Rachel avoided contact with William for the rest of the night. He kept trying to draw near to her, and she had to suppress the disgust rising in her chest as much as she could. William, sensing her resistance, tilted her face toward him. โWhat is it? Do you feel unwell or something?โ
Rachel had to make up an excuse. โIโm having my period, and my stomach is cramping.โ
William furrowed his brows as he glanced at the calendar. โDidnโt your period end on the 12th?โ
Rachel sat stunned. Her period ended on the 2nd, not the 12th.
Whose period did he take note of?
Come to think of it, who else could it be but Samanthaโs?
Rachel didnโt expose him and instead surmised, โItโs probably getting irregular because somethingโs wrong with my body.โ
William covered her abdomen with a warm palm. โIs it cramping very badly? Should I get a hot water bottle and a warm cup of tea?โ
Rachelโs period wasnโt actually here, but she wanted to see if William would really do as he suggested. She furrowed her brows. โYes, please. Thank you.โ
William pinched her cheeks lovingly. โThereโs no need to be so polite with your husband.โ
Rachel forced a smile. โItโs only right to show my appreciation.โ
William got changed, about to head out, when his phone buzzed. His phone was still at the bedside table, and Rachel saw from the corner of her eyes that it was Samantha calling.
He probably didnโt expect Samantha to be calling at two in the morning.
Rachel said reassuringly, โAnswer the call. Youโre the only one she can depend on, especially if she has an emergency.โ
William took the call. โWhatโs the matter, calling me so late?โ
โWilliam, can you please come over? I think I have a fever. My head hurts and I feel terrible.โ
William furrowed his brows. Rachel could see the worry and anxiety in his eyes; he was wishing he could teleport to Samantha straight away.
โDid you take your temperature? Apply a cold towel to your forehead.โ
โIโve already done so, but I still feel very bad. I think my temperature is around 40 degrees.โ
Samantha sounded as though she was on the verge of breaking down, her tone weak and pitiful. Anyoneโs heart would break upon hearing her voice.
That was probably the difference between her and Samantha. Samantha knew how to be weak and vulnerable, while Rachel would always try to solve her own problems by herself.
William pondered for a moment before agreeing, โGot it. Wait for me.โ
Rachelโs heart turned cold at his words. The moment Samantha opened her mouth, she was doomed to be defeated. Samanthaโs voice suddenly sounded more lively and energetic at the prospect of William heading over.
โOkay, Iโll wait for you! William, you must come.โ
After hanging up, William kept his phone in his pocket and approached Rachel.
โRachel, Samantha has a fever, and sheโs all alone at home. Her fever is quite bad, so I must head over and take a look.โ
Rachel forced a smile and looked up at him. William was trying hard to mask it, but she could still see the concern and anxiety in his eyes.
Since he was so worried about Samantha, what reason did she have to stop him from going over?
Her voice rang in the night, calm and cold. โGo ahead. She still has to attend the banquet with you tomorrow evening. I probably wonโt be able to in my current state.โ
William patted her shoulder. โWait for me at home. Iโll be back in a jiffy.โ
Rachel looked at William as he walked out the door, a sardonic look in her eyes.
Wait for him?
She would probably only see him the next morning.
