Chapter 786

Lena didnโ€™t answer. A few seconds later, she hung up.

I blinked, a little surprised. Guess sheโ€™d made up her mind. That was Lena for youโ€”straight to the point, no second-guessing. Honestly, she was braver than me, like that.

Not that I hadnโ€™t been firm before. When I dumped Jace, it was done. The random run-ins afterward? Not exactly my choice. Still, seeing Lena and Nate end like this? A bit of a downer, but I kept my mouth shut. Loveโ€™s like coffeeโ€”only you know if itโ€™s bitter or sweet.

Lenaโ€™s phone buzzed again while we sipped tea. She glanced at it, saw the message from Nate: [Lena, Iโ€™m leaving.]

Her expression didnโ€™t even twitch. โ€œIโ€™ll block him later,โ€ she said casually.

โ€œIf you canโ€™t do it, Iโ€™ll gladly help,โ€ I teased, smirking.

She shot me a lookโ€”the classic โ€œbestie, stop talkingโ€ glare. By the time we left with the package, Nate was still sitting in her inbox, unanswered.

On the ride home, Lena scrolled through her phone. I caught her hovering over Nateโ€™s chat, skimming their old texts. After a second, she laughed, dry and sharp.

โ€œWhatโ€™s funny?โ€ I asked, curious.

She handed me her phone. โ€œOur whole chat history. Barely a few messages. Itโ€™s shorter than those annoying work group texts from work.โ€

I didnโ€™t bother looking, just passed it back. โ€œWell, youโ€™re done with him. Why keep scrolling?โ€

Lena shrugged, then sighed. โ€œRea, do you think Iโ€™ve ever even been in a real relationship?โ€ Without waiting for my answer, she blocked him, deleted his number, and put her phone away.

โ€œBold move,โ€ I said, raising an eyebrow. โ€œWhat if you need to reach him someday?โ€

She snorted. โ€œHeโ€™s a heart surgeon, and Iโ€™m an OB. What would we even talk about? Unless his wifeโ€™s having a baby.โ€

โ€œOr your future husband needs heart surgery,โ€ I joked.

Her eye-roll was legendary. โ€œYouโ€™re the worst bestie ever.โ€

Grinning, I bumped my head against hers. โ€œBlocking himโ€™s smart. Now he canโ€™t spam you with one-last-chance texts.โ€

She didnโ€™t reply, just stared out the window. I knew that look. Breaking up sucked, no matter how strong you tried to act.

When the car stopped at the Ace house, Lena inhaled like she was about to dive underwater. She glanced at me, and I squeezed her hand. โ€œDonโ€™t worry. Iโ€™ll handle your mom. And if your uncle starts anything, Iโ€™ve got your back.โ€

She smirked. โ€œThen eat double tonight. Consider it payment.โ€

Inside, her mom, Carol, wasted no time pulling Lena aside. I caught her pinching Lenaโ€™s armโ€”ouch.

โ€œYou brat!โ€ Carol hissed. โ€œI thought you werenโ€™t coming!โ€

Lena winced, rubbing her arm. โ€œWhat, were you planning to announce my disownment on Facebook?โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t tempt me.โ€ Carol smoothed her clothes like a stylist on a mission. โ€œWhy are you dressed so plain? And whereโ€™s Nate? Didnโ€™t he come back?โ€

Lena cleared her throat. โ€œWhatโ€™s he got to do with anything?โ€

Carol frowned. โ€œDonโ€™t tell me heโ€™s busy with work again.โ€

Apparently, a breakup wasnโ€™t even on her radar.

โ€œMom, we broke up,โ€ Lena said.

No use dragging it outโ€”if not today, sheโ€™d have to spill it tomorrow.

Carol froze, processing. Then she shrugged. โ€œFine. Thereโ€™ll be plenty of cute guys tonight. Pick one you like.โ€
