Chapter 912

Going back to her familyโ€™s home was out of the question. Lena would rather move her luggage back to Aaronโ€™s place and stay with him. Though Mrs. Lane could pressure her, she couldnโ€™t do the same with Aaron. In the end, she had no choice but to relent, though her frustration was evident. Grinding her teeth, she snapped, โ€œYouโ€™re both so stubborn!โ€

As she left the room, Mrs. Lane gave Lena a pointed glare, clearly displeased that she hadnโ€™t sided with her or tried to convince Aaron otherwise.

โ€œLena,โ€ Mrs. Lane said sternly, โ€œfrom today until your little uncle fully recovers, youโ€™re responsible for taking care of him. This includes changing his bandages, accompanying him to check-ups, and handling all of his daily needsโ€”everything from meals to mobility.โ€

Mrs. Laneโ€™s commanding tone reminded Lena of why sheโ€™d often likened her mother to a tyrant. At least to her, Mrs. Lane had always been domineering and overbearing. Lena had clashed with her mother many times over the years, particularly during her rebellious teenage phase. Their fights were so intense that, at her lowest point, Lena had almost done something drastic just to make Mrs. Lane regret it. It was Aaron who had pulled her back from the brinkโ€”he had saved her life, literally.

โ€œAlright, I get it, Ms. Ace,โ€ Lena replied with exaggerated obedience, her tone dripping with sarcasm. โ€œI promise to give my utmost care and attention to my esteemed uncle, twenty-four-seven.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t give me that attitude,โ€ Mrs. Lane scolded. โ€œIf anything happens to him again, how will your conscience handle it?โ€

From her words, one might think Aaronโ€™s injury had been Lenaโ€™s fault. Knowing there was no reasoning with her mother, Lena simply nodded and remained silent. Even so, as Mrs. Lane left, she made sure to issue one last warning: โ€œDonโ€™t think you can slack off. Iโ€™ll be making surprise visits to check on you.โ€

After seeing her mother out, Lena slumped against the door, staring at the ceiling. The sheer exhaustion made her feel like she was suffocating. She began to wonder once again if she was truly her motherโ€™s biological child. Maybe I should get some of her hair and do a DNA test someday.

โ€œWhat are you thinking about?โ€ Aaron asked, walking over.

His arm was injured, but his legs were perfectly fine. Lena couldnโ€™t help but feel grateful that his injury wasnโ€™t worse. If he couldnโ€™t walk, sheโ€™d have to take care of him around the clock.

โ€œIโ€™m wondering if I should get a DNA test with your sister. Iโ€™m starting to think Iโ€™m not her biological child,โ€ Lena said. Then she paused before adding silently in her heart, If anyone needs a test, itโ€™s probably you and Mrs. Lane. The way she dotes on you, itโ€™s like sheโ€™s caring for a son, not a younger brother.

The thought made her chuckle internally.

โ€œWhat nonsense are you thinking?โ€ Aaron asked, trying to comfort her. โ€œYour mom has always been like this. She just cares about me a bit too much.โ€

Lena let out a scoff. โ€œSure, because in her eyes, Iโ€™m nothing compared to you.โ€

Her self-deprecating tone made Aaron feel a pang of guilt. He knew her frustration stemmed from how much Mrs. Lane doted on him.

โ€œIโ€™m thirsty. Can you get me a glass of water?โ€ Aaron said, attempting to change the subject.

Lena nodded and went to fetch water for him. As she handed it over, she realized he hadnโ€™t eaten anything. She decided to cook some noodles for him. Though the result wasnโ€™t as refined as the meal Aaron had prepared for her the night before, it was still edible. โ€œIโ€™m not much of a cook, so youโ€™ll have to make do with this.โ€

โ€œAs long as thereโ€™s food, Iโ€™m happy. Besides, itโ€™s not bad,โ€ Aaron replied, his words making Lena laugh.

What kind of compliment is that?

โ€œYou should go upstairs and rest for a while. Thereโ€™s nothing to worry about here,โ€ Aaron said casually. Heโ€™d gone upstairs earlier and noticed that all of Lenaโ€™s belongings had been taken back to her familyโ€™s home.

Lena sighed. Resting upstairs wasnโ€™t an optionโ€”her things were no longer there. She hesitated, then made a call to Keira.

โ€œCan you do me a favor?โ€ Lena asked over the phone. โ€œGo to my place and bring the suitcase near the living room to Aaronโ€™s place.โ€

โ€œWhatโ€™s going on?โ€ Keira asked, intrigued.

Lena explained the situation and sighed. โ€œI left secretly last night, so I canโ€™t just go and grab it myself. When you bring it over, just say I had left it at your place before.โ€

She even had a cover story ready.

โ€œAlright,โ€ Keira replied, amused. โ€œYou know, fate seems determined to tie you and Aaron together.โ€

โ€œShut up,โ€ Lena muttered, her tone half-annoyed, half-embarrassed.
