Chapter 851

The caller was Aaron. Thank God.

Lena answered. โ€œUncle Aaron, you want to help me move? Not nowโ€”Iโ€™m at work treating a very important patientโ€ฆโ€

Aaron didnโ€™t even pretend to buy it. โ€œYour momโ€™s at your office?โ€

โ€œWow, psychic much? Yeah, sheโ€™s here. Says sheโ€™s โ€˜sick everywhere.โ€™ I gave her a referral for some tests, and now Iโ€™m the heartless daughter.โ€ Lena jerked her chair back as Carol reached over to grab her phone. โ€œHey!โ€

Carol swiped it anyway. Of course, she did. Bringing it to her ear, she said, โ€œAaron.โ€

โ€œCarol, Lena said youโ€™re not feeling well?โ€ Aaronโ€™s voice was calm, smoothโ€”annoyingly unflappable.

Carol coughed lightly, throwing a sharp look Lenaโ€™s way. โ€œIโ€™m fine. She just made me mad. If she doesnโ€™t agree to move back home, Iโ€™m not leaving.โ€

โ€œActually, Lena already agreed to move in with me,โ€ Aaron replied, his tone so breezy it sounded like he wasnโ€™t lying through his teeth. โ€œMy place is close to the hospital, so her commute will be easier.โ€

Carol whipped her head around to glare at Lena, thinking, โ€˜This brat hasnโ€™t said anything about moving.โ€™

โ€œShe agreed?โ€ Carolโ€™s voice dripped with skepticism.

โ€œYeah. Iโ€™m helping her move tonight. I was even thinking we could have you and Gabriel over for dinner once sheโ€™s settled.โ€

โ€œNo need for dinner,โ€ Carol said, her irritation softening. โ€œBut yes, thatโ€™s better. At least you can keep an eye on her.โ€

โ€œAnd it wonโ€™t interrupt you and Gabrielโ€™s alone time either,โ€ Aaron teased lightly.

โ€œCheeky,โ€ Carol muttered, but she actually smiled. She glanced at Lena, then said into the phone, โ€œYou talk to her.โ€

โ€œAlright, you should head back too,โ€ Aaron said gently. โ€œHanging around her office while sheโ€™s working isnโ€™t a great look.โ€

Carol huffed. โ€œIf youโ€™d told me earlier that she agreed to move in with you, I wouldnโ€™t have made a fuss,โ€ she said, handing the phone back to Lena.

โ€œHey, Uncle Aaron.โ€

โ€œSo, are you moving or not?โ€ Aaron asked.

Backed into a corner, Lena sighed. โ€œAfter work. Thanks for helping me move,โ€ she mumbled.

โ€œGot it,โ€ Aaron replied and hung up.

Lena raised her phone like a white flag. โ€œHappy now, Mom?โ€

Carol narrowed her eyes. โ€œYour dad and I havenโ€™t mistreated you. Why is it so hard to get you to come home? Let me tell youโ€”Aaronโ€™s place is temporary. The second he gets a girlfriend, youโ€™re out.โ€

โ€œYeah, yeah,โ€ Lena said with a smirk. โ€œFor now, though, itโ€™s just easier than coming back home. Unlessโ€ฆโ€ She grinned. โ€œYou and Dad want to buy a place near the hospital?โ€

With her parentsโ€™ resources, they could afford it. But after over twenty years in their current home, surrounded by their friends and routines, moving wasnโ€™t appealing. Plus, houses near the hospital would eat up half their savingsโ€”and everyone knew Carolโ€™s tight grip on her wallet.

โ€œNice try,โ€ Carol said, lifting her hand like she might swat her.

Lena dodged.

After a moment of teasing, Lena sobered. โ€œSeriously, Mom, Iโ€™ve got patients to see. You should head home.โ€

โ€œWeโ€™re going to your uncleโ€™s place,โ€ Carol said firmly. โ€œWeโ€™ll wait for you there.โ€

Lenaโ€™s stomach sank. Awesome. Not only was her move set in stone, but now her parents were officially on watchdog duty.
