Chapter 857

โ€œI thought you werenโ€™t going to show up,โ€ Tanya said as soon as I walked in.

โ€œJust tell me what you want?โ€ I replied, studying her. Memories of her flooded back, some sharp, others faded, but one thing stood out: Tanya had completely upended my life. If not for her, maybe Jace and I would still be together. Maybe weโ€™d even have a child by now, crawling around our home.

โ€œHave you been to Desmondโ€™s parentsโ€™ house recently? Seen the child?โ€ she asked, catching me off guard.

The child. A pawn in her games. She hadnโ€™t even looked back after giving birth, hadnโ€™t visited once in over a year. Now she wanted to know about him?

โ€œI have. The boy is doing well,โ€ I said.

She nodded and smiled faintly. โ€œSee? Heโ€™s fine without a mother.โ€

โ€œStop dressing up your negligence,โ€ I snapped. โ€œWhatโ€™s your point? Donโ€™t tell me you suddenly want to claim that boy now.โ€

Tanya let out a hollow laugh. โ€œIโ€™m not that delusional. If he saw me, heโ€™d probably cry.โ€

โ€œAt least you know,โ€ I said coldly. โ€œThat boy doesnโ€™t need you, Tanya. Heโ€™s better off without a mother like you.โ€

The words were harsh, but they werenโ€™t wrong. With all the heinous crimes Tanya had committed, it was better for the child to grow up without knowing her.

โ€œWith Desmondโ€™s parents in their condition, I doubt the child will live all that well,โ€ Tanya said quietly, her gaze fixed on the table.

She wasnโ€™t wrong. Desmondโ€™s parents were old and worn down, their grief weighing heavy. Raising the boy had drained their savings, and the nanny theyโ€™d hired was barely keeping things afloat. If theyโ€™d been wealthy, Tanya wouldnโ€™t have cheated on Desmondโ€”a selfish choice that had ultimately led to his tragic end.

โ€œWhether they live well or not is no longer your concern,โ€ I said sharply. Tanyaโ€™s crimes ensured sheโ€™d either face the death penalty or spend the rest of her life behind bars.

Tanya stayed quiet for a beat, then leaned forward. โ€œDesmond had a stock account. Thereโ€™s money in it. Transfer the funds to the child.โ€

I froze, startled. Stocks? Jace had never mentioned Desmond having any investments. I locked eyes with her, and realization hit. The money wasnโ€™t Desmondโ€™sโ€”it was hers, hidden under his name.

โ€œThat money wonโ€™t raise any comfortable life.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s clean,โ€ she murmured. โ€œEnough to give him aโ€ฆโ€

Her sudden desire to leave something behind feltโ€ฆstrange. Sheโ€™d ignored this child for so long, yet now, she wanted to make things right. I was surprised, unsure how to respond. Was this one of those โ€œeven the worst moms have a soft spot for their kidsโ€ moments?

โ€œKeira, I know you donโ€™t like me. You probably hate me. But at least do this for Desmond.โ€ She was stripped of her usual arrogance.

โ€œThereโ€™s no way that moneyโ€™s clean,โ€ I said flatly.

Her face hardened. โ€œThis is the only thing Iโ€™ve ever done for my child. Are you really going to take that away?โ€

โ€œYour past is dirty, Tanya. Do you really want it staining his future too?โ€

She flinched but said nothing.

I continued. โ€œYour intentions here are good, and Iโ€™ll make sure the child gets what he needs. But Iโ€™ll replace every cent in that account with my own money. That way, nothing from your past will touch him.โ€

Shock flickered in her eyes before it vanished behind a bitter laugh. โ€œSo money fixes everything, huh?โ€

Her obsession with wealth had ruined her. Sheโ€™d destroyed Desmond, herself, and the life they might have hadโ€”all for a dream that slipped through her fingers. And now, even this small act of redemption would come from someone she despised.

Tanya said nothing more. She didnโ€™t thank me or argue. She just stood abruptly, as if the conversation was over.

But before she could leave, I spoke up. โ€œWait. I have something else to ask you.โ€
