Rachel knew life and death werenโt things she could control. All she could do now was to stay by Jimโs side and walk with him through his final moments.
โOh, right. Can I trouble you with something else?โ she asked.
โGo ahead,โ Xavier replied.
โCould you keep it a secret that you saw me here?โ
Rachel knew Xavier wasnโt the type to spread rumors, but he did know Tyler.
She still owed Tyler a contract. And being a person who always followed through, Tyler would never let it slide if he found out she had lied to him back then. With his strong sense of justice, he definitely wouldnโt spare her.
Right now, she didnโt want to be involved with anyone here. If it werenโt for Jimโs critical condition, she never wouldโve come back.
To her, this place had long been a closed chapter. Whether it was the people or the things that happened here, none of it had anything to do with her anymore.
Xavier was momentarily stunned. Truthfully, when he saw Rachel, his first instinct had been to inform Tyler right away.
โActually, Tylerโs been trying to find you these past few years. Are you really sure you donโt want me to tell him?โ
Rachel didnโt think too much into it. She just smiled. โLooks like you still havenโt fixed Mr. Huntโs insomnia.โ
Xavier chuckled at that. โTell me about it. Iโve treated a lot of people, but with Tyler, his insomniaโs like a chronic illness. It just wonโt go away. You happen to be his remedy.
Rachel smiled modestly. โYou flatter me. Iโm not that powerful. Itโs probably just a coincidence. Anyway, I should get going.โ
Xavier nodded slightly and watched Rachel head back to the ward. Then, he picked up his phone and sent a message.
[Guess who I just ran into?]
Back in the ward, the doctors had managed to stabilize Jim.
His consciousness gradually returned, and he slowly opened his eyes. When he saw Rachel, he instinctively reached out.
โRโRachel, is it really you?โ
โItโs me, Dad.โ
Jim had been drifting in and out of consciousness. Seeing Rachel earlier had felt like a dream, and heโd feared that if he woke up again, it would all vanish. He had feared that Rachel had never returned, and it was all just his imagination.
But now, feeling her presence so vividly, Jim finally let out a sigh of relief.
It felt like he had come back to life.
โRachel, it really is you. I thought after all these years, you had-โ
He didnโt finish the sentence. He stopped himself from saying anything too ominous. Instead, he nodded repeatedly, and his eyes welled with tears again.
โYouโre back. Thatโs all that matters.โ
Then, as if suddenly remembering something, he reached under his pillow, pulled out a key, and placed it in Rachelโs hand.
โRachel, take this key and go back to the Lloyd family estate. Inside my safe, youโll find the will I prepared a long time ago, along with a letter. After Iโm gone, I want you to bury the letter with me.โ
Rachel looked puzzled. โDad, you really donโt have to go against Sasha and the others for me. Yvetteโs your biological daughter.
โThe fact that you raised me all these years already means more than enough. Youโve done more than anyone could ask. You really donโt need to leave me anything in your will.โ
She believed that if Jim hadnโt left anything to her, maybe Sasha and Yvette wouldnโt have been so ruthless.
