Chapter 64

Liam

“You can’t keep ignoring me!” Veronica yelled, stamping her feet. I sighed and glanced up.

“I’m not ignoring you. I just don’t have time for your tantrums; I’m busy,” I murmured, turning back to my document. She snatched it and threw it on the floor.

“I’m the one here, by your side, and yet you still think about her? She’s someone’s mate and wife, for Christ’s sake. She doesn’t even want you anymore; she doesn’t love—”

“Shut your mouth! What do you fucking know about love? If you hadn’t come into my life, Clara would still be mine!” I screamed. Her eyes widened in shock. I’d never yelled at her before, but her constant nagging was getting to me.

I was feeling emotional these days. Clara wasn’t giving me any attention; it was as if she’d forgotten me. But I wasn’t giving up. What we had was pure love; that bastard was just brainwashing her. Soon, she’d know who really loved her.

“You didn’t force me to choose you, Liam. You chose me of your own free will,” she murmured. I scoffed.

“I never chose you, Veronica. Who in their right mind would choose you over Clara? You manipulated me into pushing Clara away, but you can never be her, and I can never love you the way I loved her,” I murmured. Disbelief was written all over her face.

Truth be told, my feelings—or rather, our mate bond—were slowly fading with each passing day. All I could think about was Clara. Every time I heard news of her fights with Alpha Damon, I expected her to come running to me, but instead, she…

“Damon has filed for divorce, and very soon Clara will be free from him. Be ready to pack your things and leave because I don’t want you here when she gets back,” I murmured, standing up.

I was about to walk past her when she screamed, “What is wrong with you? I’m your mate, not her! You should love me!”

“Well, I don’t, and I don’t know if I ever will. Stop fucking screaming,” I muttered. She threw herself at my feet.

“Please love me, Liam. I won’t nag anymore; I won’t talk bad about Clara. Just please love me,” she pleaded. I frowned and sighed. Even though I didn’t love her romantically, she was still my mate.

“That’s enough. Get up,” I murmured, extending my hand. She was about to take it when a guard burst into my office, his eyes frantic.

“Alpha, we are under attack!” he screamed. Without hesitation, I rushed out with him trailing behind.

“Situation?” I asked.

“Alpha Damon is attacking the pack. The guards are trying to hold him off, but he’s too powerful,” he replied. I halted, my eyes widening.

“You’re fighting him back?” I asked. He nodded slowly.

“Yes, Alpha.” I grabbed his neck.

“You fool! That’s the Death Viper; you don’t fucking fight back! He’s going to kill us all!” I muttered, releasing him and running towards the commotion. Why was Damon attacking my pack? What was going on?

“Tell them to stop fighting back!” I screamed, running out. Damon barged in, two severed heads in his hands. He was covered in blood, and his smirk sent chills down my spine. Behind him were his Beta and a woman who, judging by her resemblance, must be his sister.

“To what do I owe this pleasure, Alpha Damon?” I muttered through clenched teeth, bowing my head. Only the Goddess knew how many people he’d killed before arriving.

“You didn’t train your guards well. How dare they try to ward me off?” He threw a head to the ground and entered the house.

“I’m sorry for my incompetence. May I ask what I’ve done to anger you?” I asked. He shook his head.

“You’ve done a lot, but I’m not here for you. Where are your family members?” My aunts, uncles, cousins, Veronica, and my mother rushed down.

They bowed their heads as soon as they saw Damon.

“Alpha Damon,” they chorused. He hummed, turning to Aunt Amelia.

“You must be Aunt Amelia,” he said. Her eyes widened.

“Yes, Alpha. It’s a privilege to meet you,” she murmured. I tilted my head.

“You’re like a mother to my wife, so it’s a privilege to meet you. I know you love Clara, and therefore you’re going to tell me the truth. Who among them bullied my wife when she was here?” Everyone froze.

“What?” she asked. He frowned.

“Well, I don’t believe I stuttered, did I?” he murmured. She hurriedly shook her head.

“No, but…”

“Point it out now, or I’m going to start punishing anyone I like,” he muttered. I stared at him, wide-eyed.

“Alpha Damon, what is this about?” I asked. He turned to me.

“I originally came here for your mother, but while I’m here, why don’t I just avenge my wife?” He was here for my mother?

“If I may ask… why… why are you here for me?” My mother asked softly. His aura turned cold. Even the others seemed to hate her. This wasn’t going to end well.

“You know what to do, Delilah,” Damon muttered. The girl stepped forward and approached my mother, tying her hair back.

“What is the meaning of this?” I asked frantically, knowing what was about to happen.

“Your mother told my wife she was barren, and because of that, my wife lost our child. Now, your mother is about to lose her life,” he said nonchalantly.

“What?” Aunt Amelia gasped, tears streaming down her cheeks.

“You should call Clara; she’ll need you,” he murmured softly. Aunt Amelia ran upstairs to get her phone.

“Mother? Is this true?” I asked, turning to my mother. Her face told me the answer.

“I’m sorry. I just told her that because I didn’t want her using a baby to trap you,” my mother confessed. I frowned.

“Please, let’s talk this out. That’s my mother,” I pleaded, but I knew this was beyond reasoning.

“I won’t let you hurt my mother,” I muttered, standing before him. He smiled.

“Do you really think you can stop me?” he asked. Even if I couldn’t, I would die trying. I didn’t agree with my mother’s actions, and I was angry because I knew Clara always wanted a child. She must have been devastated thinking she was barren. Still, she was my mother, and everything she did was because she thought it was best for me. It wasn’t right, but she was my mother.

“My brother isn’t going to kill her, Tam,” the woman said. Before I could move, she slapped my mother, sending her to the ground.

“Mother!” I screamed, but Damon’s Beta grabbed me from behind.

“Damon is not in a good mood, so I’d advise you to mind your actions,” he muttered. I glared at him.

“That’s my mother,” I muttered.

“And because of her lie, Clara and Damon lost their first child. How do you think they feel? This is his way of coping with loss, and if I were you, I wouldn’t anger him unless you want everyone in your pack dead,” Luca muttered. I clenched my fist, watching the girl beat my mother mercilessly.

My other family members remained still. No one dared oppose Damon—that’s how powerful he was.

“My friend went through a lot because of you!” Delilah screamed, about to deliver a final blow when Damon stopped her.

“Halt. Step away from her,” he muttered. We all stared in shock.

“Why?” the woman whined. He turned to her.

“Because I want her to kneel before my wife and beg for her life. If my wife chooses to spare her, then good for her, but if she doesn’t, I’ll end her myself…”
