Chapter 776

Jace had been our only real connection, but now? He wasnโ€™t tied to either of us anymore. Lifeโ€™s funny like that.

โ€œOh? Havenโ€™t seen him lately?โ€ I asked, my smile faint but knowing.

Tanya didnโ€™t dodge it. โ€œNo, I havenโ€™t.โ€

โ€œAlready missing him?โ€ I teased, half-joking.

โ€œMaybe a little,โ€ she replied, unexpectedly blunt.

โ€œThen go find him.โ€

Tanya smirked. โ€œIf I could find him, do you think Iโ€™d waste my time asking you?โ€

Talking to Tanya was like tiptoeing through a minefieldโ€”one wrong move, and boom. The more combative she got, the calmer I felt. Crazy, isnโ€™t it? The guy who used to bend over backward for you just vanished. Menโ€™s heartsโ€”so โ€˜reliable,โ€™ right?

โ€œNo need to rub it in,โ€ she snapped.

I studied her for a moment. She wasnโ€™t the same Tanya from before. I couldnโ€™t help but wonder what Jace would think if he saw her like this.

โ€œDo you regret it?โ€ I asked casually, leaning against the doorframe.

โ€œNo.โ€ Her answer was sharp, no hesitation.

Which, of course, only made it more obvious. That kind of firm denial? Always a dead giveaway someoneโ€™s hiding whatโ€™s really in their heart.

I tilted my head, considering her. โ€œIf you hadnโ€™t been so obsessed with chasing wealth, you and Desmond might actually be happy together right now.โ€

Tanya didnโ€™t respond, so I sighed. โ€œAfter everything Iโ€™ve been through, Iโ€™ve realized no amount of money or status compares to a simple, peaceful life.โ€

I wasnโ€™t trying to poke at herโ€”I was just saying how I felt.

โ€œThese days, my favorite thing is taking a walk. Every time I see a couple riding a bike together or carrying groceries home, I think, that must be what happiness looks like.โ€ I gave her a soft smile. โ€œYouโ€™ve had that before, havenโ€™t you?โ€

She wanted more, always more. Sure, she hadnโ€™t made it to the top, but in this bar? She was still someone people looked up to. But I didnโ€™t buy for a second that, on nights like this, surrounded by loud music and fake smiles, she didnโ€™t feel that creeping emptiness.

Tanyaโ€™s expression darkened, but she stayed defiant, letting out a cold laugh. โ€œThatโ€™s just your perspective.โ€

Then she stood abruptly. โ€œKeira, youโ€™ve gotten real chatty lately. What, trying to be some kind of savior? If so, save it for somewhere elseโ€”youโ€™re barking up the wrong tree.โ€

She said it like she owned the place.

Still, I didnโ€™t bother snapping back. If letting her talk down to me made her feel better, Iโ€™d let her have it.

I stepped out of the bar and froze when I saw Yuna waiting for me. Iโ€™d assumed she didnโ€™t want to see me and had already left.

โ€œWhat are you doing singing in a place like this? Out of money?โ€ I asked bluntly.

โ€œNo, Iโ€™m not. But if thereโ€™s money to make, why not make it?โ€

Hard to argue with that logic.

I had to admit, Yuna was fiercely independent. Even though she couldโ€™ve leaned on Hayden, she chose to earn her own way.

Thinking about Tanyaโ€™s schemes and the chaotic vibe of the bar, I couldnโ€™t help but say, โ€œThis place isnโ€™t clean or safe. If you want to sing, you can alwaysโ€”โ€

She cut me off before I could finish. โ€œArenโ€™t you here in the middle of the night, too? And with how chummy you seemed with Tanya, you must be a regular.โ€

The jab was sharp, but it was the assumption that made me laugh. She had no idea I owned the bar.

โ€œFair enough,โ€ I said.

โ€œIโ€™m heading back to school next week,โ€ Yuna said, as if to remind me.

I nodded. โ€œNeed anything from me?โ€

Despite her attitude lately, she was still a kid in my eyes. Her little digs didnโ€™t bother me. It reminded me of howโ€ฆ
