Chapter 851
The caller was Aaron. Thank God.
Lena answered. โUncle Aaron, you want to help me move? Not nowโIโm at work treating a very important patientโฆโ
Aaron didnโt even pretend to buy it. โYour momโs at your office?โ
โWow, psychic much? Yeah, sheโs here. Says sheโs โsick everywhere.โ I gave her a referral for some tests, and now Iโm the heartless daughter.โ Lena jerked her chair back as Carol reached over to grab her phone. โHey!โ
Carol swiped it anyway. Of course, she did. Bringing it to her ear, she said, โAaron.โ
โCarol, Lena said youโre not feeling well?โ Aaronโs voice was calm, smoothโannoyingly unflappable.
Carol coughed lightly, throwing a sharp look Lenaโs way. โIโm fine. She just made me mad. If she doesnโt agree to move back home, Iโm not leaving.โ
โActually, Lena already agreed to move in with me,โ Aaron replied, his tone so breezy it sounded like he wasnโt lying through his teeth. โMy place is close to the hospital, so her commute will be easier.โ
Carol whipped her head around to glare at Lena, thinking, โThis brat hasnโt said anything about moving.โ
โShe agreed?โ Carolโs voice dripped with skepticism.
โYeah. Iโm helping her move tonight. I was even thinking we could have you and Gabriel over for dinner once sheโs settled.โ
โNo need for dinner,โ Carol said, her irritation softening. โBut yes, thatโs better. At least you can keep an eye on her.โ
โAnd it wonโt interrupt you and Gabrielโs alone time either,โ Aaron teased lightly.
โCheeky,โ Carol muttered, but she actually smiled. She glanced at Lena, then said into the phone, โYou talk to her.โ
โAlright, you should head back too,โ Aaron said gently. โHanging around her office while sheโs working isnโt a great look.โ
Carol huffed. โIf youโd told me earlier that she agreed to move in with you, I wouldnโt have made a fuss,โ she said, handing the phone back to Lena.
โHey, Uncle Aaron.โ

โSo, are you moving or not?โ Aaron asked.
Backed into a corner, Lena sighed. โAfter work. Thanks for helping me move,โ she mumbled.
โGot it,โ Aaron replied and hung up.
Lena raised her phone like a white flag. โHappy now, Mom?โ
Carol narrowed her eyes. โYour dad and I havenโt mistreated you. Why is it so hard to get you to come home? Let me tell youโAaronโs place is temporary. The second he gets a girlfriend, youโre out.โ
โYeah, yeah,โ Lena said with a smirk. โFor now, though, itโs just easier than coming back home. Unlessโฆโ She grinned. โYou and Dad want to buy a place near the hospital?โ
With her parentsโ resources, they could afford it. But after over twenty years in their current home, surrounded by their friends and routines, moving wasnโt appealing. Plus, houses near the hospital would eat up half their savingsโand everyone knew Carolโs tight grip on her wallet.
โNice try,โ Carol said, lifting her hand like she might swat her.
Lena dodged.
After a moment of teasing, Lena sobered. โSeriously, Mom, Iโve got patients to see. You should head home.โ
โWeโre going to your uncleโs place,โ Carol said firmly. โWeโll wait for you there.โ
Lenaโs stomach sank. Awesome. Not only was her move set in stone, but now her parents were officially on watchdog duty.
