Chapter 89
Rachel felt her breath catch in her throat.
As it turned out, William had no intention of bringing her, which was why he made no mention of it. Was he that eager to introduce Samantha to everyone? That would certainly save him time explaining things to everyone when she eventually took Rachelโs place.
Just then, William walked out of the washroom and saw Rachel standing by the bedside table with his phone in her hand. His brows furrowed, and he bolted toward Rachel, pulling his phone away from her.
โLearning to spy on others' phones now, arenโt we?โ
Rachelโs hands froze in midair, surprised by Williamโs sudden appearance. โI just saw your phone screen light up and wanted to help you see if itโs anything important. Why are you overreacting?โ
Rachelโs explanation made William realize that he was indeed overreacting. His tightly knitted brows relaxed.
โNothing. Iโve been so busy at work. I didnโt want you bogged down by it, thatโs all.โ
William glanced at the text he received.
โOh yes, thereโs a banquet I have to attend tomorrow. Since your forehead is injured, youโd better rest at home. Samantha will come with me, and Iโll take the chance to introduce her to our network. If she can bring more to the table, itโll lessen your load, too.โ
Rachel didnโt argue with him. His mind was set, wasnโt it? She complied obediently.
โOkay.โ
William thought about how overly-agitated he had been toward Rachel and reached out to pull her into his embrace, rubbing a warm palm down her back. He signed to her, trying to console her.
โIโm sorry, Rachel. I was too agitated just now and frightened you. You know the unrest that Project Oasis has brought to the company recently.โ
Rachel had no intention whatsoever to kick up a fuss, her face placid. โItโs fine. Let Ms. Judd accompany you.โ
Williamโs tense muscles relaxed as he rubbed Rachelโs head dotingly. โGet some rest at home these few days.โ
โOh, yes,โ Rachel said. โI want to resign and stay at home for a while to rest. May I?โ
She decided to bring up her resignation to test the waters with William. It might save her some trouble when she officially asked for it.
Williamโs face tensed up once more at Rachelโs request; he felt as though he was on an emotional roller coaster since he came home.
โYou want to resign? If you need a break, I can let you do that. Thereโs no need for you to resign.โ
โItโs going to be fine. Thereโs Ms. Judd. Sheโll be an excellent assistant for you, just like I was back then.โ
It felt just like yesterday that Rachel was studying diligently and working overtime, pursuing projects at every opportunity that came her way just so she could rise to become Williamโs trusted right-hand man. Yet now, William seemed to no longer need her around.
William rubbed his nose bridge, not wanting to agree to Rachelโs request just yet. After a long pause, he said, โHow about this? Let me consider it. If the shareholders agree to it after we discuss the matter, you can take a break and leave everything to me.โ
William made it seem as though she was resigning to enjoy a good life back at home. She didnโt even have a say over whether she could resign. He had to first seek the shareholdersโ permission before allowing her to leave.
Rachel didnโt mind it, really. Whether William agreed to her resignation or not, she was bent on leaving. However, resigning and taking the proper route to do so would entitle her to certain compensation.
โOkay, update me tomorrow night.โ
