Chapter 369

A few seconds of silence stretched between them. Josiahโ€™s voice, soft and low, finally broke the quiet. โ€œYes, I like you. Itโ€™s true. How could I not like a girl who literally saved my life?โ€

Yvetteโ€™s heart eased, tears shimmering in her eyes. โ€œJosiahโ€ฆโ€

His gaze darkened, his voice growing heavier. โ€œBut Yvette, you and Howard have been together for over ten years. Not once did I feel a hint of jealousy. I only felt happy for you two.โ€

The light in Yvetteโ€™s eyes began to dim. Josiah took a deep breath, as if releasing a long-held tension. โ€œDo you understand what this means?โ€

โ€œNoโ€ฆโ€ Yvetteโ€™s heart raced, her head shaking frantically in disbelief.

Josiah stared at her, his voice softening further. โ€œWhat I feel for you is just gratitude. To me, this feeling transcends gender.โ€

He had always treated her as his lifesaver. For years, he had unconditionally protected her, wanting only her happiness.

โ€œNo!โ€ Yvette shook her head, tears streaming down her face. โ€œItโ€™s not true!โ€

โ€œItโ€™s getting late,โ€ Josiah said, looking away, his arm twitching slightly. โ€œYouโ€™re tired. You should rest.โ€

Clearly, he wanted to end the conversation. But Yvette felt trapped. โ€œJosiah, donโ€™t leave!โ€ she cried, her voice desperate, her eyes frantic. โ€œI get it! Itโ€™s because of your grandmother, right? Youโ€™re worried sheโ€™ll oppose it, arenโ€™t you?โ€

As head of the Flynn family, Miranda would never tolerate scandal. Years ago, sheโ€™d forced Yvette to choose between two boys, later arranging for Josiah to be with Sienna.

The more Yvette considered it, the more convinced she became. โ€œHow about we leave the Flynn family? Would that be okay? Iโ€™m willing to leave with you, Josiah!โ€

โ€œYvette,โ€ Josiah said, his voice soft but hesitant.

โ€œI know youโ€™ve built your own career these past years!โ€ Yvette continued, her thoughts spiraling, clouded by obsession. She smiled through her tears. โ€œEven if we leave the Flynn family, with your abilities, we can live just fine. Yes, letโ€™s leave!โ€

She gripped Josiahโ€™s arm tightly. โ€œWeโ€™ll leave the Flynn family. If we leave, we can be together.โ€

โ€œYvette!โ€ Seeing her unwillingness to listen, Josiahโ€™s voice sharpened. โ€œListen to me, okay?โ€

Yvette froze. โ€œOkay.โ€

โ€œThis has nothing to do with Grandma,โ€ Josiah said, shaking his head firmly. โ€œYvette, I donโ€™t have romantic feelings for you. Do you understand?โ€

Yvette trembled, her heart breaking, but she shook her head, unable to accept it. โ€œI donโ€™t believe you!โ€

Josiah rubbed his forehead, sighing deeply. โ€œDonโ€™t you know what kind of person I am? I donโ€™t give in to things I donโ€™t want, not even under family pressure. Even after Sienna and I were married, I kept my distance.โ€

Josiah continued, โ€œHowever, when I want something, no matter her unwillingness, Iโ€™ll pursue it.โ€

โ€œEvery sentence is about Sienna!โ€ Yvette laughed bitterly. โ€œThen what about me? Do I mean nothing to you?โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ Josiah said carefully. โ€œTo me, youโ€™re like a sibling, just like Howard.โ€

Yvette let out a silent, bitter laugh. โ€œThen what about Sienna? Is that love? No, I donโ€™t believe you!โ€ She questioned him sharply. โ€œMaybe it is love, but is there really everlasting love in this world? Didnโ€™t Howard once say heโ€™d only love me forever? Itโ€™s all nonsense!โ€

Her emotions flared. She grabbed Josiahโ€™s arm, her eyes glowing with intensity. โ€œJosiah, forget about Sienna. Starting right now, just think of me as your beloved. We can be together.โ€

โ€œCalm down, Yvette!โ€ Josiah seized her wrist, firmly removing her hand. โ€œOur situation has nothing to do with Sienna. Even without her, it would still be impossible because Iโ€™ve never had romantic feelings for you. You, I, and Howardโ€”weโ€™re family.โ€

He paused. โ€œEven if I hadnโ€™t met Sienna, I would fall for someone else.โ€ It would never be her.

Yvette froze, her grip loosening.

Josiah took a step back, pausing before turning. After a few steps, he glanced back at the still-seated Yvette. โ€œSienna has already agreed to my proposal. Weโ€™re getting married.โ€

Without another word, he left the ward.

Yvette sat in the wheelchair, her gaze unfocused. She heard him speaking to the nurse outside, giving instructions: โ€œKeep an eye on her. Donโ€™t leave her alone again.โ€

โ€œUnderstood, Mr. Flynn,โ€ the nurse replied.

Yvette sneered. Is he worried I might โ€œdo something drasticโ€ again? she thought. Ha, I wonโ€™t. He and Sienna are getting married, arenโ€™t they? How could I just give up on everything? I have to stay alive and watch if they really can make it to the end.

She looked down at her legs. They are all happy together, and what about me? Am I just supposed to die alone? No way!

The weather warmed, mornings arriving earlier. When Josiah arrived at Sunshine Neighborhood, Sienna had just woken and hadnโ€™t yet freshened up. Tara was in the kitchen. Sienna opened the door.

โ€œGood morning,โ€ Josiah said, holding flowers and a bag from Tasty Bites. โ€œFreshly baked egg tarts. You and Joyce both like them, right?โ€

Sienna took the bag, saying little.

โ€œIโ€™ll go check on Joyce,โ€ Josiah said.

โ€œSheโ€™s not awake yet,โ€ Sienna replied.

โ€œThatโ€™s fine. Iโ€™ll just stay with her.โ€

Sienna didnโ€™t stop him. She arranged the flowers. Soon, their small talk filled the room.

โ€œGood morning, Mr. Flynn!โ€ Joyce said cheerfully.

โ€œGood morning, Joyce.โ€ Josiah handed her a dress. โ€œWow, your dress is so pretty!โ€

Joyce twirled, beaming. โ€œWow, I look so beautiful!โ€

Josiah raised an eyebrow. โ€œYouโ€™ve always looked pretty.โ€

Joyceโ€™s expression grew serious. โ€œYouโ€™re right. Weโ€™re both pretty humans!โ€
