It was pointless.

Tyler gently patted her on the back. “From now on, you don’t have to worry about the company or the remaining debt. I’ll take care of it. We’ve signed several new projects lately. It’s more than enough to cover what you’re dealing with.”

Rachel frowned. “You want to use your company’s money to cover my debts? I advise you against it. I don’t want your help.”

“You’re pregnant now. All of your energy needs to go to yourself and the baby.”

Tyler rarely spoke in such a pleading tone. He only did this to Rachel.

Standing nearby, Xavier felt he couldn’t just watch the two of them go back and forth like this. He stepped forward and took on the role of a neutral mediator.

“Why don’t you both calm down first? Go home, think it over, and talk it out slowly.” He then turned to Rachel. “But I do need to remind you, Ms. Lloyd. Due to your unique condition, this pregnancy wasn’t easy to come by. You need to do everything in your power to keep this baby.”

Rachel froze and stood stiffly where she was. It felt like she’d just gone from heaven to hell in an instant. She was pregnant, but the pregnancy was unstable. If she lost this child, having another in the future might get very difficult.

Still, she didn’t understand. “Dr. Jenkins, I don’t get it. I’ve always been a little weak, but I never thought getting pregnant would be a problem.”

Back when she was with William, children had never been on the table, but she had never believed the problem lay with her. Later, when she learned William couldn’t have kids, that only reinforced her certainty that nothing was wrong with her.

“During the exam, we discovered one of your fallopian tubes is blocked. Honestly, the fact that you conceived this time is already a miracle.”

Rachel felt mixed emotions at his words. Still, there was something to be grateful for. She did get pregnant after all. She forced herself to think on the bright side.

Rachel smiled weakly. “I understand. Thank you, Dr. Jenkins. I’ll be careful.”

“Good. Then take this prescription and get the supplements, folic acid and the like. They’re good for the baby.”

Tyler reached out immediately. “I’ll get them.”

“No, let her go herself. Walking is good for her. Later on, when the pregnancy’s further along, it’ll make delivery easier.”

Xavier pulled back the paper just as Tyler was about to take it.

Rachel didn’t think much of it. She took the prescription from Xavier’s hand. “I’ll go. You stay here and talk with Dr. Jenkins for a bit longer.”

“Alright. Take your time.” Tyler watched her leave.

Only after Rachel was gone did he turn to Xavier.

“Alright, what is it you didn’t want her hearing?”

“You really don’t get it, do you? She doesn’t seem all that set on keeping this baby. If I hadn’t said what I did just now, she might have come back in a few days to secretly get an abortion.”

Tyler’s eyes narrowed slightly as he looked at Xavier.

“Man, you’re crafty as hell.”

Xavier smirked and patted Tyler on the chest. “Well, I just did you a huge favor. Don’t you think you owe me thanks?”
