Listen to this chapter:

โ€œDo you want the truth?โ€ Haydenโ€™s voice was calm.

โ€œYou promised you wouldnโ€™t lie to me,โ€ I replied, bitterness creeping into my tone as I threw his broken promise back at him.

โ€œKiki, I lied before because I didnโ€™t have a choice,โ€ he said, his eyes locked on mine, clear and unflinching. โ€œBut from now on, I swear Iโ€™ll never lie to you again.โ€

I dropped my gaze. โ€œLetโ€™s not talk about the future anymore.โ€

I forced a faint smile. โ€œLetโ€™s just focus on the present.โ€

When I was little, my parents painted big dreams of the future for me, but they were gone before any of it could happen. Jace promised me forever, then shattered it. Even Wayne once vowed to always take care of me, only for his love to spiral into something dark and possessive.

And Hayden? He said forever, tooโ€”right before almost marrying someone else.

So, no. I donโ€™t think about the future anymore. I donโ€™t trust it. All I want is to live in the now.

Haydenโ€™s face clouded for a second before he nodded. โ€œAlright.โ€

When he mentioned needing to meet Jace, I didnโ€™t ask why. If he wanted to go, I wouldnโ€™t stop him.

Later, though, when Jace didnโ€™t answer his phone, Hayden came to me. โ€œHis numberโ€™s not connecting. Do you have another way to reach him?โ€

โ€œThe Johnston residence or the company, but the companyโ€™s shut down because of Wayneโ€™s case,โ€ I said, pausing. โ€œAs for the houseโ€ฆโ€

Just thinking about the Johnston residence made my chest ache. Matthew and Lindey were gone, and Jace probably couldnโ€™t bring himself to go back. That place had lost everyone he loved.

โ€œThen where else could he be? Any of his friends know?โ€ Hayden asked.

I thought for a moment before calling Gavin. โ€œDo you know where Jace is? I canโ€™t get through to him.โ€

There was a pause on the line. โ€œMs. Kay, I was just about to call you.โ€

His timing was suspicious, but I wasnโ€™t in the mood to care. โ€œWhat about Jace?โ€

โ€œHeโ€™sโ€ฆโ€ Gavin hesitated, โ€œAt Cloudscape Monastery.โ€

I froze. What was he doing there?

โ€œGot it,โ€ I said, ready to hang up, but Gavin stopped me.

โ€œMs. Kay, when are you available? Thereโ€™s something I need to discuss with you in person.โ€ His voice carried a seriousness that wasnโ€™t meant for a phone call.

โ€œIs it urgent?โ€

โ€œItโ€™d be best to meet within the next two days,โ€ he replied.

โ€œTomorrow, then. Iโ€™m going to see Jace today.โ€

Sure, I was tagging along with Hayden, but deep down, I wanted to see Jace for myself.

The last time Iโ€™d seen him was when Cole had me locked up. Everything had been a chaotic blur back then.

โ€œUnderstood. Tomorrow at 2 p.m., at the coffee shop by the office?โ€ Gavin asked, as efficient as always.

โ€œWorks for me. See you then.โ€

After ending the call, Hayden and I headed to Cloudscape Monastery. The ride was quiet, my thoughts circling back to Abbot Levinsky and Mrs. Drago. Both of them had perished in the fire, and the memory still weighed heavy.

When we arrived, the monastery had been repaired, bustling with visitors like nothing tragic had ever happened.

I had no idea where to find Jace, so we asked around. Eventually, we spotted himโ€”and I stopped in my tracks.

Jace was sitting there, wearing neutral-toned clothes that resembled spiritual robes. He lookedโ€ฆ serene, like he didnโ€™t belong in this world anymore.

Hayden and I exchanged a glance, both too stunned to speak.

Jace noticed us. His face was calm, his eyes devoid of any emotion. He gestured for us to sit. โ€œPlease, take a seat and listen for a while.โ€
