Chapter 83

โ€œWhatโ€™s your deal? Are you seriously using our acquaintance and last nightโ€™s incident to blackmail me?โ€ I confronted Hayden.

โ€œNo,โ€ he said, but his eyes avoided mine. His guilty expression was telling. I clenched my fists, resisting the urge to punch him.

โ€œIโ€™m unfamiliar with this place. Whatโ€™s wrong with asking for your help? Iโ€™ve helped you before,โ€ Hayden added, his tone softening, almost pleadingly.

He was right. Debts, whether monetary or otherwise, should be repaid.

I sighed. โ€œOkay, Mr. Hart, where do you want to go today? What do you need to buy? Just tell me, and Iโ€™ll take you.โ€

โ€œI want to check out some apartments,โ€ he said, surprising me.

I blinked. โ€œLooking for an apartment? Arenโ€™t you heading back once your work here is done?โ€

โ€œI might not be going back, so Iโ€™m planning ahead,โ€ Haydenโ€™s words struck me. Something about it felt unsettling.

โ€œBut your company isnโ€™t based here,โ€ I reminded him.

โ€œI could quit!โ€

I was speechless.

โ€œOh, and Iโ€™m rentingโ€”Iโ€™m broke right now, canโ€™t afford to buy,โ€ Hayden added casually, without a hint of embarrassment. That was unusual. Most men his age try to maintain appearances, even going into debt for flashy cars and watches. But Hayden's honesty was refreshing.

โ€œAnd you still want to quit your job?โ€ I asked, my voice wavering slightly.

He didnโ€™t respond, as if he hadnโ€™t heard me. Perhaps his admission of being broke made me feel a touch sympathetic. So I drove him downtown.

โ€œThis is the city center. The rent here must be pretty steep,โ€ he observed.

โ€œItโ€™s cheaper in the suburbs, but thatโ€™s far out, and commuting would be a hassle. As a lighting engineer, if youโ€™re thinking of staying long-term, youโ€™ll probably end up working in the CBD. Renting downtown will save you time,โ€ I suggested.

He remained silent, so remembering his financial situation, I added, โ€œI could lend you the money. You can pay me back whenever.โ€

โ€œThat sounds like youโ€™re offering to be my sugar mama,โ€ Hayden retorted, catching me completely off guard. I nearly choked.

I glared at him, considering his possible feelings for me, and the fact that heโ€™d once considered marrying me. I smirked sarcastically. โ€œYouโ€™re overthinking it. Iโ€™m actually on the lookout for a wealthy boyfriend myself.โ€

Haydenโ€™s expression darkened.

I started the car. โ€œFine, letโ€™s go check out the suburbs then.โ€

But as we pulled up to a real estate agency, my phone rang.

โ€œHelloโ€ฆ What? Alright, Iโ€™ll be right there.โ€ I hung up and turned to Hayden. โ€œYou go ahead and check out the apartments. Iโ€™ve got something to deal with.โ€

Hayden didnโ€™t move. โ€œWhatโ€™s going on?โ€

I didnโ€™t hide it. โ€œThe water pipes in my apartment broke. I need to get someone to fix them.โ€ My downstairs neighbor had called, reporting flooding in the hallway.

โ€œI can fix it,โ€ Hayden offered, surprising me again.

Before I could respond, he added, โ€œIf you keep delaying, the water might damage someone elseโ€™s apartment, and youโ€™ll have to pay for their repairs too.โ€

He seemed remarkably resourceful. Not wanting to waste time, I drove him to my building.

As soon as we entered the hallway, we saw water cascading down the walls, with a group of neighbors gathered, pointing and chattering.

Hayden was out of the car before I could react, heading straight for the leak. After a quick inspection, he asked, โ€œWhereโ€™s the main water valve?โ€

A neighbor pointed to a rusty metal plate on the ground. โ€œItโ€™s under there, but itโ€™s all rusted. We canโ€™t turn it.โ€

Before they finished, Hayden had lifted the plate. He looked at me and asked, โ€œWhich floor and apartment are you in?โ€

โ€œFourth floor, east unit.โ€

As I spoke, I watched him kneel, stretching his arm to grip the rusted valve. With a firm twist, he turned it.
