Chapter 849

โ€œThe Hart family wants me to come back,โ€ Hayden said. I immediately understood without him needing further explanation. The Harts had stayed weirdly quiet through all the chaos Hayden had been through. Why? No clue.

โ€œWhat are you thinking?โ€ I asked. Then, with a sly smile, I added, โ€œLet me guessโ€”you donโ€™t want to go, but you feel like you should?โ€

Hayden noticed I wasnโ€™t eating and nudged my plate closer. โ€œEat first.โ€

โ€œTalk, and Iโ€™ll eat,โ€ I shot back.

He pushed my favorite dishes right in front of me. โ€œNo one can make me do something I donโ€™t want to.โ€

โ€œThen itโ€™s me youโ€™re worried about?โ€ I asked, the thought hitting me mid-bite.

Hayden didnโ€™t answer, which, of course, was the answer. My mind raced for a moment before I teased, โ€œWaitโ€”donโ€™t tell me going back means youโ€™d have to marry Yara?โ€

Hayden sighed. โ€œThe Hart heir and the Drago heir are supposed to marry. Itโ€™s been decided for years.โ€

So if he didnโ€™t want that, all he had to do was step down as the Hart heir. Easy, right? Except clearly, it wasnโ€™t.

I forced myself to stay light and breezy. โ€œWell, go ahead, then. You and Yara are such a perfect match!โ€

Haydenโ€™s gaze snapped to mine, sharp and ice-cold. โ€œWhat did you just say?โ€

โ€œI saidโ€”โ€

โ€œThink carefully before you speak,โ€ he warned, his tone dead serious.

Okay, wow. He was actually mad. I refused to back down. โ€œLook, if youโ€™ve decided to go back and that means marrying Yara, why shouldnโ€™t I support you? Why are you snapping at me? Iโ€™m so generous like that.โ€

The more I talked, the more upset I got. I dropped my fork onto the plate with a clatter and shoved it away. โ€œIโ€™m done.โ€

Hayden didnโ€™t try to smooth things over. Instead, he asked, โ€œAre you really okay with it?โ€

โ€œYep. Totally fine!โ€ I snapped, blinking back tears. โ€œAnd when you two get married, Iโ€™ll send the fanciest gift ever.โ€

The first tear betrayed me, sliding down my cheek. Then the floodgates opened, and I quickly turned my head away. โ€œGo. Go find your Yara. I donโ€™t want to see you.โ€

Was I being dramatic? Maybe. But seriouslyโ€”what was there to test? If I didnโ€™t care about him, would I have kept this baby? And yet, he always seemed to pick Yara to confide in. Even when he faked his death, she knew, and I was left in the dark.

Now he wanted to play these games? No thanks.

I felt his hand on my shoulder, trying to turn me toward him. I refused to budge.

He sat beside me. โ€œDonโ€™t be mad, Kiki. Itโ€™s my fault, okay? All of it.โ€

โ€œGo away,โ€ I mumbled, shrugging him off. โ€œI donโ€™t want to talk to you.โ€

โ€œKiki,โ€ he murmured, leaning in closer, โ€œI wasnโ€™t testing you, and I wasnโ€™t joking. Iโ€™m not going back to the Hart family.โ€

I froze, surprised by the certainty in his voice. Heโ€™d already made up his mind. Hayden sighed, his tone turning serious. โ€œBut if I donโ€™t go back, the Harts wonโ€™t let it slide. Theyโ€™ll push backโ€”hard. My mom went through this. She refused their arranged marriage, and after that, she and my dad barely scraped by. In the endโ€ฆ they didnโ€™t survive it.โ€

My breath caught. Heโ€™d never told me this before.

It all made sense nowโ€”he wasnโ€™t afraid for himself. He was terrified of history repeating itself, of us getting caught in the same nightmare his parents did.

โ€œIโ€™m not scared for myself,โ€ he said quietly, pulling me into his arms. โ€œBut I canโ€™t let you go through the same thing. Youโ€™ve had nothing but chaos since we got together, and thatโ€™s on me.โ€

Had he really brought chaos into my life? No. If anything, Iโ€™d dragged him into this storm.

I swallowed my pride and turned to look at him. โ€œHayden, as long as youโ€™re with me, Iโ€™m not afraid of anything. Besides, youโ€™re not exactly the kind of guy anyone can control.โ€
