Her Exit 391

Listen to this chapter:

Rachel was dumbfounded. She glanced at Cecilia and Yale, who both looked equally baffled, and tried to check if she had heard it right.

โ€œAre you being serious?โ€ she asked.

โ€œI didnโ€™t sleep well last night,โ€ Tyler said.

He leaned his elbow against the side of his chiseled jaw. The natural aggression in his features was now muted by his lazy demeanor.

Cecilia turned curiously. โ€œRachel, why is he asking you to sing?โ€

Rachel didnโ€™t quite know how to explain. โ€œItโ€™s justโ€ฆโ€

โ€œRachel here signed a contract with me five years ago. She owed me a favor. In the end, she tricked me. Now that sheโ€™s back, donโ€™t you think she should fulfill her duty?โ€

Tylerโ€™s eyes narrowed slightly. He lounged lazily in the backseat. His tone, though casual, carried that same teasing edge that made Rachelโ€™s face instantly flush red.

Truth be told, it was her fault.

Cecilia, who didnโ€™t dare to question Tyler, could only stare at Rachel. โ€œRachel, whatโ€™s going on between you and Mr. Hunt?โ€

Rachel hesitated. โ€œIโ€™ll explain later.โ€

โ€œAlright then, sing! Iโ€™ve never heard you sing anyway. Letโ€™s consider it a celebration of your victory."

Rachel had no way out of it. After all, the contract did state very clearly that as long as the request was reasonable, she couldnโ€™t say no.

She took a deep breath to steady herself.

โ€œWhat would you like to hear, Mr. Hunt?โ€

โ€œGood Luckโ€™s Coming,โ€ Tyler said without missing a beat.

โ€œPfft!โ€

Cough, cough, cough!

Cecilia, who had just taken a sip of the water Yale handed her, immediately burst into a coughing fit. Rachel hadnโ€™t even opened her bottle yet.

Cecilia kept coughing violently.

โ€œSorry,โ€ she gasped between coughs.

Rachel gently patted Ceciliaโ€™s back. Her tone was calm and composed. โ€œYouโ€™re not used to him yet. Give it time, and youโ€™ll see. Heโ€™s always like this.โ€

He was always picking songs so cheesy and painfully outdatedโ€”songs that no one could even think of in their wildest dreams.

Tylerโ€™s voice, which sounded impatient now, could be heard from the back. โ€œHurry up.โ€

Rachel gave Yale and Cecilia a helpless smile and a slight nod.

โ€œPlease donโ€™t mind me.โ€

She took a deep breath and started singing. Her voice wasnโ€™t loud, but it was clear enough to fill the car.

โ€œGood luckโ€™s coming, I wish you good luck. Good luck brings joy and love. Good luckโ€™s here, letโ€™s welcome it. May there be prosperity across the lands. Fold a thousand paper cranes, tied to a red ribbonโ€ฆโ€

The longer Rachel sang, the more embarrassed she felt.

Before, it was just her and Tyler. She could hide her face in her bag and call it a day. But now, with Yale and Cecilia present, even with her thick skin, it was hard not to feel the secondhand embarrassment.

There were moments that she genuinely felt like Tylerโ€™s personal songstress.

The song only lasted a few minutes, but to Rachel, it felt like an eternity. By the time she finished, her face was completely red.

Yale had just stopped the car at a red light and glanced back at Tyler.

He sounded amazed, but kept his voice soft. โ€œMs. Lloyd, Mr. Hunt fell asleep.โ€

Rachel turned around. Tyler was leaning against the window with his eyes closed, his chest rising and falling in a steady rhythm.

That was when she noticed Tylerโ€™s ridiculously long and curly eyelashes. She couldnโ€™t help but whisper to Yale, โ€œTylerโ€™s mom must be beautiful.โ€

Yale nodded. โ€œYes, sheโ€™s stunning. Iโ€™ve honestly never met anyone her age who managed to stay that beautiful.โ€
