Chapter 80
Miranda was momentarily stunned. “What do you mean by ‘someone better’? Who?”
She suspiciously sized up her grandson and asked, “When did you become so invested in Sienna’s affairs?” Then she nodded. “Alright, tell me. If he’s better than Cedric, I’ll reconsider.”
“Grandma…” Josiah’s brow twitched, feeling embarrassed. Considering his personality, once he’d said it, there was no turning back. But if he didn’t say it now, he might lose Sienna. “What about me? Am I good enough?”
After he finished speaking, Miranda was stunned. She stared at him as if he were a stranger, bewildered and frozen. After a while, Miranda’s eyes moved as she tapped her head. “I’m getting old and woozy.” Otherwise, how could she hear something so ridiculous! She turned and walked inside, calling out, “Linda, where’s my medicine! It’s time for my pills.”
Josiah, torn between laughing and crying, stopped his grandmother. “Yes or no, just give me an answer.”
“No!” Unexpectedly, Miranda spun around and gave him a firm answer.
“Why?” Josiah was shocked, unable to believe it. “Haven’t you always hoped we would be happy together?” After all, Miranda had initially set them up as a couple.
“Are you asking me why?” Miranda looked serious, shook her head, and said with a meaningful tone, “Come on, be kind, and stop causing trouble.”
Josiah was taken aback. “How am I causing trouble?”
Miranda frowned. “If you’re not causing trouble, then what? Are you crazy? I know you don’t like Sienna and you’re trying to meddle between her and Cedric, aren’t you?”
“Grandma…” Josiah couldn’t get a word in.
“Oh, Josiah,” Miranda took his hand and patted it. “Just let her go. It’s not easy for Sienna to be with someone like Cedric, but I can tell that Cedric genuinely cares for her. She’s lived a long life, met many people, and seen many things. Cedric’s affection for Sienna is obvious.”
“Grandma…” Josiah felt helpless. He was paying the price for his actions.
Josiah nodded, admitting reluctantly, “You’re right. I didn’t like her before, but that was then.”
Hearing this, Miranda was surprised. She stared at Josiah without blinking. Just as she could understand Cedric’s feelings, she could now tell that Josiah was serious. She asked, “Are you telling the truth?”
Josiah nodded firmly, his eyes sincere. “Yeah, it’s true.”
“Huh?” Miranda gasped softly, the impact significant. After a long pause, she shook her head. “Why! In the past, you hated her so much.”
Josiah had no idea how to explain it. If he could explain it now, he might understand why he disliked her so much back then. But in truth, it seemed like there was no reason for any of it.
Josiah could only say, “Grandma, I want to get Sienna back. You’ll help me, right?”
Miranda stood speechless, her mouth open. She couldn’t find the words, not knowing what to say. She couldn’t know why, after his surgery recovery, Josiah would change so much.
Even though Josiah didn’t get a promise from Miranda, he felt a little relieved. After all, Miranda was his grandma, and there was no way she would not help him. However, that wasn’t enough. What really troubled him now was Sienna’s attitude. He wondered why Sienna refused him and how nice Cedric was. Josiah absolutely wouldn’t admit that Cedric was better than him. If Sienna was unwilling, he’d find a way to make her change her mind.
Later that evening, as Sienna left the Maze, Henry called her to his office.
Sienna said, her back still to him, “What’s up, Mr. White? I need to get to rehearsal. There’s a new dance today.”
“Oh, Sienna,” Henry waved his hands repeatedly, looking troubled. “Well, you don’t have to perform tonight.”
“What?” Sienna was stunned. “Why? Did I do something wrong?” Ever since she joined the Maze, she had done everything Henry instructed, and he’d never shown any dissatisfaction.
Henry sighed deeply and shook his head repeatedly. “No, no, you’re great.” Because of Sienna, the profits of the Maze had soared recently, which was obvious to anyone.
“Then why?” Sienna didn’t understand, but she had a sinking feeling that something was wrong.
“It’s Mr. Flynn,” Sure enough, Henry said his name.
Sienna felt a heavy weight on her chest. “Why would he do this?”
Henry said helplessly, “Mr. Flynn never tells us his reasons. He just made it clear that from today on, you’re not allowed to dance anymore.”
Sienna’s shoulders slumped, and her face turned pale.
Henry was puzzled. “Didn’t he tell you?”
“No,” Sienna shook her head slowly. For something that would cut her off from her livelihood, why would he tell her?
“How can that be?” Henry mumbled. “It shouldn’t be like this. He dotes on you so much.” He laughed as he spoke. He was genuinely afraid of Josiah. Even though losing Sienna was a huge loss for the Maze, Josiah was someone he couldn’t afford to offend.
“Sienna, don’t overthink it. He must be concerned about you, not wanting you to work so hard. Well, with Josiah’s status, he can support you, right? From now on, you can just enjoy life,” said Henry.
Not a word of what Henry said got through to Sienna. All she knew was that she couldn’t lose her job, at least not right now. Although Hannah would lend her the operation fees and Sienna didn’t have to worry about that now, Joyce’s long-term treatment needed more money. She asked, “Mr. White, can I keep dancing? I don’t need anyone to support me.”
Henry hesitated, shaking his head. “Sorry, I’m afraid that you can’t.” As long as Josiah had said that, in Jelacrity, no one dared to offend him. Sienna didn’t want to make things harder for Henry. She knew it had to be resolved by herself.
“Then I won’t bother you any longer. Thank you, Mr. White,” said Sienna.
Henry said, “Good luck.”
After leaving the Maze, Sienna picked up her phone, found Josiah’s number, and pressed the call button.
