Chapter 743

โ€œOne Sloppy Joe Taco, extra hot sauce,โ€ Lena said, stepping up to the counter. She didnโ€™t bother asking Aaron what he wanted; she assumed he wouldnโ€™t eat tacos anyway. But, of course, Aaron had to surprise her.

โ€œOne Ground Beef Taco.โ€

Lena turned to him. โ€œYouโ€™re eating?โ€

Aaron looked unbothered. โ€œWhat else? You eat, and I just sit here watching?โ€

The eatery owner, catching the vibe, laughed and chimed in, โ€œWe get couples sharing one large taco all the time!โ€

Lenaโ€™s face burned. Couples? Lady, please. Another misunderstanding. By now, Lena could practically write a memoir about them.

Back in school, when Aaron was still around, people constantly assumed they were a couple. One clueless teacher even accused them of dating and threatened to call their parents. Iconic. Now, as full-grown adults, it was borderline laughable that they still couldnโ€™t dodge the same assumptions.

Lena cast a quick glance at Aaron. Honestly, he barely looked older than herโ€”annoyingly flawless.

โ€œMy uncle prefers mild flavors, so no hot sauce,โ€ Lena said, putting extra weight on โ€˜my uncle.โ€™

The owner blinked, then gave a laugh. โ€œHeโ€™s not a blood relative, is he?โ€

Well, no, he wasnโ€™t. Aaron had been adopted and raised by her grandparents, practically like family. But this wasnโ€™t exactly a fun topic for Lena, so she shut it down quickly. โ€œHe is.โ€

Aaron, as usual, didnโ€™t even react. He just found a seat and sat.

Lena exhaled and followed him. โ€œDo you want something to drink?โ€

โ€œI already ordered a bubble tea from next door. Itโ€™ll be here soon,โ€ Aaron said, totally casual.

Lena froze for half a second. Wait, what? Since when did Aaron, of all people, drink bubble tea? She hadnโ€™t even seen him order it. The more she thought about it, the weirder it got. Aaron used to ban her from touching bubble tea or soda. He wouldnโ€™t even go near casual snacks himself.

Conclusion? Love. Aaron must have a girlfriend. No way heโ€™d suddenly go soft without one.

โ€œUncle Aaron, when are you bringing your girlfriend home?โ€ Lena broke the silence.

Aaron looked at her. โ€œWhat girlfriend? I didnโ€™t even know I had one.โ€

Lena froze. He let the moment hang for a beat before adding, โ€œI donโ€™t have a girlfriend.โ€

Her lips moved, but no sound came out for a second. โ€œAre youโ€ฆ hiding her from the familโ€”โ€œ Oh no. She cringed. Sheโ€™d already spilled this nonsense to her mom.

Aaron asked, โ€œYou think I went to your department with a girlfriend last time, donโ€™t you?โ€

Lena nodded. โ€œYeah. Why else would a grown man randomly show up at the OB-GYN department?โ€

โ€œA pregnant client fell during an event. I just helped her get to the hospital,โ€ Aaron said.

Cue the wave of awkwardness crashing over Lena. Thatโ€™s what happened? Great. Sheโ€™d played herself.

โ€˜Lena Lane, nice job jumping to conclusions,โ€™ she thought, cringing internally.

โ€œYou came to see me today just to scold me, huh? My bad for misunderstanding,โ€ she said, swallowing her pride.

โ€œIโ€™m not trying to scold you. I just wanted to clarify the situation,โ€ Aaron replied.

Lena stuck out her tongue at him, trying to brush it off, but the awkwardness was suffocating. Being around him already made her self-consciousโ€”this misunderstanding just cranked it up a notch.

โ€œExcuse me,โ€ a shy voice interrupted.

Lena turned to see a girl nervously approaching, her cheeks already pink. She was fidgeting, eyes locked on Aaron.

โ€œHi, I was wondering if I couldโ€”โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ Aaron cut in, flat and final.

Her face went from pink to crimson as Aaronโ€”completely unfazedโ€”turned to Lena instead.

โ€œI have a girlfriend,โ€ he said, cool as ice.
