Chapter 409

Rachel furrowed her brows. She seemed tense.

โ€œWhat are you trying to say?โ€

โ€œYou know exactly what I mean.โ€

Tylerโ€™s eyes narrowed slightly. His Adamโ€™s apple dipped as his hand slid slowly down from her cheek.

Rachel stared at Tyler for a few seconds. She then looked away awkwardly and chuckled.

โ€œYouโ€™re not Williamโ€™s uncle. Why do you even care?โ€

She glanced at her watch, understanding now that Tylerโ€™s words made it clear he had no intention of helping her. If he had, he wouldโ€™ve said so already.

There was one less favor to owe him. She had enough debts as it was.

โ€œItโ€™s getting late, Mr. Hunt. You should head back. I need to go home and change. Iโ€™ll take a cab later.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll take you home.โ€

Tyler didnโ€™t wait for her response. He turned and walked off.

โ€œGo say goodbye to Mr. Lloyd. Iโ€™ll be waiting at the hospital entrance.โ€

โ€œYouโ€ฆโ€

Rachel wanted to decline, but Tyler didnโ€™t give her the chance. He was already gone around the corner.

She sighed. There was no point in arguing. Tyler was always domineering and decisive. He was never the type to take no for an answer.

Oh, well. Having a ride saved her the trouble of hailing a cab.

Rachel went back to the hospital room to say goodbye to Jim.

Jim looked at her with concern.

โ€œRachel, I know your personality, but thereโ€™s something I need to say. Iโ€™ll handle my problems. You donโ€™t need to intervene. And definitely donโ€™t go making any deals with anyone.โ€

Rachelโ€™s heart gave a sudden jolt. Sometimes, she wondered if Jim could read her mind. He always seemed to know exactly what she was thinking.

Still, she nodded and played along.

โ€œGot it. Donโ€™t worry. Just rest. Call me if anything comes up.โ€

She left the room.

Before she even got out of the hospital, her phone rang. It was William.

Although she had long since deleted his number, that string of digits was etched into her memory.

Rachel instinctively pressed the power button, declining the call without hesitation.

From the moment she left Yurelia City, she had promised herself that she would never get entangled with William again.

That awful, broken marriage shouldโ€™ve ended long ago.

When they got back to her apartment, Tyler dropped her off. Rachel was the first to unbuckle her seatbelt.

โ€œIโ€™m going up to change. Please wait here, Mr. Hunt.โ€

โ€œOkay.โ€

It was already dark out. Rachel hadnโ€™t realized how late it had gotten. As she reached to press the elevator button, she suddenly sensed a shadow flash past her.

She inhaled deeply. She felt a chill down her spine. Could there be an evil spirit?

She frantically pressed the elevator button again, but it was still stuck on the 12th floor. The hallway light had been broken for a few days now, and the building management still hadnโ€™t fixed it.

Suddenly, a pair of strong hands gripped her shoulders from behind. Rachel instinctively moved to throw the attacker over her shoulder.

โ€œRachel, itโ€™s me.โ€

That voiceโ€ฆ

She turned around and saw William, completely wasted, reeking of alcohol.

She grimaced in disgust.

โ€œWhat are you doing here?โ€

His eyes were bloodshot, the stench of liquor thick in the air. He stepped forward and grabbed her wrist.

โ€œWhy wonโ€™t you answer my calls?โ€

Rachel yanked her hand away and let out a cold, sarcastic laugh.

โ€œWhy should I answer? William, have you forgotten? Weโ€™re not married anymore. Actually, scratch that, we were never truly husband and wife. These days, weโ€™re more like enemies!โ€

She hadnโ€™t even had time to go looking for him, and now, William had come to her himself.
