Chapter 82
I stormed over to Hayden and demanded an explanation. โWhatโs the deal? Why are we suddenly taking a break?โ
โTwo days off a week are government-mandated,โ Hayden replied, annoyingly calm. โConsidering our tight schedule, one day off shouldnโt be a big deal, right?โ
His calmness only fueled my frustration. โI get it, but weโre up against a serious deadline. Iโve already told you we have to meet it. Canโt we just postpone the break? Iโll even pay you extra.โ
Hayden didnโt break eye contact, his gaze unwavering. โItโs not about the money, Ms. Kay. Weโre not machines. People need rest to do good work.โ
He wasnโt wrong, but this wasnโt just any project.
I exhaled slowly, trying to steady my nerves. โSo you really need to rest today?โ
โYes,โ Hayden said, his tone brooking no argument. Knowing I couldnโt win, I turned to walk away.
โAnd you all need to rest too,โ he added.
I spun around, my anger bubbling over. โYou just worry about your own rest. Whether we rest or not is none of your concern.โ
Demi, standing nearby, barely suppressed laughter.
Hayden didnโt flinch. โMs. Kay, if you donโt rest properly, you wonโt be able to work efficiently. Just like lastโโ
โHayden Hart!โ I cut him off, my palms sweating.
This jerk! Iโd just told him not to mention last night, and here he was, almost revealing everything.
We locked eyes, and after what felt like an eternity, I finally caved. โFine, weโll rest too.โ
โDemi, letโs go,โ I called.
But Hayden wasnโt finished. โMs. Kay,โ he stopped me, โI need your help today.โ
My frustration threatened to boil over. I clenched my teeth. โWhat? You need someone to give you a massage, or perhaps a back rub?โ
โNo, nothing like that. I just need to buy some things and could use a guide,โ Hayden replied, as if it were perfectly normal.
I almost laughed. โFine, let Demi go withโโ
โI want you to come with me!โ Hayden interrupted.
โPfft!โ Demi finally burst into laughter.
I found myself laughing too. This wasnโt the cold, stoic Hayden I knewโhe was acting more like a stubborn three-year-old.
โMr. Hart, youโre not a kid anymore. Donโt you think this is a bitโฆsilly?โ I teased.
Hayden didnโt flinch. โIโm not familiar with the area. Whatโs wrong with asking for your help? Besides, you promisedโโ
โAlright, Iโll go!โ I cut him off, knowing exactly where he was headed. If I didnโt agree, heโd definitely bring up the Chiverton trip, and I couldnโt let Demi hear about that.
โShould I join you guys?โ Demi asked, clearly eager to participate.
โSure!โ
โNo!โ
We spoke simultaneouslyโme agreeing, him refusing.
Demi looked between us, completely confused. Hayden interjected, โMs. Young, it might be inconvenient for you to tag along. Donโt you think so, Ms. Kay?โ
He was shifting the responsibility to me.
From the look in his eyes, I knew that if I insisted on bringing Demi, heโd reveal the Chiverton incident. This is why lying is so detrimentalโone lie can snowball into many more.
I sighed and turned to Demi. โItโs your day off. Why not spend it with your boyfriend? Iโm sure he misses you.โ
Demi shot me a glare, clearly annoyed by my mention of her boyfriend in front of Hayden. I ignored her reaction, and with Haydenโs gaze practically burning into me, she finally left, though she kept throwing suspicious glances back at us. I could tell she was starting to question what was really going on between Hayden and me.
That was a problem for another day. Right now, I had to figure out how to handle Hayden.
