Chapter 711
Xander kept that stone-cold poker face, and honestly? I was covering it. I grabbed my phone and started scrolling, pretending not to care.
โYou really pull guys in, huh?โ he said out of nowhere.
I glanced up, raising a brow. โObviously. Iโm a total catch. Everyoneโs obsessed with me.โ
I smirked. โWhatโs the problem? Is Wade getting too much of my attention for your liking?โ
He sipped his water, cool as ever. โNo.โ
Yeah, okay. Sure, Jan.
I was ready to roll my eyes and move on when he hit me with, โYou only love Hayden.โ
Yikes. Cue the most awkward silence ever.
I almost laughed. Like, really? The guy was walking around all smug, thinking I was still hooked on him?
Spoiler: not completely wrong. I mean, I still had the ring he gave me and this bracelet with the dumb little bell charm. The bell jingled softly when I flicked it, breaking the tension. โYeah, youโre rightโI do love him,โ I said, voice light. โBut letโs be real, how sustainable is that? Loving someone you canโt even touch? Kinda tragic, donโt you think?โ
I shot him a sly smile. โMaybe one day, Iโll meet someone else. The worldโs full of distractions, right?โ
His eyes darkened. โSo your love isnโt steadfast?โ
โExactly,โ I said with a shrug. โIf someone wants a shot, they better make it while Iโm still interested. Once Iโm over it? Game over.โ
I said it casually, but an image of Jace coughing up blood crashed into my brain. Yeah. He was Exhibit A of that rule.
Xander stayed quiet, and I wasnโt about to poke the bear.
The tension fizzled as soon as Yuna and Wade came back. Yuna was all sunshine and sparkles, practically skipping into the room, while Wade looked like he was deep in his own world.
With Yuna around, the vibe flipped fast. At one point, she started teasing me about marriage.
โHayden, itโs been ages since you proposed to Keira! When are you finally sealing the deal?โ she said, grinning.
โVery soon,โ Xander said, so chill youโd think heโd already booked the venue.
โVery soonโ isnโt a real deadline! Iโm losing patience here,โ Yuna huffed before turning her playful energy toward me. โRight, Keira? Youโre dying to lock him down too, arenโt you?โ
I rolled with it, nodding like I was in on the joke. โOh, I can wait. But if I do lose patience, and heโs still dragging his feet? Guess Iโll have to find someone else.โ
Yuna gasped dramatically. โHayden, did you hear that? Sheโs calling you out!โ
โI heard her,โ Xander said, his eyes locking with mine. โBut itโs not happening. I wonโt give her the chance.โ
And that was my cue to dip. I stood, muttering something about needing the bathroom, but instead made a beeline for the balcony.
At first, Xanderโs whole two-faced actโHayden for Yuna, Xander when it was just usโfelt like a fun little game. But now? It was seriously grinding my nerves.
I leaned on the railing, letting the cool air calm me down. Below, koi swirled lazily in the fountain.
Then I heard footsteps. Wade.
โSomething bothering you?โ he asked.
I didnโt look at him, just kept my eyes on the fish. โDoesnโt everyone have something weighing on them?โ I mumbled. โEven those fish probably have their own little problems.โ
โLike what? Planning a jailbreak?โ Wade joked, and I couldnโt help itโa small smile slipped out.
โMaybe,โ I said, voice soft. โHuman worries, fish worriesโฆ itโs all just stuff hiding under the surface, isnโt it?โ
For a moment, it was just the sound of the fountain between us. Then Wade broke the silence.
โIโve made up my mind. After dinner tonight,โ he said with a heavy exhale, โIโm going to leave Yuna.โ
The words hit me like a splash of cold water. I turned to him, searching his face. โWait, what? Are you sure? Donโt do something impulsive.โ
โItโs not impulsive,โ Wade said, shoulders sagging. โEvery time Iโm with her, I ask myselfโฆ am I in love with her? Or am I drawn to the heart she carries?โ
His voice cracked slightly. โItโs killing me. I canโt keep pretendingโโ
A loud thud cut him off, making us both spin around. Yuna was standing a few steps away, pale as a ghost.
