Chapter 848 +25 Bonus
I was laughing so hard my sides hurt, tears streaming down my face. Lena just sat there, arms crossed, waiting for me to finish.
โYou good now? Because I actually need your help.โ
If Lena was asking me for advice, she must have been really stuck. Normally, sheโs the one with all the answers.
โOkay,โ I said, catching my breath. โFirst, spill. Does Nate even still have a shot?โ
She grabbed an orange off the table and started peeling it. โWhat do you think?โ When sheโs done with someone, sheโs done. No second chances, no rewrites. Nate clearly hadnโt gotten that memo, though, because here he was, pulling out all the stops to win her back.
And then there was Aaronโher technically-not-really-blood-related uncle and childhood friend. Cue the awkward family ties turned unexpected complication drama.
โIf youโre not giving Nate any hope, just move in with your uncle,โ I said.
She arched a brow. โWhy?โ
โBecause Nateโs literally working at this hospital to be near you. Daytime interactions? Check. Evening pop-ins? I bet heโs already planning those too. And Iโd bet good money heโs staying somewhere nearby just to make it extra convenient.โ
Lena finished peeling the orange and handed it to me like a reward. โNot bad. Here, you earned this.โ
I popped a slice in my mouth. โSee? If you donโt give him chances in the evenings, heโll eventually get the hint.โ
โThe problem is, I donโt want to deal with Uncle Aaron,โ Lena admitted, finally cutting to the chase.
Ah, there it was.
โWhy not? Is this about thatโฆawkward thing from before?โ
Lena tilted her head, considering it, then shook it off. โThat was years ago. And after everything Iโve been through, Iโm used to seeing all kinds of bodies. Stuff like that doesnโt bother me anymore.โ
โThen whatโs the issue?โ I pressed.
She leaned back in her chair, spinning it lazily. โI donโt know.โ
โLena,โ I said, giving her a look. โYou do knowโฆโ
She shook her head like I was way off base. โDonโt read into it. Heโs my uncle.โ
Technically not by blood, but I got what she meant. Feelings like hers were complicated, and no outsider could really untangle them. So I decided to let it go.
โWell,โ I said, โif Aaronโs out and you donโt want to fight your parents, youโre fresh out of options. Aaronโs place is the least painful route.โ
Her glare could have melted steel. โAwesome. Glad we had this super-helpful talk.โ
โAfter being away from Nate so long, donโt you ever feel, you know, lonely?โ I asked, going full send into risky territory.
Lena narrowed her eyes, leaning in like she was about to scold me. โYouโre pregnant. Keep those thoughts wholesome or youโll mess up your babyโs vibes.โ
That set me off all over again, laughing so loudly that Hayden later told me he could hear me from the elevator.
When he walked in, carrying food heโd cooked himself, he looked every bit the husband-of-the-year.
โTell me if itโs good,โ he said, setting it down in front of me. โIโll tweak it if thereโs anything you donโt like.โ
I could tell this wasnโt just about dinnerโit was Haydenโs way of showing he was all in, trying to make up for everything that had happened.
โHayden,โ I said between bites, โwhatโs your plan going forward?โ
Sure, I was curious about his career, like most wives probably are. It wasnโt about him needing a flashy title or running a company. He could do something simple, something he lovedโbut he needed his own goals. He couldnโt just spend his days looking after me.
He looked at me, confused. โWhy are you asking now?โ
โIโm worried weโll go broke buying baby formula,โ I teased.
Letโs be realโwith my assets, we were set for life. But that wasnโt the point. Hayden wasnโt the type to sit around living off someone elseโs money, even mine. He thrived on having his own goals, his own purpose.
He hadnโt mentioned anything about what he wanted to do next, and that wasnโt like him. So I askedโnot to push, but to make sure he knew I was here to listen to whatever was on his mind.
