Chapter 783
Nate wrapped Lena in his arms. โIโm sorryโฆโ
Heโd said that more times than โI love you,โ and honestly, she was over it.
โThen go,โ she said, gently peeling his arms off.
He kissed her neck softly, lingering. โIโll try to make it back for lunch.โ
โThereโs no need,โ she replied, her voice steady. โNate, letโs break up.โ
Nate froze. โLenaโฆโ
โKeiraโs uncle and aunt passed away. Yesterday,โ she said, her voice breaking just enough to show the weight of it.
Nateโs brows knit. โWhat? Thatโs impossibleโher aunt wasnโt that badโฆโ
โThey ended their lives. Hand in hand.โ
The words hit like a punch, and Lenaโs face twisted with pain heโd never seen before. Heโd noticed her mood shift last night, but he was too caught up in work to ask. Now it all made sense.
โWhy?โ he whispered. โThey couldโve waited; the surgery mightโve helpedโโ
โMaybe they didnโt want to survive just to keep suffering,โ she said quietly.
His throat tightened. โLena, are you saying this is my fault?โ
Heโd visited Keiraโs uncle and aunt, hadnโt he? If heโd just made time for the surgery, given them even a sliver of hopeโmaybe, just maybe, they wouldnโt have ended things like this.
Her head shook. โNo. Iโm not blaming you.โ
โThen why are you breaking up with me?โ His voice cracked, but her resolve only hardened.
โNate, youโre amazingโbrilliant, even. But youโre not boyfriend material.โ
Her gaze dropped as she fought back tears.
โLenaโฆ
โWeโve been together for months, Nate. Really think about itโhow much time have we actually spent together? I know weโre both busy and our jobs are huge. I get that love isnโt all romance and roses. But isnโt the point of being with someone to have a safe place? Someone to lean on when youโre exhausted? Someone whoโs there when it hurts?โ
She shook her head. โWe donโt have that. When we need each other most, weโre always apart. And even when youโre here, your mindโs somewhere elseโwork, patients, emergencies. Always something more important.โ
โNate, you canโt give me what I need as a boyfriendโcare, time, presence. Maybe Iโm just too ordinary for you, but I need those things.โ
A bitter laugh escaped her lips. โSo yeah, letโs break up.โ
Nate swallowed hard, his throat tight. He couldnโt argueโshe was right. Every word hit home. Especially the part he didnโt want to admit: when sheโd been kidnapped and hurt, he hadnโt been there.
Lena had said everything she needed to, and the silence between them grew heavier, almost suffocating.
Finally, she broke it. โDonโt you have something urgent to do? You should go.โ
She pushed his suitcase toward him. โItโs all packed. When youโre done with work, donโt come back.โ
Nate glanced at the suitcase, then at her. The pain on her face cut deeper than anything sheโd said. Picking up the bag, he muttered, โLena, I know Iโve failed. But Iโll changeโIโll figure it out.โ
She didnโt answer. She just turned her back on him.
He hesitated, standing there like he might say more, but then he left.
When the door clicked shut, it felt like something shattered inside her. The ache in her chest was so sharp it made her stumble.
She moved to the window, watching as he walked to the car, suitcase in hand. Her vision blurred until her eyes burned. Her fingers gripped the windowsill, but her head dropped. A tear slid down her cheek, hitting the floor with a quiet splatter.
And like everything else, it broke into a thousand pieces.
