Chapter 292

“Howard?” Roxie looked up as she heard the home helper. Their eyes met, and Howard quickly averted his gaze, hastening his steps.

Daniel saw what was happening and felt a surge of anger. He raised his hand, striking Roxie hard and shouting, “Are you flirting with a man right in front of me? How dare you!”

Before he could finish, a scream escaped him as he doubled over, clutching his stomach. Howard’s kick had landed squarely in his gut. Howard pulled Roxie behind him, protecting her.

Daniel glared at Howard, his face contorted with rage. “Who are you?”

Howard had been absent for many years. Back when the Flynn family held power, Daniel was just a child. Daniel scoffed. “So, you’re the one keeping her? What terrible taste you have! Why would you keep such a… hitch?”

Before he could finish his insults, Howard kicked him again—harder this time—sending Daniel crashing into the wall. Watching Daniel writhe in pain gave Howard a grim satisfaction.

Bobby’s mother was being insulted, which meant he was too. Howard took Roxie’s hand and led her away. “Don’t you dare leave!” Daniel scrambled to his feet, shouting. “I’m her husband! You can’t take her away!”

He tried to follow, but Hervey’s men restrained him, preventing his escape. Inside the car, Roxie slowly calmed down and said, “Howard, thank you.”

Once again, he had saved her. But this time, he remained silent, offering no comforting sound. Roxie bit her lip, unsure whether to speak. She sensed Howard’s anger and wondered if he saw her as a burden.

She had to admit she had caused him considerable trouble. But most of the chaos she had brought upon him was unintentional, like her confusion over his sudden appearance.

As Roxie reflected, Howard was indeed angry—but not at her; his anger was directed at himself. Since the day Daniel had taken Roxie away, Howard had been agonizing over her presence at City Pearl.

He had been searching for a suitable way to remove her. Today, he had come to take her away. Unfortunately, he had arrived a little too late; Roxie had nearly been put at risk again.

Howard remained quiet, the air in the car thick with tension. Roxie clenched her fists, feeling uneasy until she finally asked, “Howard, may I ask where we are going?”

Howard remained silent, merely glancing at Hervey in the front seat. Hervey told Roxie, “It’s no longer safe for you at City Pearl. Daniel might come after you again.”

As they drove, Howard struggled to find a way to persuade Roxie. But Daniel’s actions had inadvertently simplified matters. Roxie knew it was unsafe, but she had nowhere else to go.

“Ms. Miller,” Hervey continued, “the Flynn family owns a nursing home where you can stay for a while. Given your vision problems, it has doctors, nurses, and caregivers who can assist you.”

That did sound appealing. But a nursing home couldn't be cheap. Roxie hesitated. “I don’t have much money.”

She had worked hard over the years and enjoyed a decent life, but affording an expensive nursing home was beyond her means.

“There’s no need to worry about that,” Hervey replied, glancing at Howard. “What Howard means is that, for now, your stay will be… covered.”

They had no intention of charging her, but Hervey feared Roxie would refuse outright if he stated that upfront. Roxie frowned, feeling torn. She couldn’t bring herself to accept such kindness.

Seeing her distress, Hervey added, “Just say yes, Ms. Miller. Do you have a better option?”

Roxie knew deep down that she did not. “Thank you for all your help, but…”

Howard shot a look at Hervey, who immediately understood. “Ms. Miller, Howard is quite busy; we can’t waste any more time.”

Roxie’s eyes widened in panic, cold sweat forming on her forehead. She said quickly, “I’ll move.”

Finally, Howard replied, “Hmm.”

Roxie pondered. Did he just speak? Was he pleased, or upset?

A little while later, the car arrived at the nursing home. To ensure Roxie’s comfort, Howard opted against a private villa. Instead, she was placed in an independent apartment with access to a shared courtyard.

“Ms. Miller,” Hervey helped her settle in and assigned her a caregiver. “If you need anything, just ask your caregiver. Is there anything else I’ve missed?”

“None at all.” Roxie quickly waved her hands. “You are so generous. Thank you so much, and thank you, Howard.”

“Relax here,” Hervey said with a smile. “Once the hospital schedules your surgery, we will come to pick you up.”

“Thanks, Hervey. Please take care,” Rosie said thoughtfully. “Howard, please take care.”

Howard lingered at the door, responding distantly, “Hmm.”

After leaving the nursing home, Howard went to the television station to wait for Yvette’s recording to finish.

“What brings you here?” Yvette walked out, her expression cold. She had been acting this way toward him lately.

“Yvette,” Howard took her hand gently, his voice calming. “I’m here to take you to Lucky Dining. I’ve already ordered; it’s all your favorites; we can eat as soon as we arrive!”

Yvette looked unimpressed, sneering. “Cut the niceties! Do you think I’m a child? Just a meal won’t cut it.”

Howard frowned. “What do you want me to do?”

“Are you just going to agree to everything I say?” Yvette asked, looking at him challengingly.

“Yes,” Howard nodded. “As long as I can…”

Suddenly, Yvette smiled, her earlier coldness melting away. “Of course you can. Howard…” Leaning against him, she looked up with warmth. “Tonight, I want you to come to my place, alright?”

Howard was taken aback. Yvette seemed to sense his uncertainty. “Howard,” she said, “I want you to get me pregnant!”

What an unexpected request. Howard fell silent, his throat tightening. “Didn’t you say I was too suspicious?” Yvette tightened her grip on his arm playfully. “Give me a baby, and I promise I won’t mention Bobby’s mom again. I swear!”
