Chapter 850

Lena had just finished with her last patient and was finally about to sip her water when a knock interrupted her peace.

โ€œCome in!โ€ she called, expecting another patient.

The door swung open, and the moment Lena saw who it was, her stomach dropped.

โ€œMom?!โ€ she blurted. โ€œWhat are you doing here?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m here to see a doctor!โ€ Carolโ€™s tone wasnโ€™t exactly friendly.

Lena craned her neck, glancing at the hallway behind her mom. โ€œWhereโ€™s Dad? Didnโ€™t he come with you?โ€

Carol scoffed. โ€œThereโ€™s a sign outside that says no men allowed, isnโ€™t there?โ€

Lena laughed. โ€œThat doesnโ€™t apply to Dad.โ€

โ€œWhat, is he not a man?โ€ Carol shot back.

Lenaโ€™s smile froze. Great. Mom wasnโ€™t just hereโ€”she was on a mission.

For weeks now, her parents had been nagging her to move back home. Lena hadnโ€™t budgedโ€”sheโ€™d even stopped answering their calls. It looked like Carol had reached her breaking point and decided to stage a full-on ambush.

โ€œMom,โ€ Lena started, trying to sound professional, โ€œIโ€™m at work. If you want to talk, we can do it later, okay?โ€

Carol, of course, wasnโ€™t having it. She pulled a registration slip out of her bag and slapped it onto the desk with dramatic flair. โ€œIโ€™m not here to chat. Iโ€™m a patient now. Paid the fee and everything. No strings pulled, no trouble caused.โ€

Lena sighed, slipping into her doctor mode. โ€œFine. What seems to be the problem?โ€

Carol leaned in, deadpan. โ€œI donโ€™t feel good. Anywhere.โ€

โ€œMom, Iโ€™m an OB-GYN. If itโ€™s not my department, Iโ€™ll have to send you somewhere else.โ€ Lenaโ€™s tone screamed โ€˜please leave.โ€™

โ€œNope. Youโ€™re my doctor.โ€ She punctuated her statement with a sharp slap on the desk, making Lena flinch.

This wasnโ€™t going to end without casualties.

Lena sighed. โ€œMom, youโ€™re holding up the queue. Can we not do this right now? People are waiting.โ€

And she wasnโ€™t lying. In the five minutes theyโ€™d been bickering, the waiting room had gone from calm to Starbucks-at-8-AM chaos.

โ€œThen see me first. Problem solved,โ€ Carol said, all matter-of-fact, doubling down like the queen of persistence.

Lena felt the start of a headache. When her mom got stubborn, moving her was like pushing a brick wall uphill. The only person who stood a chance? Aaron.

Aaron, her momโ€™s baby brotherโ€”20 years younger but somehow the only person Carol listened to.

Lena grabbed her phone and fired off a quick text:

[Uncle Aaron, SOS.]

Sheโ€™d barely hit send when Carolโ€™s voice snapped, โ€œWhat are you doing on your phone? Is this how you treat patients? Put it down, or Iโ€™ll report you!โ€

Ah, the joys of family.

Lena sighed, setting her phone aside and missing Aaronโ€™s reply:

[ ? ]

โ€œFine, letโ€™s start with a gynecological exam,โ€ Lena said, typing furiously to print out an order form.

Carol snatched the paper, glaring like Lena had personally offended her. โ€œDr. Lane, how can you order tests without asking my symptoms? Is this how you practice medicine? Over-ordering to pad your paycheck?โ€

The way her mom delivered that line? Straight out of a daytime soap.

Lenaโ€™s eyes practically rolled into the next dimension. โ€œOh, slander now? Careful, Mom, I could sue.โ€

If her mom wasnโ€™t showing mercy, Lena sure wasnโ€™t about to either.

โ€œOh, go ahead and call the cops!โ€ Carol shot back, doubling down.

Lena leaned on her desk, rubbing her temple with her pen. She was officially done.

Then her phone started ringing.

โ€œCan I take this call?โ€ Lena asked, already reaching for it. She didnโ€™t even wait for a yes.
