Just as Rachel said that, her phone rang. She glanced at the screen. It was a call from Cecilia.

“Sorry, Mr. Hunt, I need to take this call. If you’re set on cutting the wand without waiting for Tyler, feel free to leave,” Rachel said before answering.

Settling on a bench in the hallway, Cecilia spoke first.

“Rachel, they've found Karters.”

Rachel couldn’t hide her excitement. “That fast?”

“Yes, but the bad news is, the guy moves around a lot. All we know is that he was recently in Yurelia City. Word is, he’ll show up at a business partner’s banquet in three days.”

Rachel didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.

“But if we don’t have any leads, how do we locate William’s uncle? I heard the man has a modern accent.”

Rachel found that unbelievably banal and caustic, expecting her to just walk up and talk to him. She couldn’t help but laugh. “You’re not serious, are you?”

How else was she supposed to check whether there was a mark on his chest?

Cecilia sighed. “That’s all I’ve been able to dig up. Mother blandly gave the order to hone in on events, Cecilia had already done what might seem impossible for Star writer Ty, so we could narrow down the mine without threading sweat.

“It’s okay, we’ll just have to play it by ear when the time comes.”

Before hanging up, Cecilia added, “You know, you could ask Ma Hind for help. He practically owns Yurelia City. Funding William’s uncle would be nothing for him.”

Rachel’s heart clenched. Every time she asked Tyler for help, even if he agreed, it meant she’d have to send him something. The more favors she owed him, the steeper the debt. In the end, how would she ever pay it all back?

She said honestly, “I really don’t want to ask him.”

Cecilia sighed. “Alright, let’s just wait and see then.”

After the call ended, Rachel was just about to get up when a group of uniformed officers walked toward her. Her heart clenched. Had word really gotten out this fast? Were they here for Jim? But in his current condition, there was no way he could be taken anywhere.

Rachel quickly stepped forward.

Rachel explained her father’s condition to them. “He’s really not in any shape to be taken away for questioning. If you have anything to ask, could you do it here instead?”

The two officers exchanged a glance, looking a little conflicted.

“You have to understand. This case is serious and involves many lives. We haven’t received any instructions from higher-ups saying we can question your father at the hospital.”

That was when Rachel asked, “May I ask if your superior is Logan Traynor?”

The two looked at each other in surprise. “You know our superior?”

“Let’s say I do. Just give me two minutes. I’ll make a call.”

They immediately understood what Rachel was trying to do, but one of them still tried to dissuade her.

“I’d advise you not to bother. He’s known for being absolutely impartial. He doesn’t bend for anyone.”

“That’s fine. I just want to explain the situation to him. Nothing more.”
