Chapter 950
Lenaโs scalp tingled, and she didnโt dare look her mother in the eye.
โDonโt act like a quail. Lift your head and look at me when you speak,โ Briana, her mother, was very perceptive. She could read Lenaโs small gestures clearly.
Lena still didnโt lift her head. She just replied, โI donโt know. Donโt ask me.โ
Briana walked over and grabbed her hand as she tried to pack up her things. โStop fooling me.โ
โMom, this is a personal matter. Itโs between me and my uncle. If you ask me about his business, how would Iโฆ Itโฆโ Lena said in frustration.
Briana was taken aback by her harsh response. After a few moments of silence, she said, โI suppose thatโs true.โ
Lena secretly breathed a sigh of relief. She knew that with Brianaโs persistent nature, sheโd probably go find Aaron. If he revealed anything, sheโd be in trouble again. She quickly tried to calm her mother down.
โMom, no matter how much you care about your brother, you canโt ask about everything. Even your own son has his privacy, right? As for who he likes, when he brings that person to you, youโll know.โ
โIโm not asking about who he likes. I want to know whatโs so special about thisโฆ sheโs trying to make him cut ties with the Ace family. Does she have some sort of deep grudge with the Ace family?โ Briana said angrily.
โNo grudge,โ Lena murmured.
โNo grudge? Why would your uncle act like that? Do you realize how much this hurts your grandparents?โ Briana looked even more worn out.
โIt wasnโt a request; it was something he wanted to do on his own. Donโt jump to conclusions without knowing the facts,โ Lena said, genuinely feeling wronged. She had never had improper thoughts about Aaron, nor had she encouraged him to reconnect with his relatives. Now, she was being unfairly blamed for something she didnโt even do. She was truly innocent.
After she spoke, she noticed Brianaโs gaze had changed, staring at her in a way that made her skin crawl. โMomโฆโ Lena started.
โYou still say you donโt know?โ Briana interrupted her.
Lena felt utterly powerless. She realized that the best course of action was to leave as quickly as possible. If they kept talking, she might end up digging herself into a deeper hole. She shoved her things into her suitcase. โMom, I need to catch my high-speed train. Iโm leaving.โ
โStop right there. You need to explain yourself,โ Briana grabbed her arm.
โI donโt have anything to explain. Go ask Aaron,โ she said, tossing the problem back to him. Whatever Aaron said was on him. She knew in her heart that she was innocent. If he decided to reveal something, she could always get a man to back up her story. Her immediate priority now was to find Ron and ask him to pretend to be her boyfriend.
Lena quickly escaped. The moment she drove away from Aaronโs place, she exhaled in relief, stepping on the gas and heading toward her home. But halfway there, she realized it wasnโt a good idea. If she returned to her own place or stayed at the hospital dormitory, both Aaron and her mother would probably show up at her door. She needed to avoid them for now, so she decided to find somewhere else to stay. But where? As she was thinking about whether she should call me to stay at my small courtyard, she received a friend request that had been sent an hour ago.
โ[Hello, Dr. Lane!]โ Ron sent a message first.
Looking at the smiley face emoji he had added, her tense nerves eased a little. She quickly replied: โ[Can we meet?]โ
Her request seemed sudden and a bit playful, but she knew she needed to meet Ron, explain things clearly, and make sure he didnโt misunderstand. She also needed to convince him to help her with this.
