?โ
โIโve thought about it,โ Wade admitted, his voice heavy. โBut itโs not easy.โ
โIf you donโt want to keep torturing yourself, thereโs another option,โ I said, keeping my tone steady. โYou could distance yourself from Yuna entirely. Let go of Narelle completely. Treat it as though sheโs truly gone.โ
The suggestion was brutal but honest. They say someone only truly dies when the people who love them start to forget. But Wade was trappedโhe couldnโt separate his feelings for Yuna from the heart she carried. If he did, heโd keep suffering, and Yuna would sink deeper into a mess she might never escape.
Sometimes, the only way out is to make the hardest choice.
