Chapter 138

Why was Tyler calling at this hour?

Rachel took a deep breath. She hesitated before finally sliding her finger across the screen to accept the call.

โ€œWhat is it?โ€

โ€œThereโ€™s still one detail about tomorrowโ€™s team-building event that hasnโ€™t been finalized. Come here for a bit,โ€ Tyler said.

Rachel frowned. She had been the one who drafted the entire proposal for Oasis, so it wasnโ€™t unreasonable for Tyler to call her. But there was a problem.

โ€œIโ€™m in the hospital right now.โ€

โ€œOh? What a coincidence. So am I.โ€

He still sounded as nonchalant and flippant as ever.

Rachel was stunned. Were people scheduling joint hospital visits these days?

She didnโ€™t bother to ask questions. Work came first.

โ€œIโ€™m at City Hospital, Ward 204.โ€

โ€œThe room next to Williamโ€™s?โ€ Tyler sounded surprised.

Rachel felt a little awkward. โ€œYeah.โ€

Tyler couldnโ€™t help but laugh.

โ€œYou two are a real piece of work. Williamโ€™s in the next room fawning over Samantha, while his legally wedded wifeโ€™s just left to fend for herself.โ€

His words hit like a truck.

But Rachel was used to it by now. Tylerโ€™s sarcasm didnโ€™t sting much anymore. It was only the truth.

She changed the subject. โ€œWerenโ€™t you coming over to talk about the team-building plans?โ€

Knock. Knock.

Startled, Rachel nearly dropped her phone. She barely caught it in time to avert disaster.

She took a breath. โ€œCome in.โ€

The door opened, and Tyler walked in with an IV drip hanging from his hand.

Rachel blinked. When heโ€™d said he was in the hospital, she had thought he was just joking. She pointed at the IV drip. โ€œWhat happened to you?โ€

โ€œAllergic reaction,โ€ he said casually.

Rachel was surprised. โ€œYou didnโ€™t know you were allergic to something?โ€

โ€œThey didnโ€™t tell me.โ€ Tyler walked around the room and came to stand beside her bed. โ€œWhat about you? Did you have an allergic reaction too?โ€

โ€œMy stomach is aching.โ€

Rachel didnโ€™t bother giving him the details. Tyler never struck her as someone interested in meddling in other peopleโ€™s personal issues anyway.

He glanced around and noticed there was an empty bed next to hers. Without hesitation, he called someone.

โ€œHey, Iโ€™m in Ward 204. When itโ€™s time to change the IV drip, just come here.โ€

โ€œYes, Mr. Hunt.โ€

He hung up and casually flopped down on the empty bed beside Rachel.

Rachel was startled. Her eyes widened. โ€œWhat are you doing?โ€

โ€œStandingโ€™s exhausting. This is more comfortable. Youโ€™re not seriously going to make a sick man stand while discussing work, are you?โ€

She hesitated. William had always suspected her and Tyler, and she used to care mainly because she didnโ€™t want unnecessary drama.

But after what William had done, she didnโ€™t care anymore.

โ€œFine.โ€

Tyler tried to get comfortable on the bed, but the IV tubing got tangled around his arm and made it hard to move.

Rachel saw him struggling. โ€œLet me help.โ€

She got off her bed and walked over to him, reaching out to untangle the IV tube. She was shorter than Tyler and had to stand on her toes.

Just as she was adjusting the tubing, she lost her balance.

Her eyes went wide in alarm, but by the time she realized what was happening, it was too late.

Tyler only had one hand free, which was holding onto the IV bag. Even if he saw her falling, there was no way he could catch her in time.
