Chapter 849
Chapter 850
Lena had just finished with her last patient and was finally about to sip her water when a knock interrupted her peace.
โCome in!โ she called, expecting another patient.
The door swung open, and the moment Lena saw who it was, her stomach dropped.
โMom?!โ she blurted. โWhat are you doing here?โ
โIโm here to see a doctor!โ Carolโs tone wasnโt exactly friendly.
Lena craned her neck, glancing at the hallway behind her mom. โWhereโs Dad? Didnโt he come with you?โ
Carol scoffed. โThereโs a sign outside that says no men allowed, isnโt there?โ
Lena laughed. โThat doesnโt apply to Dad.โ
โWhat, is he not a man?โ Carol shot back.
Lenaโs smile froze. Great. Mom wasnโt just hereโshe was on a mission.
For weeks now, her parents had been nagging her to move back home. Lena hadnโt budgedโsheโd even stopped answering their calls. It looked like Carol had reached her breaking point and decided to stage a full-on ambush.
โMom,โ Lena started, trying to sound professional, โIโm at work. If you want to talk, we can do it later, okay?โ
Carol, of course, wasnโt having it. She pulled a registration slip out of her bag and slapped it onto the desk with dramatic flair. โIโm not here to chat. Iโm a patient now. Paid the fee and everything. No strings pulled, no trouble caused.โ
Lena sighed, slipping into her doctor mode. โFine. What seems to be the problem?โ
Carol leaned in, deadpan. โI donโt feel good. Anywhere.โ
โMom, Iโm an OB-GYN. If itโs not my department, Iโll have to send you somewhere else.โ Lenaโs tone screamed โplease leave.โ
โNope. Youโre my doctor.โ She punctuated her statement with a sharp slap on the desk, making Lena flinch.
This wasnโt going to end without casualties.
Lena sighed. โMom, youโre holding up the queue. Can we not do this right now? People are waiting.โ
And she wasnโt lying. In the five minutes theyโd been bickering, the waiting room had gone from calm to Starbucks-at-8-AM chaos.
โThen see me first. Problem solved,โ Carol said, all matter-of-fact, doubling down like the queen of persistence.
Lena felt the start of a headache. When her mom got stubborn, moving her was like pushing a brick wall uphill. The only person who stood a chance? Aaron.
Aaron, her momโs baby brotherโ20 years younger but somehow the only person Carol listened to.
Lena grabbed her phone and fired off a quick text:
[Uncle Aaron, SOS.]
Sheโd barely hit send when Carolโs voice snapped, โWhat are you doing on your phone? Is this how you treat patients? Put it down, or Iโll report you!โ
Ah, the joys of family.
Lena sighed, setting her phone aside and missing Aaronโs reply:
[ ? ]
โFine, letโs start with a gynecological exam,โ Lena said, typing furiously to print out an order form.
Carol snatched the paper, glaring like Lena had personally offended her. โDr. Lane, how can you order tests without asking my symptoms? Is this how you practice medicine? Over-ordering to pad your paycheck?โ
The way her mom delivered that line? Straight out of a daytime soap.
Lenaโs eyes practically rolled into the next dimension. โOh, slander now? Careful, Mom, I could sue.โ
If her mom wasnโt showing mercy, Lena sure wasnโt about to either.
โOh, go ahead and call the cops!โ Carol shot back, doubling down.
Lena leaned on her desk, rubbing her temple with her pen. She was officially done.
Then her phone started ringing.
โCan I take this call?โ Lena asked, already reaching for it. She didnโt even wait for a yes.
