Chapter 236

When I left the presidentโ€™s office, I noticed everyone was staring. Were they waiting to see how Mr. Humphrey, in his foul mood, would punish me? As I emerged unscathed, a flicker of disappointment crossed several colleagues' faces. I sneered inwardly; I had indeed disappointed them.

Melany hurried over, asking, โ€œHow did it go, Esmeralda? Did Mr. Humphrey say anything?โ€ I handed her the reportโ€”a crumpled ball Reynaldo had madeโ€”and said, โ€œMr. Humphrey said your report was too rigid and complicated, a mere template. He was furious and told you to leave.โ€

Melanyโ€™s face blanched, tears welling. โ€œWhat should I do? I canโ€™t afford to lose this job.โ€

Last night, my daughterโ€™s fussing had led to a hastily completed report. โ€œEsmeralda, Iโ€™ll redo it, immediately. Please speak to Mr. Humphrey; beg him not to fire me,โ€ she pleaded.

โ€œTsk, Melany, did you ask the wrong person?โ€ someone scoffed. Another chimed in, mockingly, โ€œKimberly, perhaps? Beg her? Hilarious. Does she even have that power?โ€

Chapter 236

โ€œMr. Humphrey favors Kimberly above all. Asking someone he despises to intercede is madness,โ€ someone pointed out.

โ€œBut I donโ€™t know if Kimberlyโ€™s even at work today, or if sheโ€™d help,โ€ Melany sobbed.

โ€œThen you neednโ€™t bother Ms. Duffy; what could she possibly do?โ€ another sneered.

โ€œHumphrey was probably even angrier because he saw her; thatโ€™s why he wanted to fire you. You shouldnโ€™t have let her deliver the reports!โ€ another added.

โ€œSheโ€™s a jinx! Before she arrived, Mr. Humphrey was never this gloomy. Itโ€™s all her fault,โ€ someone else declared.

I calmly stated to Melany, โ€œDonโ€™t worry, I told Mr. Humphrey I made the report.โ€

Melany was stunned. My colleagues stared in disbelief. โ€œMr. Humphrey didnโ€™t fire you?!โ€

I grinned, humming, โ€œYeah, I disappointed you.โ€

โ€œHmph! Donโ€™t get cocky; he only spared you out of pity,โ€ someone retorted.

โ€œA janitor! How dare he even compare himself to Kimberly?โ€ another scoffed.

I rolled my eyes. These people were tedious. They constantly invoked Kimberly, comparing me to her, ironically mocking my supposed desire to emulate her. I was genuinely impressed.

I ignored them. They seemed bored, too, one by one snorting coldly before returning to their work. Only Melany looked at me with gratitude.

โ€œEsmeralda, I didnโ€™t expect such kindness. Iโ€™m sorry for my initial bad attitude. Iโ€™d heard so many bad things, I prejudged you,โ€ she confessed.

โ€œItโ€™s okay. Redo the report, seriously this time. Iโ€™ll submit it for you.โ€

โ€œUh, okay.โ€

Melany nodded, pulling me aside to whisper, โ€œThey're just trying to flatter Kimberly because they know Mr. Humphrey favors her. Don't worry about them.โ€

I smiled faintly. โ€œYou all noticed Mr. Humphreyโ€™s fondness for Kimberly, didnโ€™t you?โ€

Of course. Despite being a mere secretary, Kimberly enjoyed more privileges than the head of the secretarial team. She entered the presidentโ€™s office unannounced, without knocking.

Most enviable was Mr. Humphreyโ€™s treatment of her. Once, while resting in his office, she craved pastries from a specific shop. He personally queued for over an hour to buy them.

Chapter 236

โ€œHow do you know he waited over an hour?โ€ I asked impassively, doubting Reynaldoโ€™s patience. Of course, genuine devotion might change things.

Melany hesitated. โ€œThey were spreading rumors; everyone said it, speculating they were about to get married.โ€
