Chapter 720
This whole situation involved way too many people. Demi was already hanging by a thread, yet she still wanted to be the shield, the one who took the hits. I couldnโt stand the thought of her going through it again.
If we could find other victimsโanyone willing to step forward or share evidenceโmaybe, just maybe, we could end DracoLux for good.
โSome of the girls, I can still find,โ Lena said, her tone serious. โBut not all. And even if I do track them down, you need to understand they didnโt report it back then for a reason. Thereโs no guarantee theyโll help now.โ
She wasnโt wrong. This wasnโt just hardโit was near impossible.
โItโs okay,โ I said quietly. โWeโll try. If theyโre willing, great. If notโฆ at least we tried.โ
My brief spark of hope gave way to a deeper sadness. The thought of how many girls had suffered like Demi made my stomach churn.
โIโll start looking into my records,โ Lena promised, determination etched across her face. She didnโt care about rules or red tape. If breaking them meant taking down DracoLux, sheโd do it without hesitation.
โJustโฆ be careful,โ I said, my voice soft but firm. The idea of Lena being dragged into this nightmare scared me. If word got back to Cole or his people, sheโd be in danger, too. If it werenโt absolutely necessary, I wouldnโt want her to get involved at all.
โI will,โ Lena replied, calm and steady.
I couldnโt help myself. I hugged her.
โGet off me,โ she muttered, shoving me back. โIโm covered in blood.โ
โI donโt care,โ I said, holding tighter.
Her tough act cracked for just a second as she let out a small laugh. That little moment of warmth? It gave me something to cling to.
When I returned to Demiโs room, she looked like she was asleep, but I knew better. Lena had told me the anesthesia had worn off hours ago; Demi was in pain. I sat beside her, taking her hand in mine. Slowly, her eyes opened.
โIf it hurts, just cry,โ I said gently. I couldnโt take her pain away, but I wanted her to know she didnโt have to carry it alone.
โIt doesnโt hurt,โ Demi whispered.
Those words hurt me. I knew she wasnโt just talking about the physical pain. Whatever she was feeling inside was so much worse, so deep that it made everything else seem insignificant.
โKeira,โ she murmured with a faint smile tugged at her swollen lips, โthereโs a lot I didnโt tell you last time. Want the full story now?โ
I hesitated. Talking couldnโt be easy for her. โWe can talk later. Thereโs no rush.โ
โTalking distracts me,โ she admitted.
Iโd never heard of talking as a way to ease pain before, but if that was what she needed, I wasnโt going to argue. I nodded. โIโm listening.โ
Demi closed her eyes for a moment, collecting herself, then began.
โLast time, I told you I borrowed moneyโonline loans, payday loans. But it wasnโt just thatโฆโ Her voice cracked, but she pushed on. โI also got caught in this thingโletโs call it a collateral loan. โYou strip, they take pictures, and you get the money. If you canโt pay it back, theyโll force you into the sex trade.โโ
I froze. โYou mean they forced you?โ
โYes.โ Her broken smile made my chest ache. โThe first time is the most valuable.โ
My mind was spinning. Sheโd been with Jorian back thenโhadnโt she?
As if reading my thoughts, she added, โI finally figured out why that bastard always stopped short with me.โ
Her bitter laugh felt like a slap. โHe planned to sell me all along. Thatโs why he never โwent all the way.โ He wanted to keep me โuntouched.โโ
Her voice cracked again, and she squeezed her eyes shut. A single tear slipped down her cheek. She was crying. Not from the abuse. Not from the injuries. It wasnโt DracoLux that broke her. It was him. Jorian Kay. She must have loved him once. Itโs the only way anyone could be hurt this deeply.
