Rachel stayed in her room and tended to the cut on her face using the first-aid kit. What she didnโt know was that downstairs, William had already told Cassandra about Samanthaโs pregnancy.
The moment Cassandra heard it, her face lit up with joy.
โReally? Samanthaโs pregnant? Thatโs wonderful! That means Iโll be holding my grandchild very soon!โ
As she spoke, Cassandra immediately removed the emerald bracelet from her wrist and handed it to Samantha.
โSamantha, this is your first visit to our home, and I donโt have anything better prepared. This emerald bracelet was passed down to me from Williamโs grandmother.โ
Samantha was startled and instinctively tried to refuse. โOh, no, I canโt accept this, Mrs. Lewis. Itโs far too precious. How could I? Besides, this should be something passed down to Mr. Lewisโ wife. I really shouldnโt wear it. I donโt want much. I just want to be with William. I shouldnโt have gone abroad and left him behind back then. This child is the least I can do to make up for that.โ
But Cassandra insisted, pulling Samanthaโs hand over and slipping the bracelet onto her wrist.
Samantha looked down at the translucent emerald bracelet. It had a beautiful luster, and anyone would be captivated by it. She clearly didnโt want to give it up, but she was still hesitant. She glanced at William for help.
โWilliam, this is such a valuable gift from Mrs. Lewis. Are you sure itโs okay for me to accept it?โ
William didnโt seem to mind. โIf itโs from my mom, then go ahead and keep it.โ
Samantha blushed and smiled demurely. โThen, Iโll accept it. Thank you, Mrs. Lewis. If thereโs anything you ever need, donโt hesitate to call me.โ She raised her wrist and admired the bracelet again. She clearly loved it. โBut if Rachel finds out about this, she probably wonโt be too happy. After all, something like this shouldโve been passed down to her, the official daughter-in-law.โ
Cassandra, already biased against Rachel, looked even more displeased. After all these years, Rachel hadnโt shown any signs of producing an heir. What kind of family would tolerate that?
Truth be told, Cassandra had always felt Samantha was the better match for William. Rachel had swooped in out of nowhere. Cassandra had only reluctantly accepted Rachel as Williamโs wife because she had believed Rachel was the Lloyd familyโs heiress. Even if Rachel was deaf, Cassandra had thought she could overlook it for that. After all these years, Rachelโs hearing hadnโt improved.
Cassandra patted Samanthaโs hand affectionately. โDonโt worry about her. Iโll give her something else. You keep the bracelet, and donโt be so courteous with me anymore.โ
โOkay, then Iโll accept it. Thank you, Mrs. Lewis.โ
Samantha smiled sweetly. Her demeanor was so gentle and agreeable that it made Cassandra beam with satisfaction.
Cassandra glanced at William. โWilliam, come here. I have something to talk to you about.โ
William turned to Samantha. โTake a look around by yourself. Iโll go talk with my mom for a bit.โ
โOkay,โ Samantha replied and glanced upstairs. โCan I go up and take a look?โ
โSure.โ William nodded before following Cassandra to the side.
Once Samantha had gone upstairs, Cassandra finally spoke in a more serious tone. โSo what are you planning to do about Rachel? Are you not getting a divorce?โ
William frowned. โDivorce? Why would I?โ
Cassandra was visibly surprised. She looked at him as if he had just said something outrageous.
โYouโre not getting a divorce? Samantha is pregnant, William. And you still donโt plan to divorce Rachel? What do you intend to do when the babyโs born?โ
In her mind, Samanthaโs pregnancy automatically meant Rachel would be replaced. She thought William had long accepted that.
