Chapter 137
The way William looked now was nothing like the cold, distant expression he had worn in the office earlier that day.
As Samantha chewed on a slice of apple, she cast a mildly concerned glance at William. โWilliam, do you think Rachelโs going to be upset you dumped all my work on her?โ
โShe wonโt,โ William replied casually. โRachel canโt sit still. Back when we worked together, she wouldnโt even agree to leave early if you asked her. She insisted on working overtime.โ
Rachel felt nauseous. There was a bitter taste in her mouth. She had never enjoyed working overtime. Back then, William had said his position at the company was unstable and he couldnโt trust anyone else with critical project work. He had begged her to take it on personally. For the sake of his dream, she had worked late nights and pulled all-nighters more times than she could count.
But clearly, he had long forgotten all of that. He had forgotten how he had once gently asked for her help.
Cecilia was about to explode. She clenched her jaw and looked ready to storm into the ward. Despite the pain, Rachel reached out and grabbed her arm.
โDonโt go.โ
Seeing how hard Rachel was trying to stop her, Cecilia reluctantly backed off and led her to the doctor instead.
After a series of tests, the diagnosis came back. Rachel had acute gastritis. The doctor recommended an IV drip immediately.
โHow long will it take?โ Rachel asked anxiously.
โIf the drip works well tonight, you wonโt need to come back tomorrow.โ
โThank you.โ
She let out a sigh of relief. If she had to miss tomorrowโs team-building event because of her health, who knew what kind of drama would unfold.
Cecilia looked at her with sympathy. โYouโre working yourself to death. Even now, youโre still worried aboutโฆโ
โItโs okay. Once the team-building is over, everything will be fine.โ
Cecilia sensed something was off. โRachel, are you hiding something from me? Youโre giving me the feeling like youโre about to leave.โ
Rachelโs expression froze for a moment. For a second she wanted to tell Cecilia the truth: that she really was leaving. She would disappear to a place where William would never find her. This was her drawing a final line under the seven long years of their relationship.
Cecilia was too impulsive and kindhearted. If she found out, she might accidentally spill the beans, and all of Rachelโs plans would fall apart.
Rachel forced a smile. โDonโt be silly. Where would I even go?โ
Cecilia relaxed and patted her chest. โYou scared me. I thought you were actually leaving.โ
Still hooked up to the IV drip, Rachel began to feel the medicine taking effect. The pain in her stomach gradually eased. She glanced at the time on her phone. โItโs getting late. You should head back and get some rest. Iโll grab a cab after the drip finishes.โ
Cecilia hesitated. โCome back with me. You shouldnโt go home tonight. That woman is an eyesore.โ She tilted her head toward the room next door.
Honestly, Cecilia admired Rachel. Her own husband was busy fussing over his calmly. If it had been her, sheโd have blown up already.
Rachel smiled a little. โItโs fine. I need to go back and pack anyway.โ
That made sense. No matter what, Rachel would need to get ready for tomorrowโs event.
Ceciliaโs house was a mess. She was also too embarrassed to insist that Rachel came over. โAlright then. Just take care of yourself, okay? Donโt let this stuff eat away at you.โ
Cecilia gathered her things and left.
Rachel leaned back. She was ready to rest her eyes for a moment when her phone suddenly vibrated.
She looked at the screen. It was a call from Tyler.
