Chapter 783

Nate wrapped Lena in his arms. โ€œIโ€™m sorryโ€ฆโ€

Heโ€™d said that more times than โ€œI love you,โ€ and honestly, she was over it.

โ€œThen go,โ€ she said, gently peeling his arms off.

He kissed her neck softly, lingering. โ€œIโ€™ll try to make it back for lunch.โ€

โ€œThereโ€™s no need,โ€ she replied, her voice steady. โ€œNate, letโ€™s break up.โ€

Nate froze. โ€œLenaโ€ฆโ€

โ€œKeiraโ€™s uncle and aunt passed away. Yesterday,โ€ she said, her voice breaking just enough to show the weight of it.

Nateโ€™s brows knit. โ€œWhat? Thatโ€™s impossibleโ€”her aunt wasnโ€™t that badโ€ฆโ€

โ€œThey ended their lives. Hand in hand.โ€

The words hit like a punch, and Lenaโ€™s face twisted with pain heโ€™d never seen before. Heโ€™d noticed her mood shift last night, but he was too caught up in work to ask. Now it all made sense.

โ€œWhy?โ€ he whispered. โ€œThey couldโ€™ve waited; the surgery mightโ€™ve helpedโ€”โ€

โ€œMaybe they didnโ€™t want to survive just to keep suffering,โ€ she said quietly.

His throat tightened. โ€œLena, are you saying this is my fault?โ€

Heโ€™d visited Keiraโ€™s uncle and aunt, hadnโ€™t he? If heโ€™d just made time for the surgery, given them even a sliver of hopeโ€”maybe, just maybe, they wouldnโ€™t have ended things like this.

Her head shook. โ€œNo. Iโ€™m not blaming you.โ€

โ€œThen why are you breaking up with me?โ€ His voice cracked, but her resolve only hardened.

โ€œNate, youโ€™re amazingโ€”brilliant, even. But youโ€™re not boyfriend material.โ€

Her gaze dropped as she fought back tears.

โ€œLenaโ€ฆ

โ€œWeโ€™ve been together for months, Nate. Really think about itโ€”how much time have we actually spent together? I know weโ€™re both busy and our jobs are huge. I get that love isnโ€™t all romance and roses. But isnโ€™t the point of being with someone to have a safe place? Someone to lean on when youโ€™re exhausted? Someone whoโ€™s there when it hurts?โ€

She shook her head. โ€œWe donโ€™t have that. When we need each other most, weโ€™re always apart. And even when youโ€™re here, your mindโ€™s somewhere elseโ€”work, patients, emergencies. Always something more important.โ€

โ€œNate, you canโ€™t give me what I need as a boyfriendโ€”care, time, presence. Maybe Iโ€™m just too ordinary for you, but I need those things.โ€

A bitter laugh escaped her lips. โ€œSo yeah, letโ€™s break up.โ€

Nate swallowed hard, his throat tight. He couldnโ€™t argueโ€”she was right. Every word hit home. Especially the part he didnโ€™t want to admit: when sheโ€™d been kidnapped and hurt, he hadnโ€™t been there.

Lena had said everything she needed to, and the silence between them grew heavier, almost suffocating.

Finally, she broke it. โ€œDonโ€™t you have something urgent to do? You should go.โ€

She pushed his suitcase toward him. โ€œItโ€™s all packed. When youโ€™re done with work, donโ€™t come back.โ€

Nate glanced at the suitcase, then at her. The pain on her face cut deeper than anything sheโ€™d said. Picking up the bag, he muttered, โ€œLena, I know Iโ€™ve failed. But Iโ€™ll changeโ€”Iโ€™ll figure it out.โ€

She didnโ€™t answer. She just turned her back on him.

He hesitated, standing there like he might say more, but then he left.

When the door clicked shut, it felt like something shattered inside her. The ache in her chest was so sharp it made her stumble.

She moved to the window, watching as he walked to the car, suitcase in hand. Her vision blurred until her eyes burned. Her fingers gripped the windowsill, but her head dropped. A tear slid down her cheek, hitting the floor with a quiet splatter.

And like everything else, it broke into a thousand pieces.
