Chapter 324

Mirandaโ€™s knees buckled, threatening to bring her to her knees. Miranda Sienna, Howard, and Yvette were all shocked. Sienna quickly steadied Miranda, tears welling in her eyes. โ€œMiranda, donโ€™t! Iโ€™m the child you raised. Iโ€™ll see Josiah. I canโ€™t bear to see you like this.โ€

โ€œSienna!โ€ Mirandaโ€™s anxiety mounted. โ€œThank you, dear!โ€

Sienna turned to Rosie. โ€œMiranda, Iโ€™ll take my friend up first. Her eyesight isnโ€™t good, so itโ€™s a bit inconvenient.โ€

Miranda glanced at Rosie. โ€œOh? She seems smart and polite. Go ahead. Iโ€™ll wait.โ€

โ€œOkay.โ€ Sienna released Mirandaโ€™s hand, joined Rosie, and linked arms with her. โ€œRosie, letโ€™s go.โ€

โ€œOkay.โ€ Rosie looked at Miranda. โ€œMiranda, Iโ€™m sorry for keeping you.โ€

โ€œNever mind.โ€ Watching them leave, Miranda sighed. โ€œRosie is so polite; itโ€™s a shame sheโ€™s so young and visually impaired.โ€

Howard remained silent. Yvetteโ€™s eyes widened beside him. Sheโ€™d noticed something was off with Rosie earlier. Is Rosie blind? she wondered. Why?

Yvette sneered inwardly. Does Howard have a screw loose? How could he be interested in Bobby?

Sienna helped Rosie into the elevator. Taking the opportunity, Rosie disengaged her hand. โ€œOnce weโ€™re back at the apartment, Iโ€™ll have Tara help me pack. Then Iโ€™ll return to the rehab center.โ€

Sienna frowned. โ€œWhy? Unhappy here? Do you feel like a nuisance?โ€

Rosie smiled softly. โ€œYouโ€™re overthinking it. Tara needs to care for Joyce, and you need to go to the hospital. I consider you a friend, and I donโ€™t want to be a burden right now.โ€

Rosieโ€™s explanation addressed a genuine concern. โ€œDonโ€™t worry, Amyโ€™s care has been lovely. Iโ€™ve actually missed her, even after just a few days.โ€

Sienna was reassured. โ€œAlright, Iโ€™ll arrange a car for you soon. Someone from the nursing home will meet you.โ€

Rosie laughed playfully. โ€œI know. Iโ€™m blind, not a child. Plenty of blind people manage just fine.โ€

Sienna informed Howard. โ€œHoward, could you remind the nursing home staff to wait at the door for Rosie?โ€

Still uneasy, Sienna went downstairs.

Howard responded, โ€œDonโ€™t worry. Iโ€™ll arrange transport.โ€ โ€œThank you, Howard,โ€ Sienna nodded, surprised.

โ€œNo need to thank me. Itโ€™s a small favor,โ€ Howard replied.

Sienna found this increasingly odd. Itโ€™s a small task, but why does he seem to be doing so many favors for Rosie?

โ€œHoward, Sienna?โ€ Miranda called from the other side. โ€œWhat are you two talking about? Letโ€™s go.โ€

โ€œWeโ€™re done,โ€ Howard replied.

โ€œThen letโ€™s get in!โ€ Miranda turned, leaned in, and entered the car first, muttering, โ€œI have no idea what theyโ€™re talking about.โ€

Yvette shook her head, silent, but vaguely heard mention of a nursing home.

They drove to the hospital. Josiah lay quietly, as he had yesterday.

Miranda saw Josiah for the first time since the incident. She couldnโ€™t help but think of Howardโ€™s car accident.

โ€œJosiah,โ€ she said. โ€œWhatโ€™s happened to you? Are you trying to emulate Howard, even now?โ€

7:07 AM

โ€œMiranda,โ€ Howard said, his voice low, โ€œJosiahโ€™s injuries arenโ€™t serious. Just a head injury. A few scrapes, nothing broken.โ€

Miranda gently touched Josiahโ€™s cheek. โ€œYeah, he looks like heโ€™s just sleeping.โ€

Suddenly, Miranda turned to Sienna, taking her hand. โ€œSienna, itโ€™s been hard on you. Stay with him, talk to him often. The doctors say Josiah is doing well otherwise.โ€

Sienna furrowed her brows. โ€œMiranda, Iโ€™ll try, but it may not help.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s okay!โ€ Miranda patted Siennaโ€™s hand, her eyes slightly red. โ€œI donโ€™t want to pressure you, but with him like this, shouldnโ€™t we do our best? You used to be good friends.โ€

โ€œMhm.โ€ Sienna nodded, her eyes downcast.

โ€œHoward,โ€ Miranda instructed, โ€œMake sure this place is cleaned up and get everything Sienna might need.โ€ Howard nodded. โ€œDonโ€™t worry, Miranda. I would have done it anyway.โ€

Miranda sighed, tears welling. โ€œYes, you and Josiah have always been close, especially after going through life and death together. Iโ€™m not worried. Just some extra advice.โ€

With Josiahโ€™s condition, too many visitors at once werenโ€™t ideal. After a short while, Miranda left with Howard and Yvette, leaving Sienna behind.

Before leaving, Miranda held Siennaโ€™s hand. โ€œSienna, thank you for all your hard work.โ€

Sienna pulled up a chair beside Josiahโ€™s bed. She was alone; the nurse was preparing medicine, and the caretaker was busy.

Following the doctor's instructions, Sienna knew her role was to keep Josiah company and talk to him.

What should I say? Sienna thought. Even to help him wake up, I canโ€™t pretend we'll get back together and live happily ever after.

Sienna smirked, her laughter cold and clear. โ€œYouโ€™ve got some nerve. Your headโ€™s busted, yet you still dared to rush to Sunshine Neighborhood! So capable, and look at you now. Do you think Iโ€™m moved?โ€

Sienna lowered her gaze. โ€œJosiah, listen. You donโ€™t have the luxury to sleep through this. For Joyceโ€™s sake, you canโ€™t let anything happen to you!โ€

The ventilatorโ€™s rhythmic sound was the only response. Siennaโ€™s eyelashes trembled as she opened her music player and played the song they usually danced to.

โ€œLet me tell you about Joyce,โ€ Sienna said, speaking of what he loved without pretense. โ€œWhen Joyce was born, she wasnโ€™t small, seven pounds.โ€

Recalling the past, Sienna smiled softly, her eyes misty. โ€œI didnโ€™t have a big belly, but she wasnโ€™t small. The nurse said it was quite unexpected.โ€

Joyce was well-behaved, never fussy. Once full, sheโ€™d sleep quietly through the night. At six months, when she was weaned from night feedingsโ€ฆ Sienna spoke softly as Josiah continued to sleep quietly, without reaction.

That evening, at the Flynn residence, Howard came to say goodnight to Miranda.

Miranda gestured for him to sit. โ€œHoward, youโ€™re just in time. I have something to ask you.โ€
