Chapter 912
Going back to her familyโs home was out of the question. Lena would rather move her luggage back to Aaronโs place and stay with him. Though Mrs. Lane could pressure her, she couldnโt do the same with Aaron. In the end, she had no choice but to relent, though her frustration was evident. Grinding her teeth, she snapped, โYouโre both so stubborn!โ
As she left the room, Mrs. Lane gave Lena a pointed glare, clearly displeased that she hadnโt sided with her or tried to convince Aaron otherwise.
โLena,โ Mrs. Lane said sternly, โfrom today until your little uncle fully recovers, youโre responsible for taking care of him. This includes changing his bandages, accompanying him to check-ups, and handling all of his daily needsโeverything from meals to mobility.โ
Mrs. Laneโs commanding tone reminded Lena of why sheโd often likened her mother to a tyrant. At least to her, Mrs. Lane had always been domineering and overbearing. Lena had clashed with her mother many times over the years, particularly during her rebellious teenage phase. Their fights were so intense that, at her lowest point, Lena had almost done something drastic just to make Mrs. Lane regret it. It was Aaron who had pulled her back from the brinkโhe had saved her life, literally.
โAlright, I get it, Ms. Ace,โ Lena replied with exaggerated obedience, her tone dripping with sarcasm. โI promise to give my utmost care and attention to my esteemed uncle, twenty-four-seven.โ
โDonโt give me that attitude,โ Mrs. Lane scolded. โIf anything happens to him again, how will your conscience handle it?โ
From her words, one might think Aaronโs injury had been Lenaโs fault. Knowing there was no reasoning with her mother, Lena simply nodded and remained silent. Even so, as Mrs. Lane left, she made sure to issue one last warning: โDonโt think you can slack off. Iโll be making surprise visits to check on you.โ
After seeing her mother out, Lena slumped against the door, staring at the ceiling. The sheer exhaustion made her feel like she was suffocating. She began to wonder once again if she was truly her motherโs biological child. Maybe I should get some of her hair and do a DNA test someday.
โWhat are you thinking about?โ Aaron asked, walking over.
His arm was injured, but his legs were perfectly fine. Lena couldnโt help but feel grateful that his injury wasnโt worse. If he couldnโt walk, sheโd have to take care of him around the clock.
โIโm wondering if I should get a DNA test with your sister. Iโm starting to think Iโm not her biological child,โ Lena said. Then she paused before adding silently in her heart, If anyone needs a test, itโs probably you and Mrs. Lane. The way she dotes on you, itโs like sheโs caring for a son, not a younger brother.
The thought made her chuckle internally.
โWhat nonsense are you thinking?โ Aaron asked, trying to comfort her. โYour mom has always been like this. She just cares about me a bit too much.โ
Lena let out a scoff. โSure, because in her eyes, Iโm nothing compared to you.โ
Her self-deprecating tone made Aaron feel a pang of guilt. He knew her frustration stemmed from how much Mrs. Lane doted on him.
โIโm thirsty. Can you get me a glass of water?โ Aaron said, attempting to change the subject.
Lena nodded and went to fetch water for him. As she handed it over, she realized he hadnโt eaten anything. She decided to cook some noodles for him. Though the result wasnโt as refined as the meal Aaron had prepared for her the night before, it was still edible. โIโm not much of a cook, so youโll have to make do with this.โ
โAs long as thereโs food, Iโm happy. Besides, itโs not bad,โ Aaron replied, his words making Lena laugh.
What kind of compliment is that?
โYou should go upstairs and rest for a while. Thereโs nothing to worry about here,โ Aaron said casually. Heโd gone upstairs earlier and noticed that all of Lenaโs belongings had been taken back to her familyโs home.
Lena sighed. Resting upstairs wasnโt an optionโher things were no longer there. She hesitated, then made a call to Keira.
โCan you do me a favor?โ Lena asked over the phone. โGo to my place and bring the suitcase near the living room to Aaronโs place.โ
โWhatโs going on?โ Keira asked, intrigued.
Lena explained the situation and sighed. โI left secretly last night, so I canโt just go and grab it myself. When you bring it over, just say I had left it at your place before.โ
She even had a cover story ready.
โAlright,โ Keira replied, amused. โYou know, fate seems determined to tie you and Aaron together.โ
โShut up,โ Lena muttered, her tone half-annoyed, half-embarrassed.
