Chapter 775

Tanya didnโ€™t give up. She pulled out an envelope stuffed with cashโ€”Yunaโ€™s earningsโ€”and pushed it toward her alongside the box. โ€œIf you donโ€™t take this, you wonโ€™t get anything at all.โ€ She really knew how to corner someone.

Thatโ€™s when I decided to step in. I pushed the door open and strolled in, as if I had no idea what was going on. โ€œWell, well, Tanya. Entertaining guests, are we?โ€

Yuna didnโ€™t even blink at my sudden arrival. No acknowledgment, no reactionโ€”she acted like we were total strangers. Tanya, though, stiffened for half a second before slipping her mask back on. She turned to Yuna and smiled. โ€œThis is all yours. Take it.โ€

Without hesitation, Yuna grabbed the envelope but left the box behind, making her stance clear. As expected of a girl raised by Haydenโ€”she had her pride.

โ€œThank you,โ€ Yuna said before turning to leave.

From start to finish, Yuna didnโ€™t say a single word to me. I couldnโ€™t tell if she was still mad at me or just didnโ€™t want Tanya knowing we were connected.

โ€œIf you ever want another side job, youโ€™re welcome back anytime,โ€ Tanya called after her, still fishing, even with me standing there.

โ€œGood thing youโ€™re a woman,โ€ I said casually, watching Yuna leave. โ€œIf you were a man, Iโ€™d think you had a thing for her.โ€ I strolled over to Tanyaโ€™s desk and picked up the box sheโ€™d packed for Yuna.

โ€œDonโ€™t you think thatโ€™s rude?โ€ Tanya shot back, her tone as sharp as ever. Not a shred of respect for me as her boss.

I popped the box open. Inside was a diamond-encrusted braceletโ€”expensive enough to turn heads. โ€œWow. Youโ€™re pulling out all the stops just to keep her on your leash.โ€

โ€œNo pain, no gain,โ€ Tanya replied, not even bothering to hide her intentions.

I snapped the lid shut. โ€œWhatever plans youโ€™ve got for that girl, let them go. Now.โ€

She didnโ€™t flinch, just stared at me, waiting for an explanation. I wasnโ€™t about to play coy. โ€œSheโ€™s Haydenโ€™s sister.โ€

Tanya froze for a moment. โ€œIs that so?โ€

She smirked. โ€œHaydenโ€™s sister, huh? Singing for tips in a bar? Forget Haydenโ€”just you, as her sister-in-law, donโ€™t seem very impressive.โ€

She was digging for more, but I wasnโ€™t giving her anything. Sliding the box back across the desk, I leaned in slightly. โ€œYouโ€™ve got a big bar to run. Plenty to keep you busy, donโ€™t you think?โ€

It was a warning.

Tanya asked, โ€œSo, whatโ€™s the deal tonight? Surprise inspection or just killing time?โ€

โ€œBoth,โ€ I said, making it clear I wasnโ€™t some hands-off boss.

She didnโ€™t flinch, didnโ€™t look the least bit guilty. In fact, she smirked and said, โ€œNeed me to provide anything?โ€

I wasnโ€™t about to spook her. She was still useful to me, after all. Instead, I gave her a little ego boost. โ€œIโ€™m thinking youโ€™ve earned yourself a big bonus at the end of the year.โ€

Tanyaโ€™s smirk widened. โ€œIโ€™ll be waiting for it.โ€

Her smugness was almost funny, so I added, โ€œYouโ€™ve got a real knack for management, Tanya. If you worked somewhere like Riverwave Corp, youโ€™d probably be mid-to-upper management by now.โ€

She had the skills to rise on merit, but sheโ€™d always chosen shortcuts.

โ€œTrying to provoke me?โ€ she asked, sharp as ever.

โ€œJust saying itโ€™s a shame,โ€ I replied, shrugging.

Tanyaโ€™s smile didnโ€™t waver. โ€œEveryoneโ€™s got their own ambitions. Look at you. You couldโ€™ve been a wealthy socialite. Instead, here you are, wandering around in the middle of the night, all alone.โ€

Classic Tanyaโ€”always ready with a comeback. For every jab I threw, she had one locked and loaded.

I yawned. โ€œLooks like your business skills arenโ€™t the only thing improving. Your witโ€™s sharper than ever.โ€

With that, I stood, ready to call it a night. Sleep was pulling me like gravity.

Just as I turned to leave, Tanyaโ€™s voice stopped me. โ€œHave you seen Jace recently?โ€
