After all, one would remain calm if one didnโt care.
It was exactly how Rachel felt about William and Samantha right now; she didnโt care about them one bit. This was probably how an utterly broken heart felt.
Just as wellโan amicable split was miles better than an ugly separation.
At night, when Rachel stepped out of the washroom fresh from a shower, someone barged into her room and gave her a huge fright.
She instinctively tightened her grip over the towel and heaved a sigh of relief when she saw that it was Samantha.
The next moment, her brows furrowed.
โMs. Judd, donโt you know that itโs basic courtesy to knock before entering someone elseโs room?โ
Samantha looked down awkwardly. โIโm sorry, Rachel. I forgot.โ
Rachel released the hand clutching her chest and asked, โWhat do you want?โ
โWilliam bought supper and wants you to join us.โ
Rachel hesitated for a moment. Samantha spoke as though she were the mistress of the houseโas if Rachel was the guest Samantha was inviting for a meal.
Samantha saw the hesitation in Rachelโs eyes; she belatedly realized what her tone insinuated and explained anxiously, โIโm sorry, Rachel! Thatโs not what I meant. Iโve always been by myself, you see. Now that you and William are by my side, I feel such an intimate sense of kinship, and I made a slip of the tongue. Iโm really sorry.โ
Samantha then drew nearer to Rachel.
โYou wouldnโt mind, would you, Rachel?โ
Rachel forced a smile on her face, not knowing what to say. Samantha had said it all.
She decided to let things go and said, โLetโs go have supper.โ
With that, she brushed past Samantha and left the room.
William opened the takeout boxes and waved a hand at Rachel.
โRachel, come over and have some supper. I bought some barbecued meat from the South Coast. Didnโt you say you wanted to give it a try?โ
The look on Rachelโs face froze as she stared at William, busy laying out the food.
She didnโt say she wanted to try the food from the South Coastโit was the North Coast.
Samanthaโs eyes lit up when she saw all the food on the table.
โWilliam, the food you bought for Rachel is exactly what I love to eat! This must be from the South Coast. I love the barbecued meat from there!โ
The corners of Rachelโs lips twitched. William didnโt buy it from the wrong location. He simply remembered it wrongly.
Samantha was once again proven to be the one he cared most about. Rachel didnโt stand a chance.
William was still oblivious to the blunder he had made. He opened up the last box and said, โSit down and eat.โ
Rachel didnโt have much appetite and ate slowly. Samantha, on the other hand, was ravenous.
Rachel couldnโt help but glance at her still-flat stomach. She heard that pregnant ladies tended to eat more.
If Williamโs parents knew about Samanthaโs baby, they would be elated.
Over the years, they had been pressuring Rachel and William to have a baby. Much to Rachelโs disappointment, she never got pregnant. It made his parents dislike her even more.
Samanthaโs pregnancy was a clear sign that Rachelโs marriage to William was doomed to end.
William sensed something amiss with Rachel and gently knocked on the table before her. โRachel, is the food not to your liking?โ
Rachel snapped back to attention and forced a smile on her face. โNo, I just donโt have much appetite.โ
โDonโt you like the barbecued meat from this eatery?โ
Rachel put down her fork and said flatly, โI like the one at the North Coast. Samanthaโs the one who likes this.โ
