Chapter 849
โThe Hart family wants me to come back,โ Hayden said. I immediately understood without him needing further explanation. The Harts had stayed weirdly quiet through all the chaos Hayden had been through. Why? No clue.
โWhat are you thinking?โ I asked. Then, with a sly smile, I added, โLet me guessโyou donโt want to go, but you feel like you should?โ
Hayden noticed I wasnโt eating and nudged my plate closer. โEat first.โ
โTalk, and Iโll eat,โ I shot back.
He pushed my favorite dishes right in front of me. โNo one can make me do something I donโt want to.โ
โThen itโs me youโre worried about?โ I asked, the thought hitting me mid-bite.
Hayden didnโt answer, which, of course, was the answer. My mind raced for a moment before I teased, โWaitโdonโt tell me going back means youโd have to marry Yara?โ
Hayden sighed. โThe Hart heir and the Drago heir are supposed to marry. Itโs been decided for years.โ
So if he didnโt want that, all he had to do was step down as the Hart heir. Easy, right? Except clearly, it wasnโt.
I forced myself to stay light and breezy. โWell, go ahead, then. You and Yara are such a perfect match!โ
Haydenโs gaze snapped to mine, sharp and ice-cold. โWhat did you just say?โ
โI saidโโ
โThink carefully before you speak,โ he warned, his tone dead serious.
Okay, wow. He was actually mad. I refused to back down. โLook, if youโve decided to go back and that means marrying Yara, why shouldnโt I support you? Why are you snapping at me? Iโm so generous like that.โ
The more I talked, the more upset I got. I dropped my fork onto the plate with a clatter and shoved it away. โIโm done.โ
Hayden didnโt try to smooth things over. Instead, he asked, โAre you really okay with it?โ
โYep. Totally fine!โ I snapped, blinking back tears. โAnd when you two get married, Iโll send the fanciest gift ever.โ
The first tear betrayed me, sliding down my cheek. Then the floodgates opened, and I quickly turned my head away. โGo. Go find your Yara. I donโt want to see you.โ
Was I being dramatic? Maybe. But seriouslyโwhat was there to test? If I didnโt care about him, would I have kept this baby? And yet, he always seemed to pick Yara to confide in. Even when he faked his death, she knew, and I was left in the dark.
Now he wanted to play these games? No thanks.
I felt his hand on my shoulder, trying to turn me toward him. I refused to budge.
He sat beside me. โDonโt be mad, Kiki. Itโs my fault, okay? All of it.โ
โGo away,โ I mumbled, shrugging him off. โI donโt want to talk to you.โ
โKiki,โ he murmured, leaning in closer, โI wasnโt testing you, and I wasnโt joking. Iโm not going back to the Hart family.โ
I froze, surprised by the certainty in his voice. Heโd already made up his mind. Hayden sighed, his tone turning serious. โBut if I donโt go back, the Harts wonโt let it slide. Theyโll push backโhard. My mom went through this. She refused their arranged marriage, and after that, she and my dad barely scraped by. In the endโฆ they didnโt survive it.โ
My breath caught. Heโd never told me this before.
It all made sense nowโhe wasnโt afraid for himself. He was terrified of history repeating itself, of us getting caught in the same nightmare his parents did.
โIโm not scared for myself,โ he said quietly, pulling me into his arms. โBut I canโt let you go through the same thing. Youโve had nothing but chaos since we got together, and thatโs on me.โ
Had he really brought chaos into my life? No. If anything, Iโd dragged him into this storm.
I swallowed my pride and turned to look at him. โHayden, as long as youโre with me, Iโm not afraid of anything. Besides, youโre not exactly the kind of guy anyone can control.โ
