Chapter 280
It was Howard’s car. Josiah took Sienna’s hand and stepped forward as the car door swung open, revealing Howard inside.
“Howard.”
“Mm,” Howard glanced at Sienna. His voice was gentle. “Sienna, may I borrow Josiah for a moment? I have a few things to discuss with him.”
“Sure!” Sienna smiled.
Josiah released her hand, ruffling her hair. “Wait for me in the—”
“Okay.” Sienna walked to the Bentley while Josiah climbed into Howard’s Cayenne. The atmosphere inside felt tense.
“The person who harmed you today,” Howard began, “is from the Evans family.”
“The Evans family?” Josiah exclaimed, incredulous. “How could it be the Evans family?”
They exchanged glances. Howard voiced their shared concern: “I fear someone from the Evans family has begun to doubt you.”
Josiah pressed his forehead, a headache brewing. After the incident, they had suspected the Flynn family’s enemies, but never the Evans family.
“Howard, what do you think the Evans family knows?”
“Uncertain,” Howard shook his head. “They may be suspicious but haven’t confirmed anything yet.”
Josiah scoffed. “Suspicious enough to act so ruthlessly?”
The man had attacked with lethal intent. If not for Chester and Josiah’s combat skills, he might have suffered a terrible fate.
Howard said softly, “The descendants of the Evans family have always been like this since Andy: incapable, resorting to petty, despicable acts.”
Josiah remembered something, his expression shifting. Understanding his brother’s thoughts, Howard reassuringly rested his hand on Josiah’s shoulder. “Don’t worry, Andy should know nothing about this.”
“Given the situation with the Evans family, if Andy were to find out, his family wouldn’t have sent that man after you today.”
“What do you mean?” Josiah was puzzled.
Howard hesitated, feeling it best not to overshare. Josiah had already endured enough. He waved his hand. “Now that we know it’s the Evans family, be careful.”
“Okay.”
“Go. Sienna is waiting for you.”
“Alright.” Josiah reached for the car door when Howard called him back. Josiah turned, a brief look of doubt and helplessness on his face, which Howard noticed.
With a steady gaze, Howard’s tone softened. “Josiah, no matter what happens, I will be here.”
Feeling a surge of emotion, Josiah forced a smile. “I know, Howard.”
Howard waved him off and closed the door. The Cayenne pulled away and stopped in front of the Bentley. Josiah returned to find Sienna asleep against the seat.
He gently lifted her into his arms, and she remained undisturbed. Josiah gazed down at her peaceful face.
He thought, Sienna’s attitude has suddenly changed. Is it worry about my injuries? Genuine affection? Or has accepting her pregnancy changed her? No matter the reason, Josiah felt grateful she was still by his side. “Sienna,” he whispered, “stay with me; don’t leave me.”
When they arrived at Silver Beach, Josiah was considering how to carry Sienna down when she stirred awake. “We’re here? Why didn’t you wake me?”
Josiah chuckled. “You woke up just in time; my arm is a bit inconvenient, so let me take your hand.” He extended his hand, and they walked inside together.
Once inside, Sienna inhaled deeply. “It smells wonderful! Romilly, what soup are you making?”
“Ms. Shaw, it’s oxtail soup.”
Sienna pulled Josiah to sit down. “Eat this, it will help replenish your strength.”
“Sure.” Josiah smiled.
During dinner, Sienna turned to him seriously. “Could you not let James follow me anymore?”
Josiah raised an eyebrow, silent. “He should follow you instead,” Sienna said, glancing at his arm. “If James had been there today, you wouldn’t have been—”
“Are you worried about me?” Josiah took her hand gently.
Sienna pursed her lips and nodded. “Getting slashed is quite frightening.”
“Don’t worry,” Josiah said, pulling her onto his lap, his palm resting against her abdomen. “For you and the baby, I assure you, I will be safe.”
Sienna sensed Josiah’s underlying trouble. While she wanted distance, he was her children’s father, and even if they parted ways, she wished him well.
She asked, “What did Howard tell you? Who attacked you?”
“A madman,” Josiah held her close, spooning soup to her lips. “Just a case of class envy. Chester caught him and sent him to the police. Don’t worry.”
Sienna genuinely sighed in relief. “Let James follow you; I don’t need a bodyguard. That way, I’ll feel more at ease.” She wrapped her arms around his neck. “My life is quite simple; just drop me off at my workplace and pick me up. How about that?”
Unable to resist her charm, he agreed. “Okay,” Josiah fed her a piece of meat. “But you must not meet Cedric again.”
Sienna cupped his face. “Listen carefully; I have only seen Cedric that one time, believe it or not.”
“I believe!” Josiah’s expression changed as he grasped her hand. “Whatever you say, I believe!” He recalled something, narrowing his eyes. “So, when you were talking nonsense before, were you just trying to provoke me!”
Sienna pouted, turning away. “You yelled at me the moment you arrived.”
“I admit my mistake, but given your wild words, of course, I reacted that way.”
Sienna lowered her head against his shoulder. Josiah took it as an apology. “It’s alright; it’s all in the past now. Let’s not bring it up again.”
“Mm,” Sienna replied softly. Josiah felt fortunate. After all the turmoil, Sienna was still his. He believed they were destined for a lasting love.
That night, while Josiah showered, Sienna called Hannah. Hannah exclaimed, “Asset transfer?”
Sienna replied, “Yes. I don’t know any lawyers, so I’ll trouble you again.”
