Chapter 21
Tears were still running down Demiโs cheeks when she suddenly requested, โHoses, the starving Grab me risotto.โ
โOn it,โ I said quickly. โWant some meat, too?โ
She used to be all about meatโthen complain about dieting right after.
โMeat helps you heal, right? Why not?โ she replied with a playful grin. The old Demi was still in there somewhere.
Her smile hit me harder than her tears. How could she act so normal when I knew she wasnโt okay? I forced a grin. โAlright. Pork belly sound good?โ
โMake sure itโs marbled, not all lean or fat,โ she quipped, her usual picky self.
โGot it. Only the best for you,โ I promised, standing up.
But instead of leaving, I hovered outside her door, leaning against the frame. A moment later, the sound of her quiet sobs slipped through.
I pressed my back to the wall, eyes shut, my chest tightening like I couldnโt breathe. After a second to pull myself together, I headed out to grab her food. Thatโs when I ran into Jace.
The second I saw him, my mind flashed to the image of him coughing up bloodโcrimson dripping down his chin. It was so vivid, I couldnโt shake it.
He spotted me too, but neither of us said anything. He walked right past me, close enough for our shoulders to brush. No glance, no acknowledgment. Like I wasnโt even there.
After ten years, four of them as a couple, thatโs all weโd becomeโnothing. And yet, maybe thatโs what we were now. Just two people, no strings attached.
โOne order of pea risotto, slow-roasted pork belly, and a salad,โ I told the cashier, rattling off Demiโs favorites.
Even though I knew she couldnโt eat much, I got her extraโjust in case. A dessert, too, because she deserved something sweet.
With the bag in hand, I left the restaurant. But there he was againโJace, leaning against a car. He ignored me earlier, but now he was clearly waiting. I didnโt say anything, just stared. โWhat are you doing here? Not feeling well?โ he finally asked.
It was a hospital cafeteria, so fair question.
I couldnโt bring up Demi, and Hayden was off-limits, so I lied, โIโm here for Lena.โ
He glanced at the takeout bag. โYouโre still lying to me, huh?โ
I hesitated, then shrugged. โFine. Itโs for Xander. Heโs hurt.โ
Wayne knew, Cole had seen himโJace was bound to find out sooner or later.
Jaceโs face shifted, but barely. The last time heโd heard Xanderโs voiceโor Haydenโs, reallyโhe ended up coughing blood. I bet part of him thought heโd have a chance now that Hayden was โgone.โ
But Xander being back? It messed with that fantasy. Not that it mattered. Jace and I were long over. No way was I going back.
โOh,โ he said casually. โIs it serious?โ
There wasnโt any real concern in his voiceโjust curiosity, maybe.
โNot really,โ I said flatly.
Jaceโs eyes flicked to the food. โDoesnโt seem like heโs in too much trouble if youโre buying enough for a whole party.โ
I didnโt answer, and neither did he. The silence stretched between us, awkward and heavy. Thatโs when I noticed how bad he lookedโthinner, tired. The weight loss didnโt suit him; it just made him lookโฆoff.
โGoodbye,โ he finally said, turning to leave.
โGoodbye,โ I whispered back, barely loud enough for myself to hear.
I carried the food back to Demiโs room, but the moment I stepped out of the elevator, two guys in black suits were waiting. They looked at me, then the bag.
