Chapter 300

William fiddled with the hem of his shirt. The veins bulged in his forehead, and there was a look of intense guilt in his eyes.

What the hell had gotten into him today? No matter what happened, he shouldnโ€™t have laid a hand on Rachel. He definitely shouldnโ€™t have let her get hurt.

Samantha could tell that even though William was physically by her side, his mind had long since drifted to Rachelโ€™s ward.

โ€œWilliam, if you really canโ€™t stop worrying, then just go stay with Rachel. Iโ€™m fine here. The baby shouldnโ€™t be that fragile. If something really does go wrong, then maybe that just means it wasnโ€™t meant to be,โ€ she said softly. โ€œAfter all, it picked the worst possible time to cause trouble.โ€

William turned to look at her and asked, โ€œWhat did the doctor say?โ€

Samantha lowered her head and cast a brief glance at her lower abdomen. โ€œNot much. Just that the fetus is unstable and needs monitoring. If nothing happens tonight, we should be fine. But if I start bleeding, Iโ€™ll have to return to the hospital immediately.โ€

William frowned. He still had to wait and see how tonight went, but Rachelโ€™s condition was completely unknown. How was he supposed to wait that long?

He stood up, grabbed his phone, and said, โ€œRest for a while. Iโ€™m going outside to make a call.โ€

Samantha nodded obediently. โ€œOkay.โ€

William stepped out and quickly dialed Cassandraโ€™s number.

As soon as the call connected, he asked, โ€œMom, howโ€™s Rachel doing?โ€

โ€œSheโ€™s stable for now. Donโ€™t worry, her lifeโ€™s not in danger. But as for when or if sheโ€™ll wake up, they canโ€™t say.โ€

Williamโ€™s expression darkened. โ€œWhat did you say? She might never wake up?โ€ He sounded like he couldnโ€™t believe what he just heard.

Hearing that William was still fixated on Rachel, Cassandra tried to talk some sense into him. โ€œSon, can you be a little more realistic? Rachel might never wake up, and youโ€™re still hung up on her?โ€

But Williamโ€™s thoughts were racing, and he wasnโ€™t listening to anything she said. โ€œMom, what if we switch to a different doctor? Maybe someone better? Would that help?โ€

Cassandra gasped in disbelief. โ€œAre you crazy? You still want to switch doctors? Iโ€™m telling you straight up. Her brainโ€™s injured. Changing doctors wonโ€™t do a thing. Itโ€™s all up to fate now.โ€

Williamโ€™s voice was stern. He could barely conceal his anger. โ€œMom, Rachel is my wife. If thereโ€™s even a chance to save her, Iโ€™m willing to try.โ€

Cassandra was furious. โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong with you? Have you lost your mind? God is giving you a way out, and you still donโ€™t get it. You need to focus on Samantha now. Sheโ€™s carrying your child!

โ€œRachel means nothing. Itโ€™d be better if she didnโ€™t wake up. If she does, letโ€™s see how you plan to deal with that mess.โ€

That was the last straw for William. Just hearing her say that made his heart clench with frustration.

โ€œMom, can we not talk like this during such times?โ€

Cassandra gave up arguing. From her perspective, Rachel probably wouldnโ€™t wake up anyway.

โ€œFine, fine. Iโ€™ll just say this. After all these years, Iโ€™ll finally get a grandchild, and if anything happens to it, itโ€™s on you. Youโ€™ll be the death of me.โ€

With that, Cassandra hung up without waiting for a reply.

Williamโ€™s grip on the phone tightened as he frowned.

He still wanted to go see Rachel. This whole thing was his fault, but he couldnโ€™t just walk away from Samantha either.
