Chapter 848 +25 Bonus

I was laughing so hard my sides hurt, tears streaming down my face. Lena just sat there, arms crossed, waiting for me to finish.

โ€œYou good now? Because I actually need your help.โ€

If Lena was asking me for advice, she must have been really stuck. Normally, sheโ€™s the one with all the answers.

โ€œOkay,โ€ I said, catching my breath. โ€œFirst, spill. Does Nate even still have a shot?โ€

She grabbed an orange off the table and started peeling it. โ€œWhat do you think?โ€ When sheโ€™s done with someone, sheโ€™s done. No second chances, no rewrites. Nate clearly hadnโ€™t gotten that memo, though, because here he was, pulling out all the stops to win her back.

And then there was Aaronโ€”her technically-not-really-blood-related uncle and childhood friend. Cue the awkward family ties turned unexpected complication drama.

โ€œIf youโ€™re not giving Nate any hope, just move in with your uncle,โ€ I said.

She arched a brow. โ€œWhy?โ€

โ€œBecause Nateโ€™s literally working at this hospital to be near you. Daytime interactions? Check. Evening pop-ins? I bet heโ€™s already planning those too. And Iโ€™d bet good money heโ€™s staying somewhere nearby just to make it extra convenient.โ€

Lena finished peeling the orange and handed it to me like a reward. โ€œNot bad. Here, you earned this.โ€

I popped a slice in my mouth. โ€œSee? If you donโ€™t give him chances in the evenings, heโ€™ll eventually get the hint.โ€

โ€œThe problem is, I donโ€™t want to deal with Uncle Aaron,โ€ Lena admitted, finally cutting to the chase.

Ah, there it was.

โ€œWhy not? Is this about thatโ€ฆawkward thing from before?โ€

Lena tilted her head, considering it, then shook it off. โ€œThat was years ago. And after everything Iโ€™ve been through, Iโ€™m used to seeing all kinds of bodies. Stuff like that doesnโ€™t bother me anymore.โ€

โ€œThen whatโ€™s the issue?โ€ I pressed.

She leaned back in her chair, spinning it lazily. โ€œI donโ€™t know.โ€

โ€œLena,โ€ I said, giving her a look. โ€œYou do knowโ€ฆโ€

She shook her head like I was way off base. โ€œDonโ€™t read into it. Heโ€™s my uncle.โ€

Technically not by blood, but I got what she meant. Feelings like hers were complicated, and no outsider could really untangle them. So I decided to let it go.

โ€œWell,โ€ I said, โ€œif Aaronโ€™s out and you donโ€™t want to fight your parents, youโ€™re fresh out of options. Aaronโ€™s place is the least painful route.โ€

Her glare could have melted steel. โ€œAwesome. Glad we had this super-helpful talk.โ€

โ€œAfter being away from Nate so long, donโ€™t you ever feel, you know, lonely?โ€ I asked, going full send into risky territory.

Lena narrowed her eyes, leaning in like she was about to scold me. โ€œYouโ€™re pregnant. Keep those thoughts wholesome or youโ€™ll mess up your babyโ€™s vibes.โ€

That set me off all over again, laughing so loudly that Hayden later told me he could hear me from the elevator.

When he walked in, carrying food heโ€™d cooked himself, he looked every bit the husband-of-the-year.

โ€œTell me if itโ€™s good,โ€ he said, setting it down in front of me. โ€œIโ€™ll tweak it if thereโ€™s anything you donโ€™t like.โ€

I could tell this wasnโ€™t just about dinnerโ€”it was Haydenโ€™s way of showing he was all in, trying to make up for everything that had happened.

โ€œHayden,โ€ I said between bites, โ€œwhatโ€™s your plan going forward?โ€

Sure, I was curious about his career, like most wives probably are. It wasnโ€™t about him needing a flashy title or running a company. He could do something simple, something he lovedโ€”but he needed his own goals. He couldnโ€™t just spend his days looking after me.

He looked at me, confused. โ€œWhy are you asking now?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m worried weโ€™ll go broke buying baby formula,โ€ I teased.

Letโ€™s be realโ€”with my assets, we were set for life. But that wasnโ€™t the point. Hayden wasnโ€™t the type to sit around living off someone elseโ€™s money, even mine. He thrived on having his own goals, his own purpose.

He hadnโ€™t mentioned anything about what he wanted to do next, and that wasnโ€™t like him. So I askedโ€”not to push, but to make sure he knew I was here to listen to whatever was on his mind.
