Listen to this chapter:

โ€œWrap it up in a gift boxโ€”itโ€™s for someone,โ€ Lindey told the clerk. She turned, and the moment her eyes landed on me, her voice wavered. โ€œRea.โ€

โ€œHi Lindey,โ€ I said, stepping toward her.

Her eyes filled with tears almost instantly. โ€œReaโ€ฆโ€ That was all she managed to say. Just my name, like she had so much on her mind but couldnโ€™t get the words out.

I studied her quietly. In just a few months, her hair had more streaks of gray, and her face looked tired, drained of life. The spark in her eyes was gone. I didnโ€™t need to ask how sheโ€™d been. Matthewโ€™s illness, the tension between her sons, the family crumblingโ€”it was written all over her face.

It all seemed to unravel after I broke up with Jace. They say a peaceful family brings prosperity, and looking at her now, I finally got it.

โ€œHow have you been?โ€ she asked after a long pause.

โ€œIโ€™m doing well.โ€

She nodded quickly, almost like she needed to convince herself. โ€œThatโ€™s good. Thatโ€™s really good.โ€

I didnโ€™t ask how she was. The answer was painfully obvious.

โ€œAre you here picking out artwork for someone?โ€ she asked, clearly trying to fill the silence.

โ€œItโ€™s my grandpaโ€™s birthday,โ€ Lena chimed in. โ€œReaโ€™s helping pick a gift for him.โ€

โ€œReaโ€™s going to Edisonโ€™s?โ€ Lindeyโ€™s voice cracked slightly. โ€œThatโ€™s wonderful. Edison always liked Rea. Heโ€™s mentioned her beforeโ€ฆโ€ Her words trailed off as she turned away, swallowing back tears.

I hated seeing her like this. It hurt, but I didnโ€™t know what to say. โ€œLindey, Iโ€™ll go make my selection now,โ€ I said gently.

โ€œRea,โ€ she called after me. Her lips moved silently before she finally spoke. โ€œCould youโ€ฆ could you come visit sometime? Matthew doesnโ€™t have much time left. He really wants to see you.โ€

Hearing those wordsโ€”โ€œdoesnโ€™t have much time leftโ€โ€”hit me harder than I expected.

โ€œโ€ฆAlright,โ€ I said after a moment.

They say people are most honest near the end, and for all Matthewโ€™s wrongs, it felt like fate had already caught up with him.

โ€œThank you,โ€ Lindey said, her relief evident. โ€œLet me know when youโ€™ll come, and Iโ€™ll make gnocchi and all your favorite dishes.โ€

Her gratitude and excitement left me feeling heavy. I nodded. โ€œOkay.โ€

At the register, Lindey tried to pay for my selection. โ€œLet me handle it,โ€ she insisted. โ€œLindey, no,โ€ I said firmly. โ€œItโ€™s a gift from me. It only counts if I pay for it myself.โ€

She hesitated but eventually nodded, walking away, though she kept glancing back over her shoulder.

As soon as she was gone, Lena let out a long sigh. โ€œUgh.โ€

We went back to picking a gift for her grandpa. When we made our choice, a staff member approached with a couple of small boxes.

โ€œMini tarts,โ€ the clerk explained with a smile.

โ€œOh, your store gives out treats now? Fancy,โ€ Lena joked.

The clerk smiled but didnโ€™t say more. I looked down at the box in my hand, then toward the door, where Lindey had disappeared into the distance.

These werenโ€™t freebies from the store. She bought them for me because she remembered how much I loved them.

My throat tightened, and I swallowed hard to push back the emotion welling up.

As Lena and I sat eating the mini tarts, waiting for the gift to be wrapped, her phone buzzed.

It was Nate.
