Chapter 324
Mirandaโs knees buckled, threatening to bring her to her knees. Miranda Sienna, Howard, and Yvette were all shocked. Sienna quickly steadied Miranda, tears welling in her eyes. โMiranda, donโt! Iโm the child you raised. Iโll see Josiah. I canโt bear to see you like this.โ
โSienna!โ Mirandaโs anxiety mounted. โThank you, dear!โ
Sienna turned to Rosie. โMiranda, Iโll take my friend up first. Her eyesight isnโt good, so itโs a bit inconvenient.โ
Miranda glanced at Rosie. โOh? She seems smart and polite. Go ahead. Iโll wait.โ
โOkay.โ Sienna released Mirandaโs hand, joined Rosie, and linked arms with her. โRosie, letโs go.โ
โOkay.โ Rosie looked at Miranda. โMiranda, Iโm sorry for keeping you.โ
โNever mind.โ Watching them leave, Miranda sighed. โRosie is so polite; itโs a shame sheโs so young and visually impaired.โ
Howard remained silent. Yvetteโs eyes widened beside him. Sheโd noticed something was off with Rosie earlier. Is Rosie blind? she wondered. Why?
Yvette sneered inwardly. Does Howard have a screw loose? How could he be interested in Bobby?
Sienna helped Rosie into the elevator. Taking the opportunity, Rosie disengaged her hand. โOnce weโre back at the apartment, Iโll have Tara help me pack. Then Iโll return to the rehab center.โ
Sienna frowned. โWhy? Unhappy here? Do you feel like a nuisance?โ
Rosie smiled softly. โYouโre overthinking it. Tara needs to care for Joyce, and you need to go to the hospital. I consider you a friend, and I donโt want to be a burden right now.โ
Rosieโs explanation addressed a genuine concern. โDonโt worry, Amyโs care has been lovely. Iโve actually missed her, even after just a few days.โ
Sienna was reassured. โAlright, Iโll arrange a car for you soon. Someone from the nursing home will meet you.โ
Rosie laughed playfully. โI know. Iโm blind, not a child. Plenty of blind people manage just fine.โ
Sienna informed Howard. โHoward, could you remind the nursing home staff to wait at the door for Rosie?โ
Still uneasy, Sienna went downstairs.
Howard responded, โDonโt worry. Iโll arrange transport.โ โThank you, Howard,โ Sienna nodded, surprised.
โNo need to thank me. Itโs a small favor,โ Howard replied.
Sienna found this increasingly odd. Itโs a small task, but why does he seem to be doing so many favors for Rosie?
โHoward, Sienna?โ Miranda called from the other side. โWhat are you two talking about? Letโs go.โ
โWeโre done,โ Howard replied.
โThen letโs get in!โ Miranda turned, leaned in, and entered the car first, muttering, โI have no idea what theyโre talking about.โ
Yvette shook her head, silent, but vaguely heard mention of a nursing home.
They drove to the hospital. Josiah lay quietly, as he had yesterday.
Miranda saw Josiah for the first time since the incident. She couldnโt help but think of Howardโs car accident.
โJosiah,โ she said. โWhatโs happened to you? Are you trying to emulate Howard, even now?โ
7:07 AM
โMiranda,โ Howard said, his voice low, โJosiahโs injuries arenโt serious. Just a head injury. A few scrapes, nothing broken.โ
Miranda gently touched Josiahโs cheek. โYeah, he looks like heโs just sleeping.โ
Suddenly, Miranda turned to Sienna, taking her hand. โSienna, itโs been hard on you. Stay with him, talk to him often. The doctors say Josiah is doing well otherwise.โ
Sienna furrowed her brows. โMiranda, Iโll try, but it may not help.โ
โItโs okay!โ Miranda patted Siennaโs hand, her eyes slightly red. โI donโt want to pressure you, but with him like this, shouldnโt we do our best? You used to be good friends.โ
โMhm.โ Sienna nodded, her eyes downcast.
โHoward,โ Miranda instructed, โMake sure this place is cleaned up and get everything Sienna might need.โ Howard nodded. โDonโt worry, Miranda. I would have done it anyway.โ
Miranda sighed, tears welling. โYes, you and Josiah have always been close, especially after going through life and death together. Iโm not worried. Just some extra advice.โ
With Josiahโs condition, too many visitors at once werenโt ideal. After a short while, Miranda left with Howard and Yvette, leaving Sienna behind.
Before leaving, Miranda held Siennaโs hand. โSienna, thank you for all your hard work.โ
Sienna pulled up a chair beside Josiahโs bed. She was alone; the nurse was preparing medicine, and the caretaker was busy.
Following the doctor's instructions, Sienna knew her role was to keep Josiah company and talk to him.
What should I say? Sienna thought. Even to help him wake up, I canโt pretend we'll get back together and live happily ever after.
Sienna smirked, her laughter cold and clear. โYouโve got some nerve. Your headโs busted, yet you still dared to rush to Sunshine Neighborhood! So capable, and look at you now. Do you think Iโm moved?โ
Sienna lowered her gaze. โJosiah, listen. You donโt have the luxury to sleep through this. For Joyceโs sake, you canโt let anything happen to you!โ
The ventilatorโs rhythmic sound was the only response. Siennaโs eyelashes trembled as she opened her music player and played the song they usually danced to.
โLet me tell you about Joyce,โ Sienna said, speaking of what he loved without pretense. โWhen Joyce was born, she wasnโt small, seven pounds.โ
Recalling the past, Sienna smiled softly, her eyes misty. โI didnโt have a big belly, but she wasnโt small. The nurse said it was quite unexpected.โ
Joyce was well-behaved, never fussy. Once full, sheโd sleep quietly through the night. At six months, when she was weaned from night feedingsโฆ Sienna spoke softly as Josiah continued to sleep quietly, without reaction.
That evening, at the Flynn residence, Howard came to say goodnight to Miranda.
Miranda gestured for him to sit. โHoward, youโre just in time. I have something to ask you.โ
