Chapter 858

I stayed quiet after leaving the prison. Hayden didnโ€™t push me; he could tell I wasnโ€™t in the mood. When the car stopped, he pulled me into one of those warm, Hayden-style hugs, his hand stroking my hair. โ€œIf somethingโ€™s eating at you, just say it. Keeping it in will mess you up.โ€

โ€œHow can someoneโ€™s life be trashed so easily? Tanyaโ€ฆ she deserves to die!โ€ I mumbled into his shoulder, my voice shaking. Sheโ€™d destroyed so many lives. For what? Money? Power? She even killed her own husband to climb the social ladder. And then she used girls who trusted her, selling them out for more cash. The girl Demi mentionedโ€”the one who went to Tanya for helpโ€”was assaulted by someone Tanya set her up with. After that, she couldnโ€™t take it anymore and ended her own life. I couldnโ€™t even figure out how to tell Demi.

โ€œSheโ€™ll get whatโ€™s coming to her. Karma always hits back,โ€ Hayden murmured against my ear. But what difference does it make? Lives donโ€™t come back. Like my parents. Even though the people who caused their deaths paid for it, it didnโ€™t bring them back. Theyโ€™re still gone, buried forever.

Hayden didnโ€™t take me home after the prison. Instead, we ended up at a yacht. I blinked at him. โ€œWhatโ€™s this?โ€ โ€œFishing.โ€ I almost said, Seriously?, but he looked so hopeful, I couldnโ€™t. He was trying, and I didnโ€™t want to ruin it. โ€œWhereโ€™d you even get a yacht?โ€ I asked instead.

โ€œRented it.โ€ I snorted. โ€œYouโ€™re not the Hart family heir anymore. Renting this mustโ€™ve drained, like, three months of your paycheck.โ€ I was teasing, of course. Even without the family name, Hayden had his own businesses to keep him afloat. โ€œGood thing Iโ€™ve got you, sugar mama.โ€ Wow. He really just said that. Like freeloading was some kind of flex.

It reminded me of a video I saw the other dayโ€”a guy who refused to work, mooched off his wife, and spent his days doing nothing. When people called him out, he blamed her for starting rumors.

โ€œDonโ€™t even joke about that. Iโ€™m not funding your yacht addiction,โ€ I said. Sure, I grew up with money, but wasting it wasnโ€™t my thingโ€”thanks to my parents. They taught me to appreciate what I had, and Matthew and Lindey drilled in the same lessons. Later on. Maybe it was lifeโ€™s way of keeping me grounded after taking so much away.

โ€œNoted, Iโ€™ll behave. But since weโ€™re here, letโ€™s have fun, yeah?โ€ Before I could argue, he scooped me up bridal-style. โ€œHayden!โ€ I yelped, clutching his neck. โ€œWhat are you doing?โ€ โ€œCarrying you onboard. Gotta test if Iโ€™ve still got it,โ€ he said, smirking as he climbed the stairs with me in his arms. I knew what he meantโ€”he wasnโ€™t just carrying me anymore. It was me and the baby.

โ€œWait, have I gained weight?โ€ Itโ€™s a question no woman can resist asking. His smirk grew. โ€œA little.โ€ โ€œPut me down!โ€ I swatted his chest. โ€œWhy?โ€ His eyes sparkled with mischief. That smileโ€”it was the kind that made everything feel lighter, like the world wasnโ€™t such a mess for once.

โ€œHayden,โ€ I said, unable to look away. โ€œYouโ€™re really hot when you smile.โ€ His grin didnโ€™t fade as he carried me to the deck, setting me gently on the railing. I grabbed his neck, panic bubbling up. โ€œIโ€™m scared,โ€ I admitted. โ€œRelax,โ€ he said softly, his arm around my waist. โ€œWith me, you donโ€™t have to be.โ€ Then he leaned in, and I tilted my head to meet him, our lips crashing together in a deep kiss.
