Chapter 911
โHowโs your injury? Are you alright?โ Lena asked James.
โIโm fineโฆ well, nothing serious,โ James said, rubbing his head. He hadnโt thought much of it initially, but now, with the bandages wrapped around his head, he suddenly felt his injury was far worse. Even his head started to feel a bit dizzy.
โMake sure to rest. Iโm going to see my little uncle. Which room is he in?โ Lena asked.
โHeโs over there. Iโll take you,โ James offered enthusiastically.
โNo need. You should rest,โ Lena said, sparing him the trouble.
Just then, Jamesโs phone rang. Holding his head, he answered and walked ahead, leaving Lena to her thoughts. Watching him walk away, she felt a heavy weight in her chest. If James, sitting in the backseat, ended up like this, Aaron, who had been driving, must be in much worse shape.
With a deep breath, she made her way to Aaronโs hospital room. She had just taken a few steps when the treatment room door opened behind her, and two nurses walked out chatting.
โItโs so funny. What kind of person insists on bandages when theyโre not even hurt?โ one nurse said with a chuckle.
โDidnโt you hear? He did it on purpose to make his girlfriend feel sorry for him,โ the other replied.
โSee? Men are all liars. Never trust them.โ
Lena frowned, overhearing their conversation. Were they talking about James? Was he not actually injured? Given Jamesโs over-the-top personality, it wasnโt hard to believe. Shaking her head lightly, she continued toward Aaronโs room.
Pushing open the door, Lena saw Aaron. His left arm was suspended in a sling, his hand supported by a brace.
Aaron looked up at her. โWhat are you doing here?โ
Instead of answering, Lena walked straight to his bedside. โAaron Ace, if you have a death wish, donโt drag others down with you.โ
She didnโt call him โUncleโ but used his full nameโa clear sign she was angry.
โIt was my fault. I know,โ Aaron admitted readily, his attitude surprisingly humble.
Chapter 911
โYouโre not an impulsive or reckless person. Why would you, of all people, drink and drive last night?โ Lena asked. The question had been running through her mind since she heard the news.
Last night, they had been perfectly fine, sharing a meal without any sign of trouble. Knowing him, he wasnโt the kind to do something so foolish. Something must have happened to push him to this.
Though her words came out as scolding, her concern was evident.
Aaron lowered his gaze, unable to meet her clear, bright eyes. โI saw Jamesโs new car and wanted to take it for a spin. Forgot Iโd been drinking.โ
โItโs my fault. It wonโt happen again,โ Aaron said, his tone earnest as he apologized and made a promise.
Lena wanted to say more, but the sound of hurried footsteps and the door opening interrupted her. Without looking, she could tell it was her mother.
โAaron! Are you alright?โ Mrs. Lane rushed in, visibly worried and flustered.
In Lenaโs memory, her mother had always been more concerned about Aaron than her own daughter. There was even a time when Lena, as a child, had wondered if she wasnโt Mrs. Laneโs biological child and that Aaron was instead. The thought had earned her a scolding and a good spanking from her mother.
โBig Sis, Iโm fine. Just hurt my arm a little. Iโll recover with some rest,โ Aaron said, his eyes briefly flicking to Lena, who seemed distracted.
โJust your arm? Did you get a full check-up? What about your head or anywhere else?โ Mrs. Lane scanned him from head to toe, her worry written all over her face.
โItโs all been checked. Iโm fine,โ Aaron reassured her.
Despite his words, Mrs. Lane didnโt seem convinced. She turned to Lena. โLena, is he telling the truth?โ
Lena didnโt know if he was lying, but she had already confirmed his condition with the doctor. She nodded. โHeโs fine. Donโt make such a big deal out of it.โ
โI was scared to death,โ Mrs. Lane sighed in relief before turning to Aaron. โYou shouldnโt go back to work in this state. Come stay at my place for a while. Iโll take care of you.โ
โNo need, Sis. Iโโ Aaron began, but Mrs. Lane cut him off, turning to Lena instead. โAnd you, youโre coming back home to stay as well.โ
