Chapter 308
Soon enough, Cassandra recovered from her shock and said to William, โWhat does this have to do with you? Rachel mustโve messed with someone she shouldnโt have. This isnโt our fault. Itโs not like we wanted her dead.โ
In her mind, things couldnโt be more straightforward. Frankly, she hoped someone would take Rachel out of the picture that way, the marriage would be over, and Samantha could officially take Rachelโs place in the Lewis family. Once Samantha gave birth to her grandchild, their family would finally feel complete.
William rubbed his aching temples. He was visibly trying to rein in his anger.
โYou do realize the reporters outside are watching my every move, right? They already believe everything I did for Rachel before was just for show. Now, if they find out she disappeared under our noses, what do you think theyโre going to say?
โTheyโll start asking the obvious. Wasnโt anyone watching her? How could something like this even happen?โ
Cassandra didnโt hesitate. โJust say I went to the restroom. Simple as that. People need the bathroom, donโt they?โ
William let out a bitter laugh and said under his breath, โMom, do you think these reporters are idiots?โ
Even Cassandra realized that excuse was too weak. โWell, what do we do then? We obviously canโt cover this up, but we canโt call the cops either. If the police get involved, the whole thingโs going to blow up even worse.โ
Just then, the doctor came over with a report. He walked briskly toward them.
โWeโve completed the analysis. The syringe found on the floor contained a lethal compound. We donโt know for sure whether it was injected into the patient.โ
Williamโs face darkened instantly. โWhat are you saying? If it was injected, does she have any chance at all?โ
The doctorโs expression was grim. โI really canโt say for certain. But with this particular drug, the fatality rate is around seventy to eighty percent.โ
Williamโs pupils contracted. Even Cassandraโs legs went weak with fear. Samantha quickly caught her just in time.
โAre you alright, Cassandra?โ
Cassandra clutched Samanthaโs hand tightly. Her face was pale with shock. โWho could Rachel have possibly crossed? Who would want her dead?โ
Samantha was just as stunned. She turned to William instinctively. โYeah, William. Youโve been with Rachel for years. Are you sure she hasnโt had any dangerous associations lately?โ
โNot that Iโve heard of,โ William said, stroking his chin as he racked his brain.
He tried to think of anyone Rachel might have angered recently, but no one came to mind. Who would go so far as to try to kill her?
Cassandra was panicking now. She began to stutter. โIs she dead or alive? Did she even wake up?โ
William shot her a sideways glance. โHow would I know?โ
Cassandra immediately tried to distance herself from responsibility. โWell, this doesnโt have anything to do with us, right? We werenโt the ones trying to kill her. If the Lloyd family asks, weโll just blame it on whoever was after her.โ
But that was exactly what bothered William the most.
โRachel has disappeared. It doesnโt matter if sheโs dead or alive. The Lloyd family will definitely call the police. Once they do, this whole thing will be exposed, and the media will come after us like a pack of wolves!โ
