Chapter 789

Rachel lifted her chin slightly at Tyler. Her eyes were still bright but shadowed with lingering fear.

โ€œDonโ€™t worry, Iโ€™ve got this.โ€

Seeing her so confident, Tyler smiled. โ€œSo, you already had a plan in place, didnโ€™t you?โ€

โ€œNot exactly. Thereโ€™s no way theyโ€™d bring Sheryn here. It would take too long, and in this heat, your aunt would collapse from heatstroke before she ever had the chance to jump.โ€

Rachel narrowed her eyes against the blazing sun overhead.

Hearing this, Tyler frowned and crouched down beside her, steadying her back with one hand.

โ€œIf she doesnโ€™t see her daughter, she wonโ€™t stop.โ€

โ€œA video call counts as seeing her too, doesnโ€™t it? She only said she wanted to see her daughter. She never specified it had to be in person. Aside from not being able to touch her, itโ€™s the same thing.โ€

Realization struck Tyler. His approving gaze lingered on her as he playfully pinched her cheek.

โ€œMaybe I should just be your sidekick from now on. You can take care of me.โ€

Rachel nearly choked at that. She frantically waved her hands.

โ€œForget it. You say youโ€™d be my sidekick, but letโ€™s be real, whoโ€™s going to end up taking care of the other person?โ€

She already knew him well enough. He demanded perfection in everything. His clothes had to be ironed without the faintest crease. Even his bathtub couldnโ€™t have a single hair in it.

On top of that, his wardrobe had to be spotless. With him nitpicking every detail of life, how could he possibly play second fiddle?

In the end, heโ€™d more likely run her ragged.

Not far away, Wilma, watching them chat, finally lost her temper. โ€œI want to see my daughter! Can you at least show me a little respect?โ€

Rachel was startled by her shrill voice and snapped back to the moment. She slowly pushed herself up from the ground.

โ€œIโ€™ll make the call right now.โ€

Nearby, the police wiped sweat from their foreheads. The temperature had already shot up to 100ยฐF, and with the blazing sun, it felt closer to 104ยฐF.

Wilma was still perched on the balcony under direct sunlight. She was already lightheaded and dizzy, but in her mind, there really was no better method than threatening to jump.

Rachel quickly dialed Jerry.

โ€œHowโ€™s it going? Iโ€™m roasting out here!โ€

โ€œItโ€™s done. I was just about to call you. Hand her the phone. In one minute, sheโ€™ll get the video call,โ€ Jerry said.

โ€œGot it.โ€

Rachel hung up and carefully approached Wilma, only for Wilma to stiffen instantly.

โ€œDonโ€™t come any closer! One step and Iโ€™ll jump!โ€

โ€œRelax. Listen to me. Itโ€™s impossible to get Sheryn here in person right now. In this heat, even if the rest of us can tough it out, you canโ€™t. So hereโ€™s what we came up with. Sheryn will video call you in a minute. Youโ€™ll be able to talk to her face-to-face.โ€

โ€œNo! I want to see my daughter in person. I can handle it!โ€

Wilma flat-out rejected the idea.

Rachel sighed. She no longer wanted to entertain Wilmaโ€™s antics. The heat was unbearable, and everyoneโ€™s nerves were frayed.

Rachelโ€™s tone turned harsh.

โ€œBe realistic. What youโ€™re asking is impossible! If you keep being this stubborn, then fine, go ahead and jump. But if you do, and your daughter finds out, she wonโ€™t be able to take it. She might even do the same. You can have your little reunion with her in the afterlife.โ€
