Chapter 117: Aurora

On the way to the hospital, I fidgeted incessantly. If Damon found me with Dimitri, a fight was inevitable, and I wanted no part of it. I knew I wasn't doing anything wrong, but still… I didn't want to argue with Damon; things were going so well.

We used one of Dimitri's cars; I didn't want Damon's drivers reporting me, though I suspected they'd seen me leave with Dimitri. I'd deal with that later.

We arrived quickly. Dimitri led me to Aurora's room—he'd visited last night and knew where it was. At the door of Room 4, I activated my phone's recorder. I planned to get a confession.

"Smart," he mouthed, and I grinned before we entered.

Aurora looked up, then glanced behind me, probably hoping for Damon. When she didn't see him, her face soured.

"Why are you here? And why won't you leave me alone, Dimitri?" she demanded, turning to him. He pulled up a chair, folding his arms.

"Because I enjoy looking at your face, sweet cheeks," he replied. She rolled her eyes and turned to me.

"You're the last person I expected to see," she said. I nodded.

"Rest assured, Damon won't be visiting. If you're waiting for him, you'll be waiting a long time," I said. She glared.

"So you came here to rub it in that you have my man now?" she asked. I smiled.

"He was never your man, we both know that. And how do you think Damon will react when he learns about your dirty deeds?" I countered. Her face went white, her eyes glazing over with fear.

"What did you tell her?" she hissed, glaring at me. Dimitri gave her a cocky grin.

"Only the truth, babe," he replied. I could practically see a vein throbbing in her head.

"Did you really do all that? I can hardly believe it, though he showed me proof, but I want to hear it from you. Maybe I can help somehow," I said, trying to lure a confession.

Her face grew serious; then, a glint appeared in her eyes as realization dawned.

"Really? Or are you just trying to record a confession?" she asked, tilting her head. I smiled. I knew she wouldn't fall for it. No truly evil mastermind would. But now I knew Dimitri wasn't lying. "You're right. You're too smart for us. Dimitri, let's go," I said, keeping my eyes on her.

"So soon?" he asked, slowly rising.

"Yes. She's not going to talk, and I won't waste my time. You may think you've won, but I know how evil you are, and I'll fight back mercilessly. Are you ready?" I asked. She scoffed, a wicked glint in her eyes.

"I should be asking you that," she replied. I smirked.

"We'll see. I'd say 'get well soon,' but since you caused your illness, that's unnecessary, right?" I said mockingly. Her eyes widened in shock.

I said nothing more and left with Dimitri.

"Why are we leaving? We achieved nothing," Dimitri said behind me.

"We weren't going to. I just wanted to be sure I could trust you, and now I do," I replied as we left the hospital.

"Wow, you doubted me?" he asked. I nodded. "You said you still liked Aurora. I had to make sure you weren't working with her to get rid of me."

"Believe it or not, I care about my family and my brother. You're good for him, and I'd never try to get rid of you," he replied. I smiled.

"Thank you, but right now, Damon dislikes you, and he especially doesn't like seeing me with you," I said. He pouted.

"That's harsh," he murmured.

"It is, but it's true. It'll be hard for us to meet like this. I don't want to anger him. We may have to work individually until I can get Damon to accept you as his brother again," I said. He sighed.

"I'm going to miss you, Mademoiselle," he murmured. I rolled my eyes.

"You call me everything but my real name," I complained as we got in the car.

"Get used to it, sweet cheeks," he grinned. He and Damon were so similar, yet so different.

Damon wasn't home when I returned. I showered and changed; I didn't want him to smell Dimitri on me like last time. I still didn't understand how he'd detected it when Dimitri hadn't touched me.

As I pulled on my shirt, Damon appeared behind me, materializing against the closet door.

"I missed you," he murmured. I grinned, turning to him and running into his arms. "I missed you too," I replied, resting my head on his chest as he embraced me. "What did you do today?" he asked. My heart skipped a beat—I thought he'd found out—but he genuinely wanted to know, a question he always asked.

"My day was boring, I don't want to bore you," I said. He chuckled, cupping my face.

"You can never bore me. Your voice is like a siren song, always pulling me in. Even if you just lay in bed all day, tell me everything. I want to hear it."
