Her Exit 339

Listen to this chapter:

Rachel tried calling for a ride, but in a place like this, there was hardly even another soul around. There was also no way she could walk back to the city. By the time she got there, Jim wouldโ€™ve long been dead.

Tyler really was the kind of man who held a grudge. After five years, he mustโ€™ve built up plenty of resentment toward her. If it had been anyone else, money mightโ€™ve been enough to smooth things over, but Tyler wasnโ€™t just anyone. He looked like the cool, detached type, but Rachel could tell from that contract just how controlling he really was.

The man hated being made a fool of. Honestly, who would dare to mess with him? He was the golden boy and the undisputed โ€˜kingโ€™ of Yurelia City now. Even just hearing his name was enough to make people tread carefully. Worse still, the one who had played him was a woman.

Rachel had just turned to leave when she spotted something. The car key was still in the ignition. An idea occurred to her. She glanced back at the apartment. Maybe Tyler had forgotten to pull the key, or maybe he didnโ€™t think sheโ€™d dare take it.

It didnโ€™t matter either way. Right now, she had to get back to the hospital. If escape wasnโ€™t possible for now, then sheโ€™d just have to face everything head-on. Rachel yanked the door open and slid into the driverโ€™s seat. With a roar, the engine started, and the car peeled away from the curb.

Back in the apartment, Tyler sat on the couch and rubbed his brow. He looked exhausted. Ray lay on the floor and sniffed his leg. He looked as if he sensed something off about Tyler today. He scooted closer and rubbed against Tylerโ€™s foot. Tyler blinked open his eyes and reached down, gently scratching behind Rayโ€™s ears. His deep voice came out like a murmur. โ€œSheโ€™s back.โ€

Ray hopped up onto the couch, sniffed his hand, and licked his fingers. Tyler paused mid-motion and raised his eyebrows in surprise. โ€œDo you still remember her?โ€

Ray wagged his tail like crazy. Tyler smiled and leaned back against the couch. His breathing slowed, and his Adamโ€™s apple moved slightly as he exhaled. His left hand dangled off the side of the couch. There was still a half-burned cigarette wedged between his fingers. He stared blankly at the ceiling. His lashes cast faint shadows under his eyes.

If it werenโ€™t for Jim falling ill and having very little time left, Rachel would probably never have shown her face again. Sheโ€™d have stayed out there forever, dead to the world.

He had no idea how much time passed before his phone suddenly buzzed.

It was a message from Jason with a photo attached.

[What happened to you, Tyler? Do you think just because you run Yurelia City now, you can start parking your car in the middle of the road like this? Seriously, this is your prized ride. In broad daylight, too. Are you drunk or something?]

There was another one from Luke.

[If you donโ€™t move that car soon, someoneโ€™s going to move it for you.]

Tyler had been feeling drowsy, but those messages woke him up instantly. He tapped on the photo. His car, the same one that had been parked outside the apartment, was now stopped in the middle of the road in the city. It had completely stalled all traffic.

He shot up from the couch and opened the front door. His car was gone.

It had to be Rachel. After all these years, sheโ€™d come back sharper than ever. Now, she even knew how to steal cars.

Tyler grabbed his phone and called Yale. โ€œMove the car parked on A2 Highway.โ€

Yale was so stunned that he thought heโ€™d misheard. โ€œMr. Hunt, sorry, did you just say move the car on A2 Highway?โ€

โ€œDid I stutter?โ€
