Chapter 216

After the examination, the obstetrician hesitated, looking at Sienna with a grave expression. “Mrs. Flynn, I’m so sorry…”

A chill enveloped Sienna; Josiah, separated only by a curtain, felt it too. A dreadful thought seized them both—their child was gone. They hadn't saved it.

Ignoring hospital regulations, Josiah flung aside the curtain and rushed in.

“Mr. Flynn, you cannot enter!”

“Get out of my way!” No one could stop him.

“Sienna!” Josiah embraced her. His gaze, blazing with anger, fixed on the obstetrician. “How dare you call yourself a doctor? What kind of words do you utter to a pregnant woman? If my wife can’t handle this, how will you compensate?” He softened, holding Sienna close. “It’s alright. We’re young. We’ll have more children.” But his eyes glistened with unshed tears.

Sienna saw this, hardly believing it. Could the loss weigh so heavily on Josiah, too?

“Ugh…” Sienna winced, pressing her hand to her abdomen; the lower abdominal pain intensified.

Josiah’s fury erupted. “What are you all standing around for? If you couldn’t save my child, at least care for my wife!”

The medical staff exchanged glances, their gaze settling on the obstetrician.

Startled, she explained, “Mr. Flynn, please calm down—your wife isn’t actually pregnant…”

Josiah, initially confused, paused, then his eyes widened in disbelief as he looked between the doctor and Sienna.

Sienna’s reaction was more dramatic; she struggled to sit up. “That’s impossible!” She hadn’t menstruated, and she’d taken a pregnancy test.

Josiah supported her, urging her to lean on him while questioning the doctor. “Have you conducted a thorough examination? My wife wouldn’t lie about this.”

The doctor, visibly flustered, remained composed. False pregnancies weren’t unheard of. She turned to Sienna. “Mrs. Flynn, how did you determine you were pregnant?”

Sienna recounted her situation, her heart heavy. “Could the pregnancy test have been inaccurate?”

“It’s possible,” the doctor admitted. “While unlikely, it can’t be ruled out. Ovulation stimulation medication might have sent misleading signals…”

Sienna stopped listening, clutching the sheet. She had indeed used ovulation stimulants, hoping for a quick conception. She never imagined this outcome.

The doctor continued, “A blood test is the most accurate method, Mrs. Flynn.”

Sienna closed her eyes, deflated, resting against Josiah. Despite the comical error, Josiah was relieved.

Looking down at her, he asked, “Is your shoulder still painful? Should we see an orthopedist?”

“Mm.” Sienna nodded weakly.

The obstetrician left; an orthopedist arrived. Her shoulder was dislocated; he quickly reset it.

With her shoulder bandaged, he advised, “Mrs. Flynn, it’s not serious. Avoid strenuous activity and watch your diet for the next week.”

Both doctors prescribed medication and explained the dosage before releasing them. An assistant handled the discharge; Josiah carried Sienna to the car.

Sienna kept her eyes closed throughout, unsure how to face Josiah after this unexpected turn. She’d believed their reconciliation hinged on the child.

Even with her promise to return for Rosie's sake, this situation was vastly different. The revelation of her not being pregnant meant their complicated relationship would continue.

Mentally and physically unprepared, she felt overwhelmed.

Josiah, misinterpreting her silence as embarrassment, gently touched her cheek. “Sienna, I’m overjoyed.”

Sienna’s eyes snapped open. Why was he so delighted? His joy was evident in his eyes and brow—he wasn't lying.

His fingers caressed her hair, his gaze warm and intense. “Though the pregnancy was a misunderstanding, for you, it was real. You intended to carry my child, didn't you?”

Sienna hesitated. He didn't need an answer; the truth was clear.

Josiah embraced her. “Sienna, thank you, thank you.” Pregnancy is arduous; there are risks, and childbirth is perilous. Postpartum challenges abound. He whispered, “I can’t believe you’d endure all this for me, for our child.”

Her intentions were genuine, even if the pregnancy wasn’t. He kissed her cheek. “Sienna, thank you. I’ll take care of you; I won’t let you down.”

His words stunned her more than the false pregnancy. Were they sincere? She no longer worried about betrayal; love wasn’t paramount. She needed to know if he genuinely accepted their child.

He didn't need to love her; he only needed to love their child. Could she trust him?

The assistant returned with the medication. Josiah asked, “Should we go back to Silver Beach? You’ll need care. Living with someone who has a child can be risky…”

Fate had played a cruel trick. She was entangled with Josiah.

“Mm.” Sienna nodded.

That night, Hervey brought good news to Howard. “We found the kid!”
