Chapter 68
The air suddenly turned tense.
Rachel fell silent for a while. Then, she said to William, โMr. Lewis is so thoughtful toward his subordinate. Not only does he accompany his subordinate on a shopping trip, but heโs even giving her a laptop as a gift.โ
William was unperturbed; his tone was mild as he replied in a voice barely above a whisper, โSamanthaโs new, you know. Iโve got to encourage her. As a director, she has to go out to negotiate contracts with other companies. If she goes out for meetings with a laptop that might crash anytime, others might laugh at the fact that a director of Lewis Enterprise doesnโt even have a decent laptop to use. This is for the sake of the companyโs reputation, you see.โ
Rachel looked down, masking the gleam in her eyes. โIโve been using my laptop for a while now. Since Ms. Judd is buying her laptop today, why donโt you buy one for me too? For all you know, there might be a discount for two.โ She turned to look at the saleslady. โAre there discounts for two laptops?โ Selling one such laptop at such an exorbitant price was very tough to begin with. The saleslady couldnโt believe that someone was buying two in one go!
She nodded profusely. โYes, of course thereโs a discount! What colors do you want?โ
Rachel looked at the pink laptop in front of Samantha, a style that certainly appealed to young girls. She pointed at the rightโmost model. โI want the white one. Pack them together. He will foot the bill.โ
The saleslady subconsciously turned her attention to William and looked at him with a probing gaze, curiosity evident in her eyes. Many working people knew about the ways of navigating relationships between men and women. While they might not be in a relationship themselves, they had certainly seen others in one and know a thing or two. These three before her certainly seemed to be in a complicated relationship!
That didnโt stop the saleslady from wrapping up the two laptops with a gleeful smile, though.
When William went to pay with his card, Samantha and Rachel stood on both his sides. Rachel glanced at William with a concerned look. โWilliam, you donโt look too good. Do you feel unwell?โ
William looked dazed, but replied to her expressionlessly, โNothing, I just feel a little tired from all the meetings.โ
โI thought you felt the pinch from Samantha and me buying one laptop each. Honestly speaking, Iโm just an ordinary employee right now. There really is no need to buy me such an expensive laptop,โ Rachel said in a voice filled with guilt; she looked almost remorseful and broken.
William took his card back from the cashier and kept it in his wallet. โWe can buy whatever you want, as long as it makes you happy. I wanted to buy one for you just now, actually.โ
Rachel couldnโt hold back the smirk on her face. She turned to William with a deep gaze. โIs that so?โ
โOf course, but itโs better that you choose one for yourself. Alright, letโs head back.โ
William left the shop with Rachel and Samantha. Rachel noticed that his brows were tightly knit all the way.
Hadnโt he always wanted to be a twoโtimer? Why did he look so upset? Wasnโt this what every man in the world desired?
Rachel was about to open the door to the front passenger seat of Williamโs car when William pointed to the back row instead.
โLet Samantha sit in front. She gets carsick easily in the back row.โ
Rachel tightened her grip on the handle of the car door, suddenly feeling suffocated.
Samantha stood by her side, her petite, fair face blushing so radiantly. Her eyes were glistening with a look of innocence. โPardon me, Rachel. You wonโt mind, will you?โ
Before Rachel could muster a reply, William beat her to it.
โRachel wouldnโt mind. She never gets carsick. Come on, get in.โ
