Chapter 21

Tears were still running down Demiโ€™s cheeks when she suddenly requested, โ€œHoses, the starving Grab me risotto.โ€

โ€œOn it,โ€ I said quickly. โ€œWant some meat, too?โ€

She used to be all about meatโ€”then complain about dieting right after.

โ€œMeat helps you heal, right? Why not?โ€ she replied with a playful grin. The old Demi was still in there somewhere.

Her smile hit me harder than her tears. How could she act so normal when I knew she wasnโ€™t okay? I forced a grin. โ€œAlright. Pork belly sound good?โ€

โ€œMake sure itโ€™s marbled, not all lean or fat,โ€ she quipped, her usual picky self.

โ€œGot it. Only the best for you,โ€ I promised, standing up.

But instead of leaving, I hovered outside her door, leaning against the frame. A moment later, the sound of her quiet sobs slipped through.

I pressed my back to the wall, eyes shut, my chest tightening like I couldnโ€™t breathe. After a second to pull myself together, I headed out to grab her food. Thatโ€™s when I ran into Jace.

The second I saw him, my mind flashed to the image of him coughing up bloodโ€”crimson dripping down his chin. It was so vivid, I couldnโ€™t shake it.

He spotted me too, but neither of us said anything. He walked right past me, close enough for our shoulders to brush. No glance, no acknowledgment. Like I wasnโ€™t even there.

After ten years, four of them as a couple, thatโ€™s all weโ€™d becomeโ€”nothing. And yet, maybe thatโ€™s what we were now. Just two people, no strings attached.

โ€œOne order of pea risotto, slow-roasted pork belly, and a salad,โ€ I told the cashier, rattling off Demiโ€™s favorites.

Even though I knew she couldnโ€™t eat much, I got her extraโ€”just in case. A dessert, too, because she deserved something sweet.

With the bag in hand, I left the restaurant. But there he was againโ€”Jace, leaning against a car. He ignored me earlier, but now he was clearly waiting. I didnโ€™t say anything, just stared. โ€œWhat are you doing here? Not feeling well?โ€ he finally asked.

It was a hospital cafeteria, so fair question.

I couldnโ€™t bring up Demi, and Hayden was off-limits, so I lied, โ€œIโ€™m here for Lena.โ€

He glanced at the takeout bag. โ€œYouโ€™re still lying to me, huh?โ€

I hesitated, then shrugged. โ€œFine. Itโ€™s for Xander. Heโ€™s hurt.โ€

Wayne knew, Cole had seen himโ€”Jace was bound to find out sooner or later.

Jaceโ€™s face shifted, but barely. The last time heโ€™d heard Xanderโ€™s voiceโ€”or Haydenโ€™s, reallyโ€”he ended up coughing blood. I bet part of him thought heโ€™d have a chance now that Hayden was โ€˜gone.โ€™

But Xander being back? It messed with that fantasy. Not that it mattered. Jace and I were long over. No way was I going back.

โ€œOh,โ€ he said casually. โ€œIs it serious?โ€

There wasnโ€™t any real concern in his voiceโ€”just curiosity, maybe.

โ€œNot really,โ€ I said flatly.

Jaceโ€™s eyes flicked to the food. โ€œDoesnโ€™t seem like heโ€™s in too much trouble if youโ€™re buying enough for a whole party.โ€

I didnโ€™t answer, and neither did he. The silence stretched between us, awkward and heavy. Thatโ€™s when I noticed how bad he lookedโ€”thinner, tired. The weight loss didnโ€™t suit him; it just made him lookโ€ฆoff.

โ€œGoodbye,โ€ he finally said, turning to leave.

โ€œGoodbye,โ€ I whispered back, barely loud enough for myself to hear.

I carried the food back to Demiโ€™s room, but the moment I stepped out of the elevator, two guys in black suits were waiting. They looked at me, then the bag.
