Chapter 369
A few seconds of silence stretched between them. Josiahโs voice, soft and low, finally broke the quiet. โYes, I like you. Itโs true. How could I not like a girl who literally saved my life?โ
Yvetteโs heart eased, tears shimmering in her eyes. โJosiahโฆโ
His gaze darkened, his voice growing heavier. โBut Yvette, you and Howard have been together for over ten years. Not once did I feel a hint of jealousy. I only felt happy for you two.โ
The light in Yvetteโs eyes began to dim. Josiah took a deep breath, as if releasing a long-held tension. โDo you understand what this means?โ
โNoโฆโ Yvetteโs heart raced, her head shaking frantically in disbelief.
Josiah stared at her, his voice softening further. โWhat I feel for you is just gratitude. To me, this feeling transcends gender.โ
He had always treated her as his lifesaver. For years, he had unconditionally protected her, wanting only her happiness.
โNo!โ Yvette shook her head, tears streaming down her face. โItโs not true!โ
โItโs getting late,โ Josiah said, looking away, his arm twitching slightly. โYouโre tired. You should rest.โ
Clearly, he wanted to end the conversation. But Yvette felt trapped. โJosiah, donโt leave!โ she cried, her voice desperate, her eyes frantic. โI get it! Itโs because of your grandmother, right? Youโre worried sheโll oppose it, arenโt you?โ
As head of the Flynn family, Miranda would never tolerate scandal. Years ago, sheโd forced Yvette to choose between two boys, later arranging for Josiah to be with Sienna.
The more Yvette considered it, the more convinced she became. โHow about we leave the Flynn family? Would that be okay? Iโm willing to leave with you, Josiah!โ
โYvette,โ Josiah said, his voice soft but hesitant.
โI know youโve built your own career these past years!โ Yvette continued, her thoughts spiraling, clouded by obsession. She smiled through her tears. โEven if we leave the Flynn family, with your abilities, we can live just fine. Yes, letโs leave!โ
She gripped Josiahโs arm tightly. โWeโll leave the Flynn family. If we leave, we can be together.โ
โYvette!โ Seeing her unwillingness to listen, Josiahโs voice sharpened. โListen to me, okay?โ
Yvette froze. โOkay.โ
โThis has nothing to do with Grandma,โ Josiah said, shaking his head firmly. โYvette, I donโt have romantic feelings for you. Do you understand?โ
Yvette trembled, her heart breaking, but she shook her head, unable to accept it. โI donโt believe you!โ
Josiah rubbed his forehead, sighing deeply. โDonโt you know what kind of person I am? I donโt give in to things I donโt want, not even under family pressure. Even after Sienna and I were married, I kept my distance.โ
Josiah continued, โHowever, when I want something, no matter her unwillingness, Iโll pursue it.โ
โEvery sentence is about Sienna!โ Yvette laughed bitterly. โThen what about me? Do I mean nothing to you?โ
โNo,โ Josiah said carefully. โTo me, youโre like a sibling, just like Howard.โ
Yvette let out a silent, bitter laugh. โThen what about Sienna? Is that love? No, I donโt believe you!โ She questioned him sharply. โMaybe it is love, but is there really everlasting love in this world? Didnโt Howard once say heโd only love me forever? Itโs all nonsense!โ
Her emotions flared. She grabbed Josiahโs arm, her eyes glowing with intensity. โJosiah, forget about Sienna. Starting right now, just think of me as your beloved. We can be together.โ
โCalm down, Yvette!โ Josiah seized her wrist, firmly removing her hand. โOur situation has nothing to do with Sienna. Even without her, it would still be impossible because Iโve never had romantic feelings for you. You, I, and Howardโweโre family.โ
He paused. โEven if I hadnโt met Sienna, I would fall for someone else.โ It would never be her.
Yvette froze, her grip loosening.
Josiah took a step back, pausing before turning. After a few steps, he glanced back at the still-seated Yvette. โSienna has already agreed to my proposal. Weโre getting married.โ
Without another word, he left the ward.
Yvette sat in the wheelchair, her gaze unfocused. She heard him speaking to the nurse outside, giving instructions: โKeep an eye on her. Donโt leave her alone again.โ
โUnderstood, Mr. Flynn,โ the nurse replied.
Yvette sneered. Is he worried I might โdo something drasticโ again? she thought. Ha, I wonโt. He and Sienna are getting married, arenโt they? How could I just give up on everything? I have to stay alive and watch if they really can make it to the end.
She looked down at her legs. They are all happy together, and what about me? Am I just supposed to die alone? No way!
The weather warmed, mornings arriving earlier. When Josiah arrived at Sunshine Neighborhood, Sienna had just woken and hadnโt yet freshened up. Tara was in the kitchen. Sienna opened the door.
โGood morning,โ Josiah said, holding flowers and a bag from Tasty Bites. โFreshly baked egg tarts. You and Joyce both like them, right?โ
Sienna took the bag, saying little.
โIโll go check on Joyce,โ Josiah said.
โSheโs not awake yet,โ Sienna replied.
โThatโs fine. Iโll just stay with her.โ
Sienna didnโt stop him. She arranged the flowers. Soon, their small talk filled the room.
โGood morning, Mr. Flynn!โ Joyce said cheerfully.
โGood morning, Joyce.โ Josiah handed her a dress. โWow, your dress is so pretty!โ
Joyce twirled, beaming. โWow, I look so beautiful!โ
Josiah raised an eyebrow. โYouโve always looked pretty.โ
Joyceโs expression grew serious. โYouโre right. Weโre both pretty humans!โ
